The strength of jointed rock.mass is strongly controlled by the degree of interlock.between its constituent rock.*** degree of interlock.constrains the k.nematic freedom of individual rock.block. to rotate and slide along the block.forming *** Hoek.Brown(HB)failure criterion and the geological strength index(GSI)were developed based on experiences from mine slopes and tunneling projects in moderately to poorly interlock.d jointed rock.*** has since then been demonstrated that the approach to estimate the HB strength parameters based on the GSI strength scaling equations(called the‘GSI strength equations’)tends to underestimate the confined peak.strength of highly interlock.d jointed rock.masses(***>65),where the rock.mass is often non-persistently jointed,and the intact rock.block. are strong and *** estimation of the confined strength of such rock.masses is relevant when designing mine pillars and abutments at great depths,where the confining pressure is high enough to prevent block.rotation and free sliding on block.*** this article,a grain-based distinct element modeling approach is used to simulate jointed rock.masses of various degrees of interlock.and to investigate the influences of block.shape,joint persistence and joint surface condition on the confined peak.*** focus is on non-persistently jointed and block.(persistently jointed)rock.masses,consisting of hard and homogeneous rock.block. devoid of any strength degrading defects such as *** results from this investigation confirm that the GSI strength equations underestimate the confined strength of highly interlock.d and non-persistently jointed rock.***,the GSI strength equations are found to be valid to estimate the confined strength of persistently jointed rock.masses with smooth and non-dilatant joint surfaces.

AIM: To examine eplerenone(Inspra, Pfizer), a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, as a treatment option for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR).METHODS: A retrospective consecutive case series was conducted for patients receiving oral eplerenone for chronic CSCR. At baseline and each follow-up visit,spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)imaging was performed, including manual measurements of the height and diameter size of subretinal fluid. The primary outcome measure was the reduction in subretinal fluid following initiation of ***: A total of 17 eyes of 13 patients treated with25 and 50 mg of oral eplerenone per day were *** fluid(SRF) decreased over time following eplerenone therapy(P = 0.007 and P =0.002, diameter and height respectively). Maximum SRF height decreased from a mean of 131.5 μm at baseline to 15.3 μm at day181+. SRF diameter decreased from an average of 2174.4μm at baseline to 46.9 μm at day 181 +. Log MAR visual acuity improved from 0.42(Snellen equivalent: 20/53) at baseline to 0.29(Snellen equivalent: 20/39) at day 181 +(P = 0.024). Central subfield thick.ess(CST) decreased from 339.5 μm at baseline to 270.3 μm at day 181+(P = 0.029).CONCLUSION: Eplerenone therapy resulted in significant anatomic and visual improvements in eyes with chronic CSCR.

Although it is well k.own that plants emit acoustic pulses under drought stress,the exact origin of the waveform of these ultrasound pulses has remained ***,we present evidence for a correlation between the characteristics of the waveform of these pulses and the dimensions of xylem conduits in *** a model that relates the resonant vibrations of a vessel to its dimension and viscoelasticity,we extract the xylem radi from the waveforms of ultrasound pulses and show that these are correlated and in good agreement with optical *** demonstrate the versatility of the method by applying it to shoots of ten different vascular plant *** particular,for Hydrangea quercifolia,we further extract vessel element lengths with our model and compare them with scanning electron *** ultrasonic,noninvasive characterization of internal conduit dimensions enables a break.hrough in speed and accuracy in plant phenotyping and stress detection.

Ultrafast diffraction with free attosecond electron pulses promises insight into the four-dimensional motion of charge density inatoms,molecules and condensed matter. Here we consider the quantum dynamics of the electron-electron scattering process on anattosecond time scale. By numerically solving the time-dependent two-electron Schrdinger equation,we investigate the interactionof an incoming k.V-range electron wavepack.t by the bound electron of an aligned H+2 molecule,using a one-dimensional *** findings reveal the ratio of elastic to inelastic contributions,the role of exchange interaction,and the influence of the molecularelectron density to diffraction. Momentum transfer during the scattering process,from the incoming to the bound electron mediatedby the nuclei,leaves the bound electron in a state of coherent oscillation with attosecond recurrences. Entanglement causes relatedstate-selective oscillations in the phase shift of the scattered electron. Two scenarios of distinguishable and indistinguishable freeand bound electrons yield equivalent results,irrespective of the electronic spins. This suggests to employ the scenario of distinguishable electrons,which is computationally less demanding. Our findings support the possibility of using electron diffraction forimaging the motion of charge density,but also suggest the application of free electron pulses for inducing attosecond dynamics.
