Toward more reliable stability measurements in stance: recommendations for number of measurements, foot position and feedback——a cross-sectional study among servicemen

Background:In the military,insufficient postural stability is a risk factor for developing lower extremity *** stability training programs are effective in preventing these ***,an objective method for the measurement of postural stability in servicemen is *** primary objective of this study was to assess the influence of the number of repetitions,different foot positions and real-time visual feedback on postural stability,as well as their effects on the intrasession reliability of postural stability measurements in *** secondary objective was to assess the concurrent validity of the ***:Twenty healthy servicemen between 20 and 50 years of age and in active duty were eligible for this quantitative,cross-sectional *** measurements took place on a force plate,measuring the mean velocity of the center of *** participants were asked to stand as still as possible in three different foot positions(wide stance,small stance,and on one leg),five times each for 45 s each time,and the measurements were performed with and without real-time visual ***:We observed a significant main effect of foot position(P<0.001),but not of visual feedback(P=0.119)or repetition number(P=0.915).Postural stability decreased in the more challenging foot *** ICC estimates varied from 0.809(one repetition in wide stance)to 0.985(five repetitions on one leg).The common variance(R2)between different foot positions without feedback varied between 0.008(wide stance)and ***:To yield reliable data,wide-stance measurements should be conducted three times,and small-stance measurements and measurements on one leg should be conducted two *** scores of a measurement in a particular foot position cannot predict the scores of measurements in other foot positions.

Identifying prognostic factors for conservative treatment outcomes in servicemen with chronic exertional compartment syndrome treated at a rehabilitation center

Background: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome(CECS) is a condition of pain induced by exercise, and it is characterized by muscle swelling and impaired muscle function in the lower leg. Given the diversity in the diagnosis and treatment of CECS, it is desirable to determine variables pertaining to prognosis and recovery. The purpose of this study is to identify prognostic factors for conservative treatment outcomes in servicemen with CECS who were treated at a Military Rehabilitation ***: Patients from all military services were referred from the special unit for lower leg pain at the Central Military Hospital, Utrecht, the Netherlands. Descriptive analysis was used to report the characteristics of the participants and their baseline measurements. Group differences were analyzed using a Student's t-test or MannWhitney U test, according to the normality of the data distribution. Differences between the pre-and postintervention outcomes were evaluated using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. To evaluate the magnitude of prognostic factors, a univariate logistic regression analysis was performed. The prognostic factors included age, body mass index, body fat percentage, self-efficacy beliefs, foot malalignment, intramuscular pressure, other comorbidities, protein and creatine use, smoking, alcohol use, complaint duration, physical demands, and duration of military ***: After the rehabilitation period, we observed 25 patients with a successful outcome, which was defined as a reduction in pain(≥2 points) during the capacity test measured using a verbal rating scale and 20 patients with an unsuccessful outcome. Factors demonstrating a limited increased odds ratio for an unsuccessful outcome included smoking, alcohol use, intramuscular pressure, a complaint duration of more than 6 months, and physical demands of service. Quantifying source-sink relationships in leaf-color modified rice genotypes during grain filling

Leaf-color modification can affect canopy photosynthesis,with potential effects on rice yield and yield *** source-sink relationships through crop management is often used to improve crop *** study investigated whether and how modifying leaf color alters source-sink relationships and whether current crop cultivation practices remain applicable for leaf-color modified *** collected data of total biomass and nitrogen(N)accumulation in rice genotypes of four genetic backgrounds and their leaf-color modified variants(greener or yellower)were analyzed,using a recently established modelling method to quantify the source-sink(im)balance during grain *** all leaf-color variants,only one yellower-leaf variant showed a higher source capacity than its normal *** was associated with greater post-flowering N-uptake that prolonged the functional leaf-N duration,and this greater post-flowering N-uptake was possible because of reduced pre-flowering N-uptake.A density experiment showed that current management practices(insufficient planting density accompanied by abundant N application)are unsuitable for the yellower-leaf genotype,ultimately limiting its yield ***-color modification affects source-sink relationships by regulating the N trade-off between pre-and post-flowering uptake,as well as N translocation between source and sink *** best exploit leaf-color modification for improving crop productivity,adjustments of crop management practices are required.

Mycorrhizal fungi mitigate nitrogen losses of an experimental grassland by facilitating plant uptake and soil microbial immobilization

Nitrogen(N)is one of the most limited nutrients of terrestrial ecosystems,whose losses are prevented in tightly coupled cycles in finely tuned *** change-induced N enrichment through atmospheric deposition and application of vast amounts of fertilizer are now challenging the terrestrial N *** mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)are known drivers of plant-soil nutrient fluxes,but a comprehensive assessment of AMF involvement in N cycling under global change is still ***,we simulated N enrichment by fertilization(low/high)in experimental grassland microcosms under greenhouse conditions in the presence or absence of AMF and continuously monitored different N pathways over nine *** found that high N enrichment by fertilization decreased the relative abundance of legumes and the plant species dominating the plant community changed from grasses to forbs in the presence of AMF,based on aboveground *** presence of AMF always maintained plant N:phosphorus(P)ratios between 14 and 16,no matter how the soil N availability *** in plant N:P ratios due to the increased plant N and P uptake might thus be a primary pathway of AMF altering plant community ***,we constructed a comprehensive picture of AMF’s role in N cycling,highlighting that AMF reduced N losses primarily by mitigating N leaching,while N_(2)O emissions played a marginal *** mycorrhizal fungi reduced N_(2)O emissions directly through the promotion of N_(2)O-consuming *** underlying mechanism for reducing N leaching is mainly the AMF-mediated improved nutrient uptake and AMF-associated microbial *** results indicate that synergies between AMF and other soil microorganisms cannot be ignored in N cycling and that the integral role of AMF in N cycling terrestrial ecosystems can buffer the upcoming global changes.

Background:This study examines the relationship between coping strategies and symptoms of anxiety or depression among Dutch servicemembers deployed to ***:Coping strategies were assessed in 33 battlefield casualties(BCs)and the control group(CTRLs)of 33 uninjured servicemembers from the same combat units using the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire.A factor analysis was performed,and two clusters of coping strategies were derived,namely,adaptive and maladaptive *** of anxiety and depression were evaluated using the depression and anxiety subscales of the Symptom *** between coping and symptoms of anxiety and between coping and symptoms of depression were calculated,and a logistic regression was ***:A moderate correlation was observed between maladaptive coping and symptoms of anxiety in the BC group(r=0.42)and among the CTRLs(r=0.56).A moderate correlation was observed between maladaptive coping and symptoms of depression in both groups(r=0.55).The statistical analysis for the total sample(BCs and CTRLs)demonstrated no association between coping and symptoms of anxiety or ***:A correlation but no association was observed between maladaptive coping and mental health disorders in deployed Dutch *** research should focus on constructing cluster profiles of coping strategies and associating them with mental health outcomes and reintegration into society.
