Dispersal behavior of yellowjacket （Vespula germanica） queens

Understanding the factors that affect animal dispersal behavior is important from both *** and applied perspectives. Dispersal can have clear evolutionary and ecological consequences, but for normative insect pests, dispersal capacity can also help to explain invasion success. Vespula germanica is a social wasp that, in the last century, has successfully invaded several regions of the world, showing one of the highest spread rates reported for a nonnative insect. In contrast with nonsocial wasps, in social species, queens are responsible for population redistribution and spread, as workers are sterile. For V. germanica, it has been observed that queen flight is limited to 2 distinct periods： early autumn, when new queens leave the nest to mate and find sheltered places in which to hibernate, and spring when new colonies are founded. Our aim was to study the flight behavior of V. germanica queens by focusing on the different periods in which dispersal occurs, characterizing as well the potential contribution of queen flight （i.e., distance） to the observed geographical spread. Our results suggest that the distances flown by nonover- wintered queens is greater than that flown by overwintered individuals, suggesting that the main queen dispersal events would occur before queens enter hibernation. This could relate to a behavioral trait of the queens to avoid the inbreeding with related drones. Additionally, given the short distances flown and remarkable geographical spread observed, we provide evidence showing that queen dispersal by flight is likely to contribute proportionately less to population spread than human-aided factors.

We investigated the effect of annealing time on the structure and optical properties of Sr WO4：Eu^3＋ powders prepared by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel method and heat treated at 800 ℃ for 2,4,8 and 16 *** and differential thermal analyses revealed that Sr WO4：Eu^3＋ powders were obtained at about 800 ℃.X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld refinement data confirmed that all powders had a scheelite-type tetragonal ***-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated structural order at short range and anti-symmetric stretching vibrations of O-W-O bonds associated with tetrahedral[WO4]*** properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible（UV-vis）diffuse reflectance,and photoluminescence（PL）data which provided the evolution of quantum efficiency（η）and lifetime（τ）.UV-vis spectroscopy evidenced intermediate energy levels within the band gap of Sr WO4：Eu^3＋ *** properties validated that the Eu^3＋ electric-dipole（^5D0→^7F2）transition in PL emission spectra was dominant which proved that Eu^3＋ ions were positioned in a site without an inversion center.[（^5D0→^7F2）/（^5D0→^7F1）]band ratios showed that Eu^3＋ ions were located in a low symmetry *** PL emission,ηandτproved the dependence on the annealing time in the behavior of Sr WO4：Eu3＋powders with a higher relative emission PL intensity as well as higherηandτvalues related to other samples when heat treated at 800℃ for 8 h.

correlative cD4 and cD8 T-cell immunodominance in humans and mice:Implications for preclinical testing

Antigen-specific T-cell recognition is restricted by Major Histocompatibility complex(MHc)molecules,and differences between cD4 and cD8 immunogenicity in humans and animal species used in preclinical vaccine testing are yet to be fully *** this study,we addressed this matter by analyzing experimentally identified epitopes based on published data curated in the Immune Epitopes DataBase(IEDB)*** first analyzed SARS-coV-2 spike(S)and nucleoprotein(N),which are two common targets of the immune response and well studied in both human and mouse *** observed a weak but statistically significant correlation between human and H-2^(b)mouse T-cell responses(cD8 S specific(r=0.206,p=1.37×10^(−13));cD4 S specific(r=0.118,p=2.63×10^(−5))and N specific(r=0.179,p=2.55×10^(−4))).Due to intrinsic differences in MHc molecules across species,we also investigated the association between the immunodominance of common Human Leukocyte Antigen(HLA)alleles for which HLA transgenic mice are available,namely,A*02:01,B*07:02,DRB1*01:01,and DRB1*04:01,and found higher significant correlations for both cD8 and cD4(maximum r=0.702,p=1.36×10^(−31)and r=0.594,p=3.04−122,respectively).Our results further indicated that some regions are commonly immunogenic between humans and mice(either H-2^(b)or HLA transgenic)but that others are human ***,we noted a significant correlation between cD8 and cD4 S-(r=0.258,p=7.33×10^(21))and N-specific(r=0.369,p=2.43×10^(14))responses,suggesting that discrete protein subregions can be simultaneously recognized by T *** findings were confirmed in other viral systems,providing general guidance for the use of murine models to test T-cell immunogenicity of viral antigens destined for human use.

considering the annual waste in the food sector that occurs throughout the value chain, it is important to establish strategic measures to reduce, value and reintroduce them into the industrial sector. Additionally, the constant search for the development of sustainable strategies to promote safe and healthy products for consumers has gained great prominence. Biowastes from fruits and vegetables present in their composition an excellent source of compounds of interest, which can be reused in different technological routes, providing added value in the industrial, socioeconomic and therapeutic sectors. In particular, the phenolic compounds present in fruit and vegetable biowastes, have bioactive and preservative characteristics that are excellent candidates for the development of natural ingredients that can be substitutes for synthetic preservatives. As the list of identified phenolic compounds is extensive and accessible, the interest in these compounds is gaining more and more prominence, since the use of ingredients of synthetic origin is being delayed by actions harmful to the health of the consumer. Phenolic compounds, in addition to having preservative capacity, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity, are also known for their anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, antiallergic and other biological properties, which increases the interest in their use in functional and nutraceutical preparations. Based on this, this review gathers information on the impacts that the exacerbated generation of fruit and vegetable waste can generate in the environmental, economic and social sectors, as well as lists different ways of reusing these wastes, highlighting the characteristics of phenolic compounds.

Aspects of forest restoration and hydrology:the hydrological function of litter

Although forests play important roles in the hydrological cycle,there is little information that relates the water retention capacity of litter in areas under passive restoration,especially in cerrado *** study relates litter levels to water holding capacity and effective water retention among forest fragments under different passive restoration stages:46,11,and 8 years to better understand litter hydrological functions in the *** retention capacity and effective water retention capacity of litters(unstructured materials,branches and leaves)in the field were monitored on a monthly *** litter accumulation at 46 years was significantly higher than that of the other succession *** litter mass was significantly higher than that of leaves and *** 46-year stage had the highest water holding capacity in the leaf fraction,followed by unstructured material and *** the water holding capacity was lower in the oldest resto-ration,this site showed the highest efficiency under field *** process was quickly reestablished,as the 11-year restoration showed results closer to that for the 46-year stage in comparison to the area at 8 ***,passive restoration plays a key role in soil water mainte-nance due to the influence of litter in cerrado *** and the imminent need of restoring degraded sites,highlight the need for further studies focused on bet-ter understanding of the process of forest restoration and its temporal effect on soil water recovery dynamics.

Objective:To analyze trends of dengue incidences and deaths in Malaysia from 2000 to 2010 as well as the predominant dengue virus serotypes during the last ***:We used the national data on annual reported cases,deaths,incidence rate,mortality rate,and case fatality rate of dengue fever(DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever(DHF) as well as dengue virus serotypes prevalent in Malaysia during the last ***/ regression lines were fitted to investigate the trend of dengue incidences and deaths due to the disease for a 11-year period(2000-2010).For the distribution of national incidence rate,mortality rate,and case fatality rate of DF and DHF, descriptive statistics using mean and 95%confidence intervals(c/) for means,and range were ***:The number of dengue cases and number of deaths have increased,on average, by 14%and 8%per year *** average annual incidence rate of DF per 100 000 populations was higher as compared to that of ***,the yearly mean mortality rate of DHF per 100 000 populations was greater than that of *** simultaneous circulation of all four dengue serotypes has been found in *** a particular dengue virus serotype predominates for at least two years before it becomes replaced by another ***: The dengue situation in Malaysia has worsened with an increasing number of reported oases and deaths during the last *** increasing trend of dengue highlights the need for a more systematic surveillance and reporting of the disease.

Health Promotion and Life course Dynamics: Transitions of Brazilian Elderly

Background: Understanding life transitions is important to help people to achieve their developmental needs. No studies have examined the patterns of responses to life transitions, eliciting the experiences of growing old of retired Brazilian older adults. Aim: To identify and describe the patterns of responses to life transitions of retired Brazilian older adults. Design: Using a theoretical perspective of transition as a guide, a qualitative, secondary narrative research design was incorporated to obtain data from 11 interviews. Method: Initial data collection took place during a broader study on the influence of people’s working life history. Eleven autonomous and independent persons, 64 - 82 years old, were interviewed at a geriatric outpatient unit in Rio de Janeiro to obtain their perceptions of old age. The secondary, narrative holistic-content analysis focused on the patterns of responses to life transitions. Results: The first turning point was a childhood event and the next was their first job. The third turning point was moving to another place/house or another city, the fourth starting a family, and retirement was the last turning point. conclusions: While older people may feel environmentally disconnected throughout life, their patterns of response, together with the available resources and prevention/interventions influence the transition process. Health Promotion actions are needed at vulnerable points during the transition process, thereby facilitating the health outcomes.

Strength, Power and Resistance Training in Older Women

Purpose: It has been established that physical exercise generally improves the physical performance of older people. This finding has led to an increase in studies into the most efficient forms of exercise. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of three types of exercise: aerobic, strength and muscle power, in improving the functional capacity of older people. Methods: A study was undertaken of 123 physically independent older women who did no physical exercise. The women were placed randomly into four groups: a control Group (cG, n = 33) who did no exercise;an Aerobic Group (AG, n = 30) who did mild intensity muscle resistance exercises, combined with medium intensity gait training;a Strength Group (SG, n = 30) which performed high resistance localized exercises;and a Power Group (PG, n = 30) which did high-speed localized medium resistance exercises. The tests applied were aerobic endurance: six minute walking test (6MWT);maximum strength: one repetition maximum test (1RM);power: Tendo Weightlifting Analyzer (TWA);and agility: standing and walking. AG, SG and PG underwent 24 exercise sessions. Results: All the groups except for cG demonstrated significant improvement in all the tests applied. There were non-statistically significant differences between the gains made by the AG, SG and PG groups in the 6MWT, power and agility tests. SG was significantly superior to the other groups in the 1RM test. conclusions: Aerobic, strength and muscle training improved the functional capacity of older people. SG was notably superior to the other groups in the 1RM test.

Tunable Super-Structured Fiber Bragg Gratings with Perfect Sequences Based on m-Sequence

Recently, a tunable fiber Bragg grating(FBG) was developed by using stress-responsive colloidal crystals. In this paper, we have simulated the application of these nanoparticles into the super-structured fiber Bragg grating(SSFBG) written with perfect sequences derived from a short maximal-length sequence. A tunable SSFBG will be available to overcome the prohibitive temperature variation of the optical codecs. Nevertheless,we presented a method to implement coherent time spreading optical code-division multiple-access(OcDMA) where a unique code(or perfect sequence) can be reused and mixed with different wavelengths to obtain a tunable wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM)system. In order to maximize the binary throughput, we have selected a unique short maximal-length sequence composed of 7 chips that can be tuned with 7 different optical wavelengths. We found thousands of different tunable combinations that presented power contrast ratios(P/c) higher than 12 dB. When a WDM-OcDMA system used 2 different combinations simultaneously, the perfect binary detection with error correction codes was achieved successfully. The tunable SSFBG with colloidal crystals will be a simple and good alternative choice for fiber-to-the-home(FTTH) communications.

The key risk factor for glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucoma drainage devices implanted in theeye can reduce IOP and thus stop disease progression. However, most devices currently used in clinical practice arepassive and do not allow for postsurgical IOP control, which may result in serious complications such as hypotony (i.e.,excessively low IOP). To enable noninvasive IOP control, we demonstrate a novel, miniature glaucoma implant that willenable the repeated adjustment of the hydrodynamic resistance after implantation. This is achieved by integrating amagnetic microvalve containing a micropencil-shaped plug that is moved using an external magnet, thereby openingor closing fluidic channels. The microplug is made from biocompatible poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene)(SIBS) containing iron microparticles. The complete implant consists of an SIBS drainage tube and a housing elementcontaining the microvalve and fabricated with hot embossing using femtosecond laser-machined glass molds. Usingin vitro and ex vivo microfluidic experiments, we demonstrate that when the microvalve is closed, it can providesufficient hydrodynamic resistance to overcome hypotony. Valve function is repeatable and stable over time. Due to itssmall size, our implant is a promising, safe, easy-to-implant, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery device.
