Embryonic and post-embryonic responses to high-elevation hypoxia in a low-elevation lizard

Low-elevation species can migrate toward higher elevations to survive in a warming ***,animals’responses to hypoxia when migrating to high elevations have rarely been *** identify the response of lowelevation lizards to high-elevation hypoxia,we collected field body temperatures(Tfb)and operative temperatures(Te)of lizards(Eremias argus)from a low-elevation population(1036 m)and a high-elevation population(2036 m),and then determined adult thermal physiology,embryonic development,and hatchling phenotypes after acclimating low-elevation lizards and incubating their eggs in conditions mimicking the low-elevation oxygen condition(18.5%O2)and high-elevation oxygen(hypoxic)condition(16.5%O2).Our study revealed that Tfb and Te were higher for the low-elevation population compared to the high-elevation *** also found adults from low elevation acclimated to hypoxia preferred lower body temperatures,but did not show changes in locomotor performance or *** addition,hypoxia did not affect embryonic development(hatching time and success)or hatchling phenotypes(body size and locomotor performance).These results suggest that adult lizards from low elevations can respond to hypoxia-induced stress when migrating to high elevations by behaviorally thermoregulating to lower body temperatures in order to sustain normal ***,low-elevation embryos can develop normally(with unchanged hatching success and offspring phenotypes)under the high-elevation hypoxic *** study highlights that low-elevation populations of a species that inhabits a range of elevations can buffer the impact of high-elevation hypoxic conditions to some degree and thus attain similar fitness to the source population.

MALDI coupled with laser-postionization and trapped ion mobility spectrometry contribute to the enhanced detection of lipids in cancer cell spheroids

Cancer cell spheroids(CCS) are a valuable three-dimensional cell model in cancer studies because they could replicate numerous characteristics of solid tumors. Increasing researches have used matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging(MALDI-MSI) to investigate the spatial distribution of endogenous compounds(e.g., lipids) in CCS. However, only limited lipid species can be detected owing to a low ion yield by using MALDI. Besides, it is still challenging to fully characterize the structural diversity of lipids due to the existence of isomeric/isobaric species. Here, we carried out the initial application of MALDI coupled with laser-postionization(MALDI-2) and trapped ion mobility spectrometry(TIMS) imaging in HCT116 colon CCS to address these challenges. We demonstrated that MALDI-2 is capable of detecting more number and classes of lipids in HCT116 colon CCS with higher signal intensities than MALDI. TIMS could successfully separate numerous isobaric/isomeric species of lipids in CCS. Interestingly, we found that some isomeric/isobaric species have totally different spatial distributions in colon CCS. Further MS/MS imaging analysis was employed to determine the compositions of fatty acid chains for isomeric species by examining disparities in signal intensities and spatial distributions of product ions. This work stresses the robust ability of TIMS and MALDI-2 imaging in analyzing endogenous lipids in CCS, which could potentially become powerful tools for future cancer studies.

Consequential fate of bisphenol-attached PVC microplastics in water and simulated intestinal fluids

The ever-increasing prevalence of microplastics and different bisphenols made the presence of bisphenol-attached microplastics a critical *** this study,experiments were performed to examine desorption behaviors and cytotoxicity performance of contaminated microplastics in aquatic surroundings and intestinal environment after ingestion by organisms(cold-/warm-blooded).The kinetic study shows that the rate of desorption for bisphenols can be enhanced threefold under simulated warm intestinal *** Freundlich isotherms indicate multiple-layer desorption of the bisphenols on the heterogeneous surfaces of polyvinyl chloride(PVC)*** was detected in the adsorption/desorption of bisphenols in a water environment,but no adsorption/desorption hysteresis was observed in the simulated intestinal conditions of warm-blooded *** to enhanced bioaccessibility,the desorption results imply that the environmental risk of contaminated PVC microplastics may be significantly increased after ingestion at a high bisphenols *** with different IC_(50),the five bisphenols released under the intestinal conditions of warm-blooded organisms can cause higher proliferation reduction in fish and human cell lines than the bisphenols released in *** study helps elucidate the consequential fate and potential cytotoxicity of contaminated microplastics and the possible implications of the microplastics as a critical vector for bisphenols to increase the potential health risks.

Biomass production and nutrient （N, P, K, Ca and Mg） accumulation, distribution and cycling were quantified in young, mature and over-mature （10-, 22-, and 34-year old） Chinese fir [Cunninghamia lanceolate （Lamb.） Hook] plantations in southern China. Total stand biomass of young, mature and over-mature stands was 38, 104 and 138 t ha-1 respectively. Biomass production increased significantly with age. Stem wood represented the highest percentage of stand biomass, accounting for 41, 55 and 63 % in the young, mature and over-mature plan- tations respectively. Nutrients concentration was highest in live needles and branches, and lowest in stem wood. The plantations accumulated more N, followed by K, Ca, Mg, and P. Nutrient return amount, nutrient utilization effi- ciency, nutrient turnover time, the ratio of nutrient return and uptake increased with stand age, which implies that young Chinese fir deplete soil nutrients to maintain growth, and efficiently utilize nutrients to decrease dependence on soil nutrients as they age. Harvesting young Chinese fir plantations would therefore lead to high nutrient loss, but prolonging the rotation length could improve soil recovery, and help sustain productivity in the long-term. Improved nutrient return through litterfall as stands get older may also be beneficial to nutrient pool recovery.

Litterfall production and nutrient return in different-aged Chinese fir(Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations in South China

The amounts of litter produced and nutrients returned play a fundamental role in the productivity and biogeochemical and nutrient cycling of forest *** monitored annual litterfall production, nutrient return,and monthly dynamics over a one-year period in Chinese fir plantations aged 10, 22, and 34 years. Our objective was to quantify litterfall and nutrient return over a complete harvest rotation of Chinese fir. Annual litterfall production increased with stand age and was recorded as（3,294.6 ± 360.4）,（3,733.9 ± 211.2）, and（4,876.1 ± 212.8） kg ha-1a-1in stands aged 10, 22 and 34 years, respectively. Total litter production was significantly greater in the stand aged34 years than in the stand aged 10 years（p ／ 0.05）. With the exception of miscellaneous components, needle litterfall constituted the highest proportion（27.5–43.6 %）, followed by branches/twigs（9.5–16.6 %）. In all three plantations,annual total nutrient return to soil was in the order of C（1,119.95–2,709.05 kg ha-1a-1） [ N（39.32–62.04 kg ha-1a-1） [ K（15.95–22.44 kg ha-1a-1） [ P（1.30–1.63 kg ha-1a-1）. C, N, K and P input to soil was significantly lower in the 10-year-old stand in comparison to the 22- and34-year-old stands（p ／ 0.05）. Litterfall production and nutrient return（C, N and K） followed similar patterns, and C and N input to soil was significantly related to litterfall production（needle, branch and total litterfall）. C, N, P and K input to soil and total litterfall production were mainly driven by needle litterfall.

The alpine wetlands in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau have degraded in recent ***,the response of the soil food web to the degradation is still *** habitats including a wet meadow(WM),a grassland meadow(GM),a moderately degraded meadow(MDM)and a severely degraded meadow(SDM)(sandy meadows)were selected along the degrees of *** soil macrofaunal biomass and the environmental factors of vegetation and soil were *** soil macrofaunal community biomass increased significantly from WMto MDM and decreasedto a very small amount in SDM,with most taxa *** biomass of the trophic groups of detritivores,herbivores and predators exhibited similar responses to soil macrofaunal *** relative biomass of detritivores increased from WM to MDM,but herbivores responded in an opposite manner,resulting in the dominant trophic group and trophic structure varying progressively from WM to GM to *** properties but not vegetation determined the changes in trophic groups and trophic *** results implied that the higher trophic levels(carnivores or omnivores)responded more sensitively than the lower trophic levels(herbivores)to alpine wetland *** results also suggested that soil macrofauna have a habitat-specific characteristic trophic structure and can be used as indicators of soil health conditions.

Acoustic radiation torque on a spheroidal droplet in standing Bessel beams

In the actual acoustic manipulation,a droplet often takes the shape of a spheroid due to the combined effects of the acoustic radiation force,surface tension and gravitational force,which can be rotated by the torque in helicoidal sound *** on the sound scattering theory,the scattering coefficients of a spheroidal droplet in standing Bessel beams are solved using the partial-wave series expansion method,and the analytical expression of the acoustic radiation torque is also *** this basis,the results for both the incompressible and the compressible spheroidal droplets are calculated *** simulated results show that the acoustic radiation torque on the incompressible droplet is more closely related to the half-cone angle of the beam,while the torque on the compressible droplet is more dependent on specific *** growth of the beam order will increase the peaks of the acoustic radiation torque,but it is difficult to obtain an obvious radiation torque for compressible droplets at low and medium *** results of this study are expected to provide a theoretical guide for manipulating droplets using helicoidal acoustic beams.

The conversion of the biomass into eco-friendly fuels and chemicals has been exten-sively recognized as the essential pathway to achieve the sustainable economy and carbon neutral ***,as a kind of promising biomass energy,has been certiﬁed to produce the high-valued chemicals and *** efforts have been made to develop various catalysts for lignin catalytic *** metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)and covalent organic frameworks(COFs)belong to very important heterogeneous porous catalysts due to their regular porous struc-tures,high speciﬁc surface area,and precisely tailored *** the review,theﬁrst part focused on the catalytic conversion of lignin,lignin model compounds,and lignin derivatives using the pristine MOFs,functional MOF composites,and MOF-derived *** second part summarized the catalytic conversion of lignin model compounds using pristine COFs and functional COF *** review here mainly concentrated on the design of the materials,screening of catalytic conditions,and explorations of the corresponded ***ﬁcally,(1)we summarized the MOF-and COF-based materials for the effects on the catalytic trans-formation of lignin-related substances;(2)we emphasized the catalytic mechanism of C–C and C–O bonds cleavage together with the structure–activity relationships;(3)we in-depth realized the relationship between the chemical/electronic/structural properties of the MOF-and COF-based catalysts and their catalytic performance for lignin-related ***,the challenges and future perspectives were also discussed on the catalytic conversion of lignin-related substances by MOF-and COF-based catalysts.
