BACKGROUND Bariatric surgery is one of most effective long-term treatments for morbid ***,post-bariatric surgery anemia is identified as a common adverse effect and remains a challenge *** To estimate the risk of post-bariatric surgery anemia and to stratify the association between age,gender,and types of *** This study is a population-based cohort *** conducted this nationwide study using claims data from National Health Insurance Research Database in *** were 4373 morbidly obese patients in this study *** Among patients who were diagnosed with morbid obesity,2864 received bariatric *** obesity-associated comorbidities decreased in the surgical *** risk of post-bariatric surgery anemia among obese patients was found by Cox proportional hazards regression[adjusted hazard ratio(HR):2.36].Also,we found significantly increasing cumulative incidence rate of anemia among patients receiving bariatric surgery by log-rank *** adjusting for age and gender,the increasing incidence of post-bariatric surgery anemia was found among women(adjusted HR:2.48),patients in the 20–29-year-old group(adjusted HR:3.83),and patients in the 30-64-year-old group(adjusted HR:2.37).Moreover,malabsorptive and restrictive procedures had significantly higher adjusted HRs,3.18 and 1.55,*** Bariatric surgery give rise to anemia risk among obese patients,specifically in women,young-and middle-aged patients,and patients undergoing malabsorptive procedures in our population-based cohort study in Taiwan.

It was shown by flow cytometry analysis that crystalized preparation of Cordyceps sinensis (Cs-Cr) caused significant elevation of the number of T helper cells and Lyt-1 /Lyt-2 (T helper to T suppressor cell) ratio both in peripheral blood and the treated mice spleen. The spleen weight, phagocyte counts and phagocytic activity were also elevated in the treated group. In addition, Cs-Cr could protect T helper cells from the immnnosuppressive effects of prednisolone acetate and cyclophosphamide. These results further substantiate the fact that Cs-Cr is an immunoregulator/biological response modifier of cellular immunity and may be potentially useful in handling immunodeficient or immunosuppressed patients.

BACKGROUND Eosinophil counts are a promising guide to systemic steroid administration for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).AIM To study the role of peripheral eosinophilia in hospitalized patients with acute exacerbation of COPD(AECOPD).METHODS From January 2014 to May 2017,patients with AECOPD hospitalized in Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital were retrospectively stratified into two groups according to their peripheral eosinophil count:The EOS group(eosinophil count≥2%)and the non-EOS group(eosinophil count<2%).Demographics,comorbidities,laboratory data,steroid use,length of hospital stay,and COPD-related readmissions were compared between the *** A total of 625 patients were recruited,with 176 patients(28.2%)in the EOS *** EOS group showed a lower prevalence of infection,lower cumulative doses of prednisolone equivalents,shorter length of hospital stay,and higher number of COPD-related readmissions than the non-EOS *** were significantly linear correlations between eosinophil percentage and number of readmissions and between eosinophil percentage and length of hospital stay P<0.001,and a lower percent-predicted value of forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV1)were associated with shorter time to first COPD-related readmission[adjusted hazard ratio(***)=1.488,P<0.001;***=0.985,P<0.001,respectively].CONCLUSION The study findings suggest that the EOS group had the features of a shorter length of hospital stay,and lower doses of systemic steroids,but more frequent *** EOS group and lower percent-predicted FEV1 values were risk factors for shorter time to first COPD-related readmission.

Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment on postoperative pain in patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease, and explored the relationship between the postoperative analgesic effect of acupuncture and the sensation of acupuncture experienced by the ***: This retrospective study analyzed the medical records of 97 patients who had undergone an operation by the same surgeon due to degenerative lumbar disease. These patients were divided into acupuncture group(n = 32), patient-controlled analgesia(PCA) group(n = 27), and oral analgesia group(n = 38) according to the different postoperative analgesic methods. During their hospitalization, patients completed daily evaluations of their pain using a visual analogue scale(VAS), and injection times of supplemental meperidine were recorded. Also, the Chinese version of the Massachusetts General Hospital Acupuncture Sensation Scale(C-MASS) was used in the acupuncture ***: Each of the three treatment groups showed significant reductions in postoperative pain, as shown by reduced VAS scores. The acupuncture group, however, had less rebound pain(P < 0.05) than the other two groups. Both the acupuncture and PCA groups experienced acute analgesic effects that were superior to those in the oral analgesia group. In addition, the higher the C-MASS index on the second day after surgery, the lower the VAS score on the fourth day after surgery. There was also a significant difference in the“dull pain” in the acupuncture ***: The results demonstrated that acupuncture was beneficial for postoperative pain and discomfort after simple surgery for degenerative spinal disease. It is worth noting that there was a disproportionate relevance between the patient’s acupuncture sensation and the improvement of pain VAS score.

Background It is well known that dehydration can impair bodily functions. To evaluate the impact of hydration status under ambient environmental temperature on the immune system, 25 male collegiate wrestlers were recruited to undergo an experimental dehydration *** Thirteen subjects had controlled diets with individual energy requirements to prevent body mass loss and restricted water intake to cause 4.52% dehydration; they formed the dehydrated group （DE）. These subjects developed a urine specific gravity of about 1.030 in 84 hours. Twelve other subjects had no water restriction and maintained their total body weight comprised the euhydrated group （EU）. Peripheral blood monocytes （PBMNC） were isolated after dehydration to perform immune response testing by being incubated with a polysaccharide fraction from fu-ling, Poria cocos （polysaccharide fraction from Poria cocos, PCPS, 1-30 μg/L）, to prepare a conditioned medium termed conditioned medium of PBMNC stimulated by PCPS （PCPS-MNC-CM）. More PCPS （25 μg/L） was needed in the DE group to prepare the PCPS-MNC-CM, which was assayed with a growth inhibitory curve for treated U973 *** The treated U937 cells, incubated together with PCPS-MNC-CM from the DE group, exhibited a much lower nitroblue tetrazolium （NBT） positive value of （63.7±4.7）%. The concentration of interferon-gamma （IFN-Y）, interleukin （IL）-1β and tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-α in PCPS-MNC-CM from subjects after dehydration was much lower than in the CM from the EU *** The immune response to PCPS in the DE group was lower than in normally hydrated subjects.

Carbon fixation is the main route of inorganic carbon in the form of CO2 into the *** nature,RuBisCO is the most abundant protein that photosynthetic organisms use to fix CO2 from the atmosphere through the Calvin-Benson-Bassham(CBB)***,the CBB cycle is limited by its low catalytic rate and low energy *** this work,we attempt to integrate the reductive tricarboxylic acid and CBB cycles in silico to further improve carbon fixation *** heterologous enzymes,mostly carboxylating enzymes,are inserted into the Esherichia coli core metabolic network to assimilate CO2 into biomass using hydrogen as energy ***,such a strain shows enhanced growth yield with simultaneous running of dual carbon fixation *** key results include the following.(i)We identified two main growth states:carbon-limited and hydrogenlimited;(ii)we identified a hierarchy of carbon fixation usage when hydrogen supply is limited;and(iii)we identified the alternative sub-optimal growth mode while performing genetic *** results and modeling approach can guide bioengineering projects toward optimal production using such a strain as a microbial cell factory.

Abstract The mechanism underlying the antibacterial activity of probiotic strains inhibiting the growth of other microorganisms appears to be multifactorial and includes lowering of the pH,the production of organic acids and secretion of antibacterial *** modified agar overlay method in our study was used for the determination of the presence of antibacterial activity among the 12 strains of probiotics against common microbial pathogens in different regions of epithelial cells including Streptococcus pneumoniae,Escherichia coli HB101,Candida albicans and Gardnerella *** showed that Lactobacillus salivarius AP-32,*** CT-53,*** LPL28,*** ET-22,*** F-1,Bifidobacterium breve bv-77,*** RE-88 had high ability to inhibit *** growth with a inhibition zone above 3 *** the 12 strains,LPL28,ET-22,bv-77 and RE-88 possessed the higher inhibition with inhibition zones above 3.7 ***-32,CT-53,LPL28,ET-22,F-1,Enterococcus faecalis YM-73,bv-77 and RE-88 had high ability to inhibit *** HB101 growth and ET-22,bv-77,RE-88 possessed the higher inhibition with inhibition zones above4 ***-32,ET-22,LPL28 and F-1 high inhibited the growth of *** the 12 strains,LPL28 and F-1 possessed the higher inhibition with inhibition zones above 4 ***-32,*** CS-773,CT-53,LPL28,ET-22,F-1,*** CP-9,bv-77 and RE-88 showed high ability to inhibit *** *** the 12 strains,CT-53,CP-9 and bv-77 possessed the higher inhibition with inhibition zones above 3.6 *** the whole,the results indicated that AP-32,ET-22,LPL28 and F-1 had high capacity of inhibiting the growth of 4 different pathogens in vitro and perhaps were more capable to promote the mucosal barrier *** verified antibacterial activity of probiotics maybe could decrease the incidence of pathogen infection and supported the development of functional foods as a key to the improvement of health in the consuming public.

As demands to maintain the global food production continue to mount,multinational seed companies are turning to new DNA marker technologies to accelerate the rate of plant breeding and crop *** key to widespread adoption of molecular breeding is the availability of flexible and cost-effective tools that can perform combinatorial and high-throughput genotyping of single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)to guide the crop development *** this end,we have developed a programmable,droplet-based microfluidic device for genotyping maize genomic DNA.A unique feature of the microfluidic platform is the nano sample processors(NSPs),which allow the device to sequentially load an unrestricted number of unique DNA samples using only two inlets,overcoming the current limitation to the number of sample inputs due to small device *** and programmable droplet generation within the device allows each sample to be genotyped against a panel of markers on ***,we have successfully implemented the Invader assay for SNP genotyping in flowing,50-nL droplets,thus achieving significant reduction in consumption of reagents per reaction as compared with conventional genotyping *** a demonstration,we performed 240 Invader reactions(testing 8 DNA samples against 10 SNP markers)and achieved greater than 93% accuracy in SNP calling of plant DNA samples in a single droplet-based experiment.
