Critically ill cirrhotic patients have high in-hospital mortality and utilize significant health care resources as a consequence of the need for multiorgan *** this fact,their mortality has decreased in recent decades due to improved care of critically ill ***-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF),sepsis and elevated hepatic scores are associated with increased mortality in this population,especially among those not eligible for liver *** score is superior to another in the prognostic assessment of these patients,and both liver-specific and intensive care unit-specific scores have satisfactory predictive *** sequential assessment of the scores,especially the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)and Chronic Liver Failure Consortium(CLIF)-SOFA scores,may be useful as an auxiliary tool in the decision-making process regarding the benefits of maintaining supportive therapies in this population.A CLIF-ACLF>70 at admission or at day 3 was associated with a poor prognosis,as well as SOFA score>19 at baseline or increasing SOFA score>*** studies addressing the prognostic assessment of these patients are necessary.

Nutritional supplements use in high-performance athletes is related with lower nutritional inadequacy from food

Background: The use of nutritional supplements(NS) among athletes is widespread. however, little is known about the relationship between nutritional adequacy and NS usage. The aims of this study were to evaluate the NS usage and to compare the nutritional intake from food and prevalence of micronutrient inadequacy(PMI) between NS users and ***: Portuguese athletes from 13 sports completed an NS usage questionnaire and a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire assessing information over the previous 12 months. The estimated average requirement cut-point method was used to calculate PMI. General linear models were used to compare nutritional intake and NS usage. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression were performed to study, respectively,relationships and associations between PMI and NS ***: From the 244 athletes(66% males, 13–37 years), 64% reported NS usage. After adjustment, NS users showed a higher intake from food(p r at least 1 gender, for energy, and for 7 of the 17 studied nutrients. The highest PMI were seen for vitamins D and E, calcium, folate,and magnesium. After adjustment, NS users, irrespective of gender, reported lower PMI for calcium(Or = 0.28, 95%CI: 0.12–0.65), and female users for magnesium(Or = 0.06, 95%CI: 0.00–0.98).Conclusion: Athletes using NS reported a higher nutritional intake from food, and a lower PMI for several nutrients. Perhaps, those who were taking NS were probably the ones who would least benefit from it.

Modified Joint Distribution of Wave heights and Periods

The modified versions of the linear theoretical model of Longuet-higgins （1983） are derived in this work and also compared with the laboratory experiments carried out in MAr1NTEK. The main feature of modifications is to replace the mean frequency in the formulation with the peak frequency of the wave spectrum. These two alternative forms of joint distributions are checked in three typical random sea states characterized by the initial wave steepness. In order to further explore the properties ＆these models, the associated marginal distributions of wave heights and wave periods are also researched with the observed statistics and some encouraging results are obtained.

Mammalian cell surfaces consist of the plasma membrane supported by an underneath cortical ***,these structures can control not only the shape of cells but also a series of cellular functions ranging from migration and division to exocytosis,endocytosis and ***,the cell surface is capable of exerting and reacting to mechanical *** viscoelastic properties,especially membrane tension and bending modulus,are fundamental parameters involved in these *** viewpoint summarizes our current knowledge on how to measure the viscoelastic properties of cell surfaces employing optical tweezers-based tether assays,paving the way for a better understanding of how cells react to external mechanical forces,with a glance on their remodeling dynamics and possible consequences on downstream cellular processes.

The assessment of detrital zircon age records is a key method in basin analysis,but it is prone to several biases that may compromise accurate sedimentary provenance *** to ultrahigh temperature(hT-UhT)metamorphism(especially if T>850℃)is herein presented as a natural cause of bias in provenance studies based on U-Pb detrital zircon ages,since zircon from rocks submitted to these extreme and often prolonged conditions frequently yield protracted,apparently concordant,geochronological *** age spreading can result from disturbance of the primary U-Pb zircon system,likewise from(re)crystallization processes during multiple and/or prolonged metamorphic *** this contribution,available geochronological data on Archean,Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic hT-UhT metamorphic rocks,acquired by different techniques(SIMS and LA-ICP-MS)and showing distinct compositions,are reassessed to demonstrate hT-UhT metamorphism may result in modes and age distributions of unclear geological *** a consequence,it may induce misinterpretations on UPb detrital zircon provenance analyses,particularly in sedimentary rocks metamorphosed under such extreme temperature *** evaluate the presence of hT-UhT metamorphism-related bias in the detrital zircon record,we suggest a workflow for data acquisition and interpretation,combining a multi-proxy approach with:(i)in situ U-Pb dating coupled with hf analyses to retrieve the isotopic composition of the sources,and(ii)the integration of a petrochronological investigation to typify fingerprints of the hT-UhT metamorphic *** proposed workflow is validated in the investigation of one theoretical and one natural example allowing a better characterization of the sedimentary sources,maximum depositional ages,and the tectonic setting of the *** workflow allows to the appraisal of biases imposed by hT-UhT metamorphism and resulting disturbances in the U-Pb detrital zircon record,particularly for sedimentary

Fault-tree Models of Accident Scenarios of roPax Vessels

ro-ro vessels for cargo and passengers （roPax） are a relatively new concept that has proven to be popular in the Mediterranean region and is becoming more widespread in Northern Europe. Due to its design characteristics and amount of passengers, although less than a regular passenger liner, accidents with roPax vessels have far reaching consequences both for economical and for human life. The objective of this paper is to identify hazards related to casualties of roPax vessels. The terminal casualty events chosen are related to accident and incident statistics for this type of vessel. This paper focuses on the identification of the basic events that can lead to an accident and the performance requirements. The hazard identification is carried out as the first step of a Formal Safety Assessment （FSA） and the modelling of the relation between the relevant events is made using Fault Tree Analysis （FTA）. The conclusions of this study are recommendations to the later steps of FSA rather than for decision making （Step 5 of FSA）. These recommendations will be focused on the possible design shortcomings identified during the analysis by fault trees throughout cut sets. Also the role that human factors have is analysed through a sensitivity analysis where it is shown that their influence is higher for groundings and collisions where an increase of the initial probability leads to the change of almost 90% of the accident occurrence.

Nucleation and Growth Mechanisms for Pd-Pt Bimetallic Nanodendrites and Their Electrocatalytic Properties

In a seed-mediated synthesis, nanocrystal growth is often described by assuming the absence of homogeneous nucleation in the solution. here we provide new insights into the nucleation and growth mechanisms underlying the formation of bimetallic nanodendrites that are characterized by a dense array of Pt branches anchored to a Pd nanocrystal core. These nanostructures can be easily prepared by a one-step, seeded growth method that involves the reduction of K2PtCl4 by L-ascorbic acid in the presence of 9-nm truncated octahedral Pd seeds in an aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM analyses revealed that both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of Pt occurred at the very early stages of the synthesis and the Pt branches grew through oriented attachment of small Pt particles that had been formed via homogeneous nucleation. These new findings contradict the generally accepted mechanism for seeded growth that only involves heterogeneous nucleation and simple growth via atomic addition. We have also investigated the electrocatalytic properties of the Pd-Pt nanodendrites for the oxygen reduction and formic acid oxidation reactions by conducting a comparative study with foam-like Pt nanostructures prepared in the absence of Pd seeds under otherwise identical conditions.
