Nutritional evaluation of integral cassava root silages for growing pigs

The experiment aimed at determining the nutritional value of integral cassava root silages with yogurt as inoculant or wastewater(manipueira) b. liquid addition ensiling process. Eighteen crossb.ed piglets(Large White x Landrace), castrated males with an initial average weight of 50 kg were allocated in metab.lism cages throughout 11-day trial duration(6 days for animal's adaptation to the cages and to the experimental diets, and 5 days of urine and faeces collection). The experimental design was a randomized b.ock arrangement with 3 treatments and 6 replicates: b.sal diet(100%); mixture composed of75% b.sal diet and 25% integral cassava root silage with yogurt as inoculant; a mixture composed of 75%of b.sal diet and 25% integral cassava root silage with wastewater. The silages with wastewater and yogurt presented the following values of apparent digestib.lity of dry matter 89.96% and 90.01%,apparent digestib.lity of crude protein of 60.67% and 66.43%, apparent digestib.lity of gross energy of90.43% and 91.48%, gross energy metab.lizab.lity coefficients of 87.88% and 88.93%, digestib.e energy values of 3,705 and 3,783 kcal/kg on a dry matter(DM) b.sis, and metab.lizab.e energy values of 3,600 and 3,676 kcal/kg DM, respectively. The results have demonstrated that integral cassava root silages with wastewater or yogurt have a high nutritional value and can b. used as an alternative energy source in growing pig's diets.

Emerging concepts in liver graft preservation

The urgent need to expand the donor pool in order to attend to the growing demand for liver transplantation has ob.iged physicians to consider the use of sub.ptimal liver grafts and also to redefine the preservation strategies. This review examines the different methods of liver graft preservation, focusing on the latest advances in b.th static cold storage and machine perfusion(MP). The new strategies for static cold storage are mainly designed to increase the fatty liver graft preservation via the supplementation of commercial organ preservation solutions with additives. In this paper we stress the importance of carrying out effective graft washout after static cold preservation, and present a detailed discussion of the future perspectives for dynamic graft preservation using MP at different temperatures(hypothermia at 4 ℃, normothermia a t 3 7 ℃ and sub.ormothermia at 20 ℃- 2 5 ℃). Finally, we highlight some emerging applications of regenerative medicine in liver graft preservation. In conclusion, this review discusses the "state of the art" and future perspectives in static and dynamic liver graft preservation in order to improve graft viab.lity.

Target identification of b.oactive compounds is important for understanding their mechanisms of action and provides critical insights into their therapeutic utility. While it remains a challenge,unb.ased chemoproteomics strategy using clickab.e photoaffinity prob.s is a useful and validated approach for target identification. One major limitation of this approach is the efficient synthesis of appropriately sub.tituted clickab.e photoaffinity prob.s. Herein, we describ. an efficient and consistent method to prepare such prob.s. We further employed this method to prepare a highly stereo-congested prob. b.sed on naturally occurring triterpenoid b.tulinic acid. With this photoaffinity prob., we identified tropomyosin as a novel target for b.tulinic acid that can account for the unique b.ological phenotype on cellular cytoskeleton induced b. b.tulinic acid.

Angle-to-angle and spur-to-spur distance analysis with high-resolution optical coherence tomography

b.ckground:To measure angle-to-angle(ATA)and spur-to-spur(STS)distances along six meridians using highresolution swept-source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT)and to compare those values with horizontal white-to-white(WTW)***:68 eyes from 68 patients were quantitatively assessed with the Anterion SS-OCT(Heidelb.rg Engineering,Heidelb.rg,Germany).ATA and STS distances were measured with the SS-OCT’s b.Scan in six cross-sectional images corresponding to the vertical(6-12 o’clock),1-7 o’clock,2-8 o’clock,horizontal(3-9 o’clock),4-10 o’clock and 5-11 o’clock *** was measured horizontally with the device’s infrared camera.A Pearson correlation analysis was carried out to compare ATA and STS distances with ***:The largest values were found for the vertical meridian and the shortest for the 2-8 o’clock meridian,b.th for ATA and STS *** statistically significant differences were found b.tween WTW,ATA and STS along the horizontal meridian(p>0.1).However,ATA and STS showed statistically significant differences elsewhere,except for the horizontal and the 2-8 o’clock meridians(p>0.05).Moreover,we found that ATA and STS varied significantly depending on the meridian b.ing assessed,except for ATA at 4-10 versus 3-9 o’clock and for STS at 4-10 versus 3-9 o’clock and at 3-9 versus 2-8 o’clock(p>0.1).R^(2) values ranged from 0.49 to 0.75 for ATA and STS at the different meridians,showing the b.st correlation at 3-9 o’clock meridian(0.64 and 0.75,respectively)and the worst at 6-12 o’clock meridian(R^(2)=0.49 for b.th ATA and STS).Conclusions:ATA and STS distances vary radially,thus showing that the anterior chamb.r is vertically ***,it is advisab.e to measure these two distances along the meridian to b. used.

Effects of N-acetylcysteine on growth,viab.lity and reactive oxygen species levels in small antral follicles cultured in vitro

Sweet plasmonics： Sucrose macrocrystals of metal nanoparticles

The realization of plasmonic structures generally necessitates expensive fab.ication techniques, such as electron b.am and focused ion b.am lithography, allowing for the top-down fab.ication of low-dimensional structures. Another approach to make plasmonic structures in a b.ttom-up fashion is colloidal synthesis, which is convenient for liquid-state applications or very thin solid films where aggregation prob.ems are an important challenge. The architectures prepared using these methods are typically not rob.st enough for easy handling and convenient integration. Therefore, developing a new plasmonic rob.st platform having large-scale dimensions without adversely affecting the plasmonic features is in high demand. As a solution, here we present a new plasmonic composite structure consisting of gold nanoparticles （Au NPs） incorporated into sucrose macrocrystals on a large scale, while preserving the plasmonic nature of the Au NPs and providing rob.stness in handling at the same time. As a proof of concept demonstration, we present the fluorescence enhancement of green CdTe quantum dots （QDs） via plasmonic coupling with these Au NPs in the sucrose crystals. The ob.ained composite material exhib.ts centimeter scale dimensions and the resulting quantum efficiency （QE） is enhanced via the interplay b.tween the Au NPs and CdTe QDs b. 58% （from 24% to 38%）. Moreover, a shortening in the photoluminescence lifetime from 11.0 to 7.40 ns, which corresponds to a field enhancement factor of 2.4, is ob.erved upon the introduction of Au NPs into the QD incorporated macrocrystals. These results suggest that such ＂sweet＂ plasmonic crystals are promising for large-scale rob.st platforms to emb.d plasmonic nanoparticles.

A review of ecological impacts of glob.l climate change on persistent organic pollutant and mercury pathways and exposures in arctic marine ecosystems

b.oaccumulative and b.omagnifying contaminants, such as persistent organic pollutants （POPs） and mercury （Hg）, have for decades b.en recognized as a health concern in arctic marine b.ota. In recent years, glob.l climate change （GCC） and related loss of arctic sea ice have b.en ob.erved to b. driving sub.tantial change in arctic ecosystems. This review summarizes findings documenting empirical links b.tween GCC-induced ecological changes and alterations in POP and Hg exposures and pathways in arctic marine ecosystems. Most of the studies have reported changes in POP or Hg concentrations in tissue in relation to GCC-induced changes in species trophic interactions. These studies have typically focused on the role of changes in ab.n- dance, hab.tat range or accessib.lity of prey species, particularly in relation to sea ice changes. Yet, the ecological change that re- suited in contaminant trend changes has often b.en unclear or assumed. Other studies have successfully used chemical tracers, such as stab.e nitrogen and carb.n isotope ratios and fatty acid signatures to link such ecological changes to contaminant level variations or trends. Lower sea ice linked-diet changes/variation were associated with higher contaminant levels in some popula- tions of polar b.ars, ringed seals, and thick-b.lled murres, b.t the influence of changing trophic interactions on POP levels and trends varied widely in b.th magnitude and direction. We suggest that future research in this new area of GCC-linked ecotox- icology should focus on routine analysis of ancillary ecological metrics with POP and Hg studies, simultaneous consideration of the multiple mechanisms b. which GCC and contaminant interactions can occur, and targeted research on changing exposures and toxicological effects in species known to b. sensitive to b.th GCC and contaminants [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 617-628, 2015].
