Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process involving generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places, which can be exchanged or networked to support decision-making in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. BIM is a relatively new technology in an industry typically slow to adopt changes, especially in Portugal. The present paper aims to frame the international implementation of BIM in order to propose a roadmap to spread the use of BIM methodologies in Portugal in the next decade.

A grain-size correction for metal pollution indexes in river sediments

According to the List of Hazardous Substances of the Agency of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR 2017), some metallic elements such as Pb or Cd are still considered as the most polluting elements in the world. These elements accumulate in sediments, and there are various methods available that differentiate lithogenic sources from anthropogenic sources. For that, the natural geochemical background is required, however, its definition is far from unanimous: it can be a global or local value,single or statistically estimated value, depending on the studies. Our study is focused on the Subae River in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, which was historically contaminated by lead metallurgy. The river sediments were sampled at 21 locations: one at the discharge point of the plant’s rainwater basin,ten upstream, and ten downstream. The total contents of Fe, Ti, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, particle-size distribution, and organic matter were analyzed. The conventional geochemical indexes, i.e., the pollution degree(m Cd), pollution load index, and enrichment factor indicated contamination by Zn, Pb, Cr, and ***, a new enrichment factor is introduced, assuming that the sediments come from erosion of soils in the watershed. After obtaining the natural concentrations of metals in the clay, silt, and sand fractions of uncontaminated reference soils, we corrected the pollution indexes by calculating a new individual background in each sediment sample, according to its grain size distribution. This new approach provided more precise indexes in the assessment of sediment pollution, by highlighting higher contamination of Zn and Pb(around 50%) and at the same time the absence of Cr and Cu contamination, two metals not involved with the metallurgical activity.

Taxifolin has a plethora of therapeutic activities and is currently isolated from the stem bark of the tree Larix gmelinni(Dahurian larch). It is a flavonoid of high commercial interest for its use in supplements or in antioxidant-rich functional foods. However, its poor stability and low bioavailability hinder the use of flavonoid in nutritional or pharmaceutical formulations. In this work, taxifolin isolated from the seeds of Mimusops balata, was evaluated by in silico stability prediction studies and in vitro forced degradation studies(acid and alkaline hydrolysis, oxidation, visible/UV radiation, dry/humid heating) monitored by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection(HPLC-UV) and ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry(UPLC-ESI-MS). The in silico stability prediction studies indicated the most susceptible regions in the molecule to nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks, as well as the sites susceptible to oxidation. The in vitro forced degradation tests were in agreement with the in silico stability prediction, indicating that taxifolin is extremely unstable(class 1) under alkaline hydrolysis. In addition, taxifolin thermal degradation was increased by *** the other hand, with respect to photosensitivity, taxifolin can be classified as class 4(stable).Moreover, the alkaline degradation products were characterized by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS as dimers of taxifolin. These results enabled an understanding of the intrinsic lability of taxifolin, contributing to the development of stability-indicating methods, and of appropriate drug release systems, with the aims of preserving its stability and improving its bioavailability.

Dyslipidemia may influence enzymes and transfer proteins needed to the lipoprotein particle remodeling. Calculated indices and evaluation of lipoprotein particle size have widely been used to predict cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate HDL particle size and LDL particle size estimate based on TG/HDL-C as well as apoB/apoA-I ratio as possible marker and atherogenic indices, respectively, of cardiovascular disease risk in the presence of dyslipidemia. We evaluated 100 individuals of both gender, without treatment with lipid-lowering drugs, 27 normolipidemic and 73 dyslipidemic, such as isolated hypercholesterolemia (n = 16), isolated hypertriglyceridemia (n = 17), low HDL-C (n = 26) and mixed dyslipidemia (n = 14). The HDL particle size did not differ between groups. The TG/HDL-C ratio was higher in groups with isolated hypertriglyceridemia (4.2 ± 1.5), low HDL-C (5.2 ± 3.1) and mixed dyslipidemia (5.3 ± 1.6). The apoB/apoA-I ratio was increased in all groups of dyslipidemia (apoB/apoA-I > 0.5) when compared to normolipidemic (apoB/apoA-I = 0.5, p < 0.001). There was a positive linear correlation between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the apoB/apoA-I ratio in low HDL-C group (r = 0.507, p = 0.008, Spearman). The results suggest that the evaluations of lipoproteins particles remodeling markers and the use of calculated indices may contribute to the evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk when dyslipidemia take place.
