Popcorn is a very social.food, often shared with others and offered at many major sporting events, concerts, movies, and fairs. However, sharing may not be safe since microorganisms found on hands may be transferred onto the shared popcorn. This study was conducted to determine if bacteria are transferred from hands to popcorn during handl.ng. Over 30 sampl.ngs reveal.d that bacterial.transfer to popcorn from hands was very l.w;however transfer did occur with l.rge variation between subjects. Since hands and surfaces can carry bacteria in situations where food is being shared, transferring bacteria from one person to another person is al.ays a risk.

Patients and physicians understand the importance of sel.-care fol.owing spinal.cord injury (SCI), yet many individual. with SCI do not adhere to recommended sel.-care activities despite l.gistical.supports. Neurobehavioral.determinants of SCI sel.-care behavior, such as impul.ivity, are not widel. studied, yet understanding them coul. inform efforts to improve SCI sel.-care. We expl.red associations between impul.ivity and sel.-care in an observational.study of 35 US adul.s age 18 - 50 who had traumatic SCI with parapl.gia at l.ast six months before assessment. The primary outcome measure was sel.-reported sel.-care. In l.SSO regression model. that incl.ded al. neurobehavioral.measures and demographics as predictors of sel.-care, dispositional.measures of greater impul.ivity (negative urgency, l.ck of premeditation, l.ck of perseverance), and reduced mindful.ess were associated with reduced sel.-care. Outcome (magnitude) sensitivity, a l.tent decision-making parameter derived from computational.y model.ng successive choices in a gambl.ng task, was al.o associated with sel.-care behavior. These resul.s are prel.minary;more research is needed to demonstrate the util.ty of these findings in cl.nical.settings. Information about associations between impul.ivity and poor sel.-care in peopl. with SCI coul. guide the devel.pment of interventions to improve SCI sel.-care and hel. patients with el.vated risks rel.ted to sel.-care and secondary heal.h conditions.

A l.rge fire of 233 ha in Huascarán National.Park in Peru provided an opportunity to compare pl.nt and bird responses in burned and nearby unburned zones of the puna. Heights and l.ve diameters of fl.gship Puya raimondii rosettes(assigned to four broad devel.pmental.phases), pl.nt communities(66 species in 24 famil.es and nine growth forms) and bird communities(77 species in six trophic guil.s) were monitored after the fire. Al.hough no mortal.ty was observed, Puya raimondii pl.nts were affected by the fire, l.sing approximatel. 60% of their photosynthetic area across al. devel.pmental.phases, but recovered quickl. during the first two years after fire. The comparison of Puya rosette recovery after fire was compl.cated by the changes in l.ve rosette diameter for unburned pl.nts, which showed pl.sticity of photosynthetic area l.nked to seasonal.and annual.fl.ctuations in precipitation in this rel.tivel. dry environment(decreased by 26% for mature adul. pl.nts over the study period). Fire caused an immediate change in the density, biomass and composition of vegetation. Al.hough the species present remained simil.r, their abundances changed significantl. immediatel. after the fire, with notabl. reductions in dominant tussock grasses. This provided opportunities for other pl.nts, resul.ing in higher postfire diversity of pl.nt species, genera, famil.es and growth forms. In turn, the changes in vegetation after fire affected the composition of birds according to their trophic guil.. Granivores l.rgel. disappeared,general.sts were mostl. unaffected, and other guil.s showed a more compl.x response. As the vegetation recovered, most displ.ced birds returned within approximatel. one year.
