Sexual dimorphism is a widespread phenomenon in *** is reflected in differences in life history,behavior and *** of differences in behavior are mostly difficult and time-consuming,especially in high mountain *** enhance our knowledge on sexual dimorphisms of alpine butterflies,we performed a mark-release-recapture study on 2 species common in the Alps:Boloriapales and Boloria *** analysed movement and foraging behavior to investigate differences between *** sexes were mostly sedentary and the movement distances of males and females ***,obvious differences in dispersal behavior between the sexes were found in the movement *** different patterns were *** males showed intensive flight activity,but mostly flew only in a limited part of the entire habitat (i.e.,their individual home range)searching for females,whereas females were less flight active and flew only to find places for oviposition or *** third pattern,where individuals flew larger distances,was only observed in a small number of males,which always returned to their home *** all feeding was observed on ***,males preferred the genera Leontodon and Crepis,while females preferred Leontodon and *** from this sexual difference in foraging,individuals of both sexes were found to be more or less specialised on nectar *** activity was generally greater in males than ***,we think that sex-specific requirements in nectar ingredients exist,that is,sugar for the intensive flight activity of males and amino acids for egg production of females.

Neurovascular interactions are crucial for the normal development of the central nervous system. To study suchinteractions in primary cultures, we developed a procedure to simultaneously isolate neural progenitor and endothelialcell fractions from embryonic mouse brains. Depending on the culture conditions endothelial cells were found to favormaintenance of the neuroprogenitor phenotype through the production of soluble factors, or to promote neuronal differ-entiation of neural progenitors through direct contact. These apparently opposing effects could reflect differential cellularinteractions needed for the proper development of the brain.

Background Overgrazing was assumed to increase the population density of small mammals that are the intermediate hosts of Echinococcus multilocularis, the pathogen of alveolar echinococcosis in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. This research tested the hypothesis that overgrazing might promote Echinococcus multilocularis transmission through increasing populations of small mammal, intermediate hosts in Tibetan pastoral communities. methods Grazing practices, small mammal indices and dog Echinococcus multilocularis infection data were collected to analyze the relation between overgrazing and Echinococcus multilocularis transmission using nonparametric tests and multiple stepwise logistic regression. Results In the investigated area, raising livestock was a key industry. The communal pastures existed and the available forage was deficient for grazing. Open （common） pastures were overgrazed and had higher burrow density of small mammals compared with neighboring fenced （private） pastures; this high overgrazing pressure on the open pastures measured by neighboring fenced area led to higher burrow density of small mammals in open pastures. The median burrow density of small mammals in open pastures was independently associated with nearby canine Echinococcus multilocularis infection （P=-0.003, OR=1.048）. Conclusion Overgrazing may promote the transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis through increasing the population density of small mammals.

Non-destructive microstructural analysis by electrical conductivity:Comparison with hardness measurements in different materials

The use of non-destructive evaluation(NDE) techniques for assessing microstructural changes in processed materials is of particular importance as it can be used to assess, qualitatively, the integrity of any material/structure. Among the several NDE techniques available, electrical conductivity measurements using eddy currents attract great attention owing to its simplicity and reliability. In this work, the electrical conductivity profiles of friction stir processed Ti6Al4 V, Cu, Pb, S355 steel and gas tungsten arc welded AISI 304 stainless steel were determined through eddy currents and four-point probe. In parallel, hardness measurements were also performed. The profiles matched well with the optical macrographs of the materials: while entering in the processed region a variation in both profiles was always observed. One particular advantage of electrical conductivity profiles over hardness was evident: it provides a better resolution of the microstructural alterations in the processed materials. moreover, when thermomechanical processing induces microstructural changes that modify the magnetic properties of a material,eddy currents testing can be used to qualitatively determine the phase fraction in a given region of the material. A qualitative relation between electrical conductivity measurements and hardness is observed.

Corneal collagen crosslinking in patients treated with dextran versus isotonic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPmC) riboflavin solution: a retrospective analysis

Background:Corneal collagen crosslinking(CXL)is a widely used treatment for halting the progression of *** initial studies of CXL were performed with a riboflavin solution containing dextran,recent protocols for CXL have indicated the use of a riboflavin solution containing isotonic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose(HPmC).This study was performed to investigate differences in visual outcomes and Scheimpflug(Pentacam)analysis in patients who have undergone epithelium-off CXL with riboflavin solution containing either 20%dextran versus 1.1%***:All patients in this non-randomized,non-masked,retrospective cohort analysis were treated at Edward *** Eye Institute,Columbia University medical Center,New York,NY,***-seven eyes of 33 patients were crosslinked with a dextran solution and 19 eyes of 19 patients crosslinked with an isotonic HPmC solution,both using an epithelium-off 30-min,3 mW/cm2 *** patients had a diagnosis of keratoconus or postrefractive surgery *** spectacle corrected visual acuity(BSCVA)and Pentacam parameters were compared at all follow up visits(1,6,12,and 24 months).Differences between groups treated with HPmC and dextran were compared using student’s *** between treated eye and fellow eye were calculated and compared between HPmC and dextran groups using paired ***:Patients treated with a dextran solution had significantly greater improvement in BSCVA at 1,6,and 24 months(pmpared to the isotonic HPmC-treated *** increased in both groups at 1 month;however,HPmC-treated patients had a greater increase compared to dextran-treated patients(p=0.01).Kmax decreased in both groups at 6 and 12 months,although this finding was only significant in the HPmC-treated group at 12 ***:Our data suggest that crosslinking with the dextran solution may result in significantly better visual outcomes(demonstrated by visual acuity)compared to the isotonic HPmC ribof

The paper presents analysis of the performance and the internal flow behaviour in the vaned diffuser of a radial flow pump using PIV(particle image velocimetry)and pressure probe *** measurements have already been performed at middle height inside one diffuser channel passage for a given speed of rotation and various mass flow *** results have been already presented in several previous *** experiments have been performed using a three-hole pressure probe traverses from hub to shroud diffuser width at different radial locations between the two diffuser geometrical *** simulations are also realized with the commercial codes Star CCm+7.02.011 and *** rotor and fully unsteady calculations of the whole pump have been *** between numerical results,previous experimental PIV results and new probe traverses one's are presented and discussed for one mass flow *** this respect,a first attempt to take into account fluid leakages between the rotating and fixed part of the pump has been checked since it may affects the real flow structure inside the diffuser.

A Systems Biology Approach for Studying Heterotopic Ossification： Proteomic Analysis of Clinical Serum and Tissue Samples

Heterotopic ossification （HO） refers to the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissue. Although some of the underlying processes of HO have been described, there are currently no clinical tests using validated biomarkers for predicting HO formation. As such, the diagnosis is made radiographically after HO has formed. To identify potential and novel biomarkers for HO, we used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation （iTRAQ） and high-throughput antibody arrays to produce a semi-quantitative proteomics survey of serum and tissue from subjects with （HO ＋） and without （HO-） heterotopic ossification. The resulting data were then analyzed using a systems biology approach. We found that serum samples from subjects experiencing traumatic injuries with resulting HO have a different proteomic expression controls. Subsequent quantitative ELISA identified profile compared to those from the matched five blood serum proteins that were differentially regulated between the HO-- and HO- groups. Compared to HO- samples, the amount of insulin-like growth factor I （IGF1） was up-regulated in HO＋ samples, whereas a lower amount of osteopontin （OPN）, myeloperoxidase （mPO）, runt-related transcription factor 2 （RUNX2）,and growth differentiation factor 2 or bone morphogenetic protein 9 （BmP-9） was found in HO ＋ samples （Welch two sample t-test; P 〈 0.05）. These proteins, in combination with potential serum biomarkers previously reported, are key candidates for a serum diagnostic panel that may enable early detection of HO prior to radiographic and clinical manifestations.
