Validation of a Swahili version of the World Health Organization 5-item well-being index among adults living with HIV and epilepsy in rural coastal Kenya

Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the World Health Organization’s five item well-being index(WHO-5)when administered to adults living with HIV or epilepsy in a rural setting at the coast of ***:A case control study design was conducted among 230 adults aged 18-50 years,who comprised 147 cases(63 living with epilepsy and 84 living with HIV)and 83 healthy *** participants were administered to a faceto-face interview during which they completed the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index,the Major Depression Inventory(MDI)and responded to some items on their socio-demographic *** to assess internal consistency,construct validity,discriminant validity,and convergent validity of the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index was conducted.A multivariate regression was carried out to assess the association between psychological wellbeing(assessed using Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index)and having a chronic illness(HIV or epilepsy).Results:The Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index demonstrated good internal consistency with Cronbach alpha ranges of 0.86-0.88 among the three study *** tool had good discriminant validity.A one factor structure of the tool was obtained from confirmatory factor analysis(overall Comparative Fit Index=1.00,Tuckler Lewis Index=1.01,Root Mean Square of Error Approximation=0.00).Living with HIV or epilepsy in comparison to being a healthy control was significantly associated with greater odds of having sub-optimal psychological ***:Our findings demonstrate that the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index has good psychometric properties and is appropriate for use to evaluate psychological well-being among adults living with chronic conditions such as HIV or epilepsy from a rural low resource setting in *** its brevity and ease of use,the Swahili version of WHO-5 well-being index could potentially be used by lay wor

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). However, the use of tnGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Synthesis and characterization of Ce_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)Fe_(0.8)Co_(0.2)O_(3–δ) perovskite material:Potential cathode material for low temperature SOFCs

A sol-gel method and a modified chemical vapour deposition technique were used to produce nanostructured Ce0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3-δ materials at temperatures as low as 400 ℃. Powders were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, Raman spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM） with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEM）, and nitrogen sorption at 77 K. FTIR spectra showed that the sol-gel method resulted in residual carbon groups on the materials after calcination, while the Raman and XRD analysis confirmed that both synthesis methods resulted in cubic perovskite structure. However, the chemical va- pour deposition （CVD） method resulted in materials with a smaller crystallite size when compared to those prepared via the sol-gel route. The overall morphology of the powders was irregularly shaped aggregated particles as observed by SEM and HRTEM. In addition, HRTEM analysis showed that the materials were highly crystalline. Textural analysis revealed the powders had some mesoporosity, and the surface areas were 76.69 and 65.90 m2/g for materials synthesized using the CVD and sol-gel methods, respectively. The synthesized perovskite powders were used to fabricate button cells employing samarium doped ceria （SDC） as the electrolyte and niO/SDC as the anode materials. As cathode materials, the maximum power density observed was 308.4 mW/cm2 at 500℃.

Cancer initiation and progression is the result of an accumulation of mutations inkey tumor suppressor genes, mismatch repair genes, or oncogenes, which impact cancer cell growth, death, and differentiation. Mutations occurring in cancer tissue are termed somatic; whereas, heritable mutatons that may be passed onto subsequent generations occur in germline DnA. It is these germline mutations that can lead to cancer family syndromeswhereby family members carrying a deleterious germline mutation have an increased susceptibility to certain cancer phenotypes. Common features of hereditary cancer syndromes include early age-of-onset, multiple affected generations, rare tumor types, and/or multiple primary malignancies.

Efficient noninvasive FHB Estimation using RGB Images from a novel Multiyear,Multirater Dataset

Fusarium head blight(FHB)is one of the most prevalent wheat diseases,causing substantial yield losses and health *** phenotyping of FHB is crucial for accelerating resistance breeding,but currently used methods are time-consuming and *** present article suggests a noninvasive classification model for FHB severity estimation using red–green–blue(RGB)images,without requiring extensive *** model accepts images taken from consumer-grade,low-cost RGB cameras and classifies the FHB severity into 6 ordinal *** addition,we introduce a novel dataset consisting of around 3,000 images from 3 different years(2020,2021,and 2022)and 2 FHB severity assessments per image from independent *** used a pretrained Efficientnet(size b0),redesigned as a regression *** results demonstrate that the interrater reliability(Cohen’s kappa,κ)is substantially lower than the achieved individual network-to-rater results,e.g.,0.68 and 0.76 for the data captured in 2020,*** model shows a generalization effect when trained with data from multiple years and tested on data from an independent ***,using the images from 2020 and 2021 for training and 2022 for testing,we improved the F_(1)^(w) score by 0.14,the accuracy by 0.11,κ by 0.12,and reduced the root mean squared error by 0.5 compared to the best network trained only on a single year’s *** proposed lightweight model and methods could be deployed on mobile devices to automatically and objectively assess FHB severity with images from low-cost RGB *** source code and the dataset are available at https://***/cvims/FHB_classification.

Stable niO-CeO_(2) nanoparticles with improved carbon resistance for methane dry reforming

High surface area mixed oxide 8.7%niO-CeO_(2) nanoparticles(122 m2/g;6-7 nm)were prepared using a reversed microemulsion method,and were tested for dry methane reforming(DRM).The catalytic activity of these nanoparticles remains stable under the severe conditions of DRM(700℃),and they show better carbon resistance than conventional niO-CeO_(2) catalysts prepared without control of the *** activity and selectivity of nanoparticles and reference catalyst are similar,but nanoparticles reduce the accumulation of carbon by 63%during the DRM tests,which is a key feature for this *** and H_(2)-TPR suggest that the improved carbon resistance of the nanoparticles is due to the better interaction and cooperation between niO and CeO_(2) mixed *** nanoparticles,the participation of cerium cations in the redox processes taking place during DRM stabilizes cationic species of *** the contrary,the catalyst prepared without control of the size suffers segregation of ni during DRM reaction,and segregated ni explains the higher catalytic formation of carbon.
