The incidence of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) has grown by a factor of 6.4 between 1973 and 2012 (1). According to the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), some 50% of all NEN, 3.56×10^5, are gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) in origin, including 1.05, 10.4, 0.48×10^5 of the small intestine, rectum, and pancreas, respectively. Like the Spanish group, others have reported a higher incidence of pancreatic NEN (P-NEN) (2). Given its typically indolent course, GEP-NENs are the second most prevalent tumors of the digestive system, surpassed only by colorectal cancer, underscoring the importance of understanding them, their diagnosis, and efficient treatment strategies.

A strain of Chytriomyces hyalinus fungus was applied as a pretreatment on industrial wastewater pollutant using electrocoagulations column of aluminum electrodes in a continuous system. The parameters considered in this experiment include pH, conductivity, color, turbidity, COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) nitrate, nitrite, and SB (sporangia biomass). Biological and electrocoagulations treatments had the next conditions: Chytriomyces hyalinus solutions 1:10, 60 min of biological treatment, 50 mL/min flow, constant ventilations, 15 min of electrocoagulations time and 3.4 A of electrical current. Color and turbidity values dropped with a 90% efficiency (2700 to170 Pt-Co;120 to10 FAU, respectively), COD 68% (2100 to 672 mg/L), BOD5 70% (650 to 195 mg/L), nitrate showed an 86% (3.8 to 0.5 mg/L), finally nitrite with a 60% amount reduction (1.5 to 0.6 mg/L). For SB parameter, there was a value rising as same as the treatment time (r2 = 0.90) carrying out a y = 94.302e0.0356x model. These results reveal a positive outcome of Chytriomyces hyalinus on industrial wastewater pollutants pre-treated with aluminium electrocoagulations in a continuous system.

High blood pressure and other non-communicable diseases associated with excessive salt/sodium consumption represent a major challenge to the health of the world’s population. Consumption is a human behavior that is usually influenced by significant factors, internal and external to people. The design of a national social marketing intervention is described. The whole process was developed by a national interdisciplinary team over the course of a decade (2011-2022). Its purpose is to promote changes in this behavior, through gradual reduction of salt/sodium consumption in the target populations of Costa Rica, for the prevention and control of associated diseases. The process includes four phases: research, situation analysis, creation of a proposal for the social marketing strategy, and implementation and evaluation. Last phase was not developed by the research team. The main inputs used to design this intervention were the data generated in three qualitative researchers carried out by the national work team and the social marketing regional plan for salt consumption reduction in Latin America. By analyzing these research data, marketing mix components were determined for designing the intervention. The marketing strategy is promotional and is based on encouraging a natural diet with less sodium using natural seasonings and adding less discretional salt and industrialized products high in sodium, in the preparation of food and dishes. The primary key audience is the mother of the school-aged child, and the secondary is the adult caregivers of this child. It is expected that in the short term, health promoters from different government and non-state sectors will contribute to the implementation of the national social marketing plan, to achieve, in the medium or long term, a consumption that approaches five grams of salt per person per day. Objective: The objective is to compare a regular ovitrap versus an innovated larvitrap for monitoring Aedes spp. populations. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 regular ovitraps and 20 innovated larvitraps were placed in pairs in 20 houses from the 5 de Febrero neighborhood in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico. The innovation consisted in the incorporation of a valve in the lower part of a half tire to drain the contents in a 2 L collection container. The evaluation was carried out during five weeks, collecting eggs and larvae from the ovitraps and innovated larvitraps, respectively. Positivity indexes and insectary production of adult Aedes spp. mosquitoes were compared by collection type. Results: Average positivity index for the five weeks period were 60% for ovitraps and 91.25% for innovated larvitraps. During the five weeks, 4043 Ae. aegypti and 703 Ae. albopictus adult mosquitoes were produced in the insectary from the eggs collected from ovitraps, while from innovated larvitraps were 9014 Ae. aegypti, 1205 Ae. albopictus, and 15 Culex spp. Conclusion: Collection by the innovated larvitrap was more efficient, collecting 3.56 times more Ae. aegypti than with ovitraps, using approximately the same effort in time for replacing the filter paper from traditional 1 L ovitraps. Since the logistics for the storage and placement of larvitraps may still be a disadvantage in comparison with ovitraps, their use could be specifically intended in sentinel sites for mosquito population monitoring for entomological surveillance purposes.

Background: Despite the physical and chemical effort to control Aedes aegypti, the arboviruses transmission in the south of Mexico remains latent. Trying to improve the methods of entomological surveillance routinely used, whether the estimation of resistance to insecticides used for its control, as well as their enzyme mechanisms, were influenced by the phase in which the mosquitoes were collected through three different collection methods was investigated. Materials and Methods: Mosquito collections from the “5 de Febrero” neighborhood in Tapachula, Mexico were obtained by ovitraps, larvitraps, and a CDC backpack aspirator. Insecticide resistance of F1 females was determined by WHO diagnostic doses and resistance ratios (RR50), furthermore, levels of insecticide metabolism enzymes were determined by biochemical assays. Results: Overall, in mosquitoes collected by ovitraps, larvitraps, and CDC backpack aspirator respectively, the low mortalities obtained with the discriminant dose to Malathion (27.57%, 26.97%, and 26.91%), and to Bendiocarb (50.5%, 45.36%, and 54.97%) suggest resistance. However, LC50 for Malathion (0.922, 0.934, and 0.915) and for Bendiocarb (0.112, 0.109, and 0.107);and the low resistance ratios (RR50) for Malathion (3.34, 3.29, and 3.27) and for Bendiocarb (2.15, 2.1, and 2.06) does not suggest resistance. Although a slight numerical variation is observed between the three LC50 values, the overlap observed between their confidence intervals allows us to assume that there were no differences between the three methods. Background: This document includes recommendations and guidelines issued by a group of Mexican researchers and specialists gathered in the First National Colloquium for the Diagnosis and Management of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) by initiative of Instituto Nacional de Cancerología and with the support of the Leukaemia Department of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Mexico lacks of updated information taken from its own reality on the diagnosis and treatment of CML and other haematological disorders;besides, there are no national guidelines. Aim: To publish a consensus document with guidelines for the management of CML adjusted to the national environment and overall characteristics. Method: The participants answered a DELPHI questionnaire about the overall aspects of the disease, aiming to target controversial topics, discuss them in the colloquium, and to agree on the best ones. After those meetings, a final document was drawn up. Results: The group presents recommendations for definition, diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and treatment of CML in Mexico. Conclusions: Having consensus guidelines for the clinical management of CML in our country will enable the consensual practice of Mexican specialists regarding the clinical approach to CML, as well as optimize the resources which allow the rational planning of the medical care strategies.
