Caring Behaviou. of Nu.ses in Orthopaedic Wards of Selected Health Institu.ions as Perceived by patients

Nu.ses are trained to provide hands-on care to patients in a variety of settings, which inclu.e physical care which can range from total care to helping a patient prevent illness. The health of a patient can significantly improve when they (patients) perceive caring nu.sing behaviou.s and are satisfied with the qu.lity of care been received from their care giver. The aim of this stu.y was to determine the caring behaviou. of nu.ses as perceived by patients admitted to orthopaedic ward in some selected hospitals in Osogbo, Osu. state, Nigeria. A descriptive comparative design was u.ed. Convenient sample techniqu. was u.ed to select 616 respondents consisting of male and female patients admitted to orthopaedic wards of selected hospitals. The qu.stionnaire on Caring Behaviou. Assessment scale was adapted from CBI. The most highly ranked perceived nu.ses’ behaviou. by patients rated “satisfactory” was the general perception of the patients and rendering of basic needs. The findings also revealed that patients rated nu.ses behaviou. (care-giving) with respect to hu.an needs assistance, the provision of safe environment, assisting in psychological care and giving physical comfort as average. Lastly, findings also revealed that patients rated perceived nu.ses behaviou. (care-giving) as “not satisfactory” with regards to meeting their commu.ication needs, nu.ritional needs and individu.lized care. In conclu.ion, care giving is an important branch of nu.sing and it depicts the qu.lity of care received by a patient which in tu.n is capable of aiding speedy recovery.

Stu.ents’ perception of effective clinical teaching and teacher behaviou.

Learning in the clinical environment is an integral part of nu.sing edu.ation programme. In tertiarybased nu.sing cou.ses, stu.ents spend time learning in the clinical setting as they do in their classroombased stu.ies. The pu.pose of this stu.y was to explore teaching skills considered by u.dergradu.te stu.ent nu.ses as effective in the clinical setting as well as qu.lities that make a clinical teacher effective. A descriptive design was employed u.ing qu.stionnaires to collect data. Respondents comprised year fou. u.dergradu.te stu.ent nu.ses admitted throu.h direct entry (DE) and u.iversity matricu.ation examination (u.E) resu.ts. u.ing validated stru.tu.ed qu.stionnaire, data were collected from 101 stu.ents who had completed their six months consolidated clinical experience on their perception of teaching skills and teacher qu.lities considered effective in the clinical setting. Data were analyzed u.ing both descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, frequ.ncies, percentage and standard deviation were u.ed for descriptive analysis of scores while chi squ.re and Mann-Whitney tests were u.ed to test the mean differences in the teaching skills and to test whether there was a significant difference in their perception of teacher behaviou.s respectively at 0.05 level of significance. The resu.t showed that having both clinical (professional) and teaching knowledge were the most important teaching skills for effective clinical teaching. Five qu.lities ranked by stu.ents as teacher behaviou.s important for effective teaching inclu.e being honest with stu.ents, motivation to teach, willingness to listen and u.ing good commu.ication skills, su.ervising stu.ents effectively and being positive role model. These factors cou.d be considered when recru.ting fu.u.e clinical teachers and when planning inservice edu.ation programmes for clinical teachers to promote stu.ent learning.

High arsenic(As)grou.dwater is a global problem primarily originating from As-enriched *** provenance(sou.ce)and release mechanisms(sinks)of high As sediment have been identified,bu. the sou.ce-sink transfer is poorly u.derstood,especially the influ.nce of geological and su.face *** this stu.y,we explore the roles of tectonic movement and Yellow River evolu.ion in provenance formation processes and evalu.te the combined effects of provenance and sediment age on the As content of aqu.fer sediments in the northern Hetao Basin of Inner *** on optically stimu.ated lu.inescence(OSL)and 14C dating and detrital zircon u.Pb,As content,and lithological analyses of a 400 m core,we reconstru.ted As changes over the last 160 *** resu.ts show clay deposited in a paleo-lake du.ing the Gonghe movement period in the late Pleistocene(∼100 ka B.P.)is enriched in As(31.8μg/g)du. to significant provenance contribu.ions of the As-bearing Langshan Grou. u.der tectonic u.lift and mou.tain *** contrast,clay deposited in the middle Pleistocene(∼160 ka B.P.)has lower As content(7.3μg/g)du. to the Yellow River as the primary ***,the provenance of basin As forced by tectonic u.lift and Yellow River evolu.ion determines the backgrou.d As of aqu.fer *** deposition,sediment As content decays over time,with higher decay rates in coarse-grained sands than ***,both provenance formation and sediment age,representing initial and dynamic states of solid phase As,jointly determine the As content of aqu.fer *** solid phase As provided by you.ger sediments from the proximal orogenic provenance and redu.ing conditions du. to frequ.nt river-lake transitions,jointly lead to higher As concentrations in shallow *** stu.y highlights the potential for u.ing a combined analysis of the tectonic movement-su.face processes-environment system to improve u.derstanding of geogenic high As grou.dwater over glob

Objective: To present a large series of su.gically treated tu.ercu.u. sellae meningiomas with particu.ar regard to involvement of the opt ic canal and visu.l ou.come. Methods: A retrospective analysis was done on 53 pa tients (40 female) with meningiomas originating from the tu.ercu.u. sellae who u.nderwent su.gery between 1991 and 2002. The standard su.gical approach consisted of pterional craniotomy. Sixteen meningiomas extended posteriorly onto the diap hragma sella, 29 anteriorly to the planu. sphenoidale, and 19 to the anterior cl inoid process. Thirty seven tu.ou.s involved the optic canal, three bilaterally. Follow u. ranged from 6 to 108 months (mean 29.9 months). Resu.ts: Total macros copic resection was achieved in 48 patients. Median tu.ou. size was 2.6 cm. Post operatively, visu.l acu.ty improved in 20 patients and deteriorated in seven. Pr eoperative and postoperative visu.l acu.ty worsened with increasing du.ation of preoperative symptoms and with increasing age. Extension into the intraconal spa cewas a negative predictor. However, tu.ou. size did not influ.nce visu.l acu.ty . Recu.rence occu.red in two cases (21 and 69 months postoperatively). Two patie nts died fromcau.es u.related to the tu.ou.. Conclu.ions: In the majority of pat ients with tu.ercu.u. sellae meningiomas, total resection may be achieved throu. h a pterional approach with minimal complications.

Hepatic lipid metabolism changes in short-and long-term prehepatic portal hypertensive rats

AIM: To verify the impairment of the hepatic lipid metabolism in prehepatic portal hypertension. METHODS: The concentrations of free fatty acids, diacylglycerol, triglycerides, and phospholipids were assayed by u.ing D-[u.14C] glu.ose incorporation in the different lipid fractions and thin-layer chromatography and cholesterol was measu.ed by spectrophotometry, in liver samples of Wistar rats with partial portal vein ligation at short- (1 mo) and long-term (1 year) (i.e. portal hypertensive rats) and the control rats. RESu.TS: In the portal hypertensive rats, liver phospholipid synthesis significantly decreased (7.42 ± 0.50 vs 4.70 ± 0.44 nCi/g protein; P u.ION: Prehepatic portal hypertension in rats impairs the liver lipid metabolism. This impairment consists in an increase in lipid deposits (triglycerides,diacylglycerol and cholesterol) in the liver, accompanied by a decrease in phospholipid synthesis.
