Tri-axial accelerometry shows differences in energy expenditure and parental effort throughout the breeding season in long-lived raptors

Cutting-edge technologies are extremely useful to develop new workflows in studying ecological data,particularly to understand animal behavior and movement trajectories at the individual level.Although parental care is a well-studied phenomenon,most studies have been focused on direct observational or video recording data,as well as experimental manipulation.Therefore,what happens out of our sight still remains unknown.Using high-frequency GPS/GSM dataloggers and tri-axial accelerometers we monitored 25 Bonelli’s eagles Aquila fasciata during the breeding season to understand parental activities from a broader perspective.We used recursive data,measured as number of visits and residence time,to reveal nest attendance patterns of biparental care with role specialization between sexes.Accelerometry data interpreted as the overall dynamic body acceleration,a proxy of energy expenditure,showed strong differences in parental effort throughout the breeding season and between sexes.Thereby,males increased substantially their energetic requirements,due to the increased workload,while females spent most of the time on the nest.Furthermore,during critical phases of the breeding season,a low percentage of suitable hunting spots in eagles’territories led them to increase their ranging behavior in order to find food,with important consequences in energy consumption and mortality risk.Our results highlight the crucial role of males in raptor species exhibiting biparental care.Finally,we exemplify how biologging technologies are an adequate and objective method to study parental care in raptors as well as to get deeper insight into breeding ecology of birds in general.

Wind effects on the migration routes of trans-Saharan soaring raptors： geographical, seasonal, and interspecific variation

Wind is among the most important environmental factors shaping birds' migration patterns. Birds must deal with the displacement caused by crosswinds and their behavior can vary according to different factors such as flight mode, migratory season, experience, and distance to goal areas. Here we analyze the relationship between wind and migratory movements of three raptor species which migrate by soaring-gliding flight: Egyptian vulture , booted eagle , and short-toed snake eagle . We analyzed daily migratory segments (i.e., the path joining consecutive roosting locations) using data recorded by GPS satellite telemetry. Daily movements of Egyptian vultures and booted eagles were significantly affected by tailwinds during both autumn and spring migrations. In contrast, daily movements of short-toed eagles were only significantly affected by tailwinds during autumn migration. The effect of crosswinds was significant in all cases. Interestingly, Egyptian vultures and booted eagles showed latitudinal differences in their behavior: both species compensated more frequently at the onset of autumn migration and, at the end of the season when reaching their wintering areas, the proportion of drift segments was higher. In contrast, there was a higher drift at the onset of spring migration and a higher compensation at the end. Our results highlight the effect of wind patterns on the migratory routes of soaring raptors, with different outcomes in relation to species, season, and latitude, ultimately shaping the loop migration patterns that current tracking techniques are showing to be widespread in many long distance migrants.

Individual repeatability in timing and spatial flexibility of migration routes of trans-Saharan migratory raptors

Satellite-tracking technology has allowed scientists to make a quantum leap in the field of migration ecology. Nowadays, the basic description of migratory routes of many species of birds has been reported. However, the investigation of bird migration at individual level (i.e. repeatability in migratory routes and timing) still remains seldom explored. Here, we investigated repeated migratory trips of a trans-Saharan endangered migratory raptor, the Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus, tracked by GPS satellite telemetry. We compared between- and within-individual variation in migratory routes and timing in order to assess the degree of repeatability (or conversely, the flexibility) in migration. To this end, we analysed a dataset of 48 trips (23 springs and 25 autumns) recorded for six adult birds during 2007-2013. Our results showed consistent migration timing at the individual level, both in spring and autumn. Interestingly, there was a high degree of flexibility in the routes followed by the same individual in different years, probably due to variations in meteorological conditions. Contrary to expectations of a faster migration in spring than in autumn owing to a time-minimization strategy for breeding, birds spent less time in autumn migration (13±2days, range = 9-18d) than in spring migration (19±3days, range = 13-26d), which can be explained by differences in environmental con- ditions en route. Egyptian vultures showed a consistent clockwise loop migration through western Africa, following more easterly routes in autumn than in spring. Finally, our results provide supporting evidence of low phenotypic plasticity in timing of migration (i.e. strong endogenous control of migration) and high flexibility in routes [Current Zoology 60 (5):642-652, 2014].

The effectiveness of monitoring and early-warning systems for ground deformation phenomena,such as sinkholes,depends on their ability to accurately resolve the ongoing ground displacement and detect the subtle deformation preceding catastrophic failures.Sagging sinkholes with a slow subsidence rate and diffuse edges pose a significant challenge for subsidence monitoring due to the low deformation rates and limited lateral strain gradients.In this work,we satisfactorily illustrate the practicality of the Brillouin optical time domain analysis(BOTDA)to measure the spatial-temporal patterns of the vertical displacement in such challenging slow-moving sagging sinkholes.To assess the performance of the approach,we compare the strain recorded by the distributed optical fiber sensor with the vertical displacement measured by high-precision leveling.The results show a good spatial correlation with the ability to identify the maximum subsidence point.There is also a good temporal correlation with the detection of an acceleration phase in the subsidence associated with a flood event.

TML:a language to specify aerial robotic missions for the framework Aerostack

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to describe the specification language TML for adaptive mission plans that the authors designed and implemented for the open-source framework Aerostack for aerial robotics.Design/methodology/approach–The TML language combines a task-based hierarchical approach together with a more flexible representation,rule-based reactive planning,to facilitate adaptability.This approach includes additional notions that abstract programming details.The authors built an interpreter integrated in the software framework Aerostack.The interpreter was validated with flight experiments for multi-robot missions in dynamic environments.Findings–The experiments proved that the TML language is easy to use and expressive enough to formulate adaptive missions in dynamic environments.The experiments also showed that the TML interpreter is efficient to execute multi-robot aerial missions and reusable for different platforms.The TML interpreter is able to verify the mission plan before its execution,which increases robustness and safety,avoiding the execution of certain plans that are not feasible.Originality/value–One of the main contributions of this work is the availability of a reliable solution to specify aerial mission plans,integrated in an active open-source project with periodic releases.To the best knowledge of the authors,there are not solutions similar to this in other active open-source projects.As additional contributions,TML uses an original combination of representations for adaptive mission plans(i.***.task trees with original abstract notions and rule-based reactive planning)together with the demonstration of its adequacy for aerial robotics.

Background Despite the radiological and analytical advances of the last decades,there is still a significant rate of diagnostic error in pediatric acute appendicitis.In recent years,multiple biomarkers have emerged as potential diagnostic tools.This study aimed to examine the diagnostic performance of serum interleukin-6 in pediatric acute appendicitis.Methods We conducted a systematic review of the literature that involved an extensive search in the main databases of medical bibliography(Medline,PubMed,Web of Science and SciELO).Two independent reviewers selected the relevant articles based on the previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria.Methodological quality of the selected article was rated using the QUADAS2 index.Data extraction was performed by two independent reviewers.Results The research in the medical bibliography databases resulted in 68 articles.We removed 26 duplicates.Among the remaining 42 articles,we excluded 33 following the inclusion and exclusion criteria.Of the final 9 studies included in this review,8 provided measured serum interleukin-6 values,and all of them reported significant differences between groups,but inconsistent results regarding sensitivity and specificity.Conclusions The diagnostic performance of interleukine-6 alone for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in children is limited.The sensitivity and specificity of interleukine-6 for the diagnosis of non-complicated acute appendicitis in the pediatric population are moderate but increased in complicated appendicitis.There seems to be a direct relationship between serum level of interleukin-6 and the hours of evolution of abdominal pain in children with acute appendicitis.The increasingly widespread use of non-operative management of acute appendicitis warrants further exploration of the classificatory potential of this marker between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis.We consider that this may be an avenue of research to explore in the future.

The second and final year of the Erasmus Plus programme’Innovative Education and Training in high power laser plasmas’,otherwise known as PowerLaPs,is described.The PowerLaPs programme employs an innovative paradigm in that it is a multi-centre programme,where teaching takes place in five separate institutes with a range of different aims and styles of delivery.The’in-class’time is limited to 4 weeks a year,and the programme spans 2 years.PowerLaPs aims to train students from across Europe in theoretical,applied and laboratory skills relevant to the pursuit of research in laser plasma interaction physics and inertial confinement fusion.Lectures are intermingled with laboratory sessions and continuous assessment activities.The programme,which is led by workers from the Hellenic Mediterranean University and supported by co-workers from the Queen’s University Belfast,the University of Bordeaux,the Czech Technical University in Prague,Ecole Polytechnique,the University of Ioannina,the University of Salamanca and the University of York,has just finished its second and final year.Six Learning Teaching Training activities have been held at the Queen’s University Belfast,the University of Bordeaux,the Czech Technical University,the University of Salamanca and the Institute of Plasma Physics and Lasers of the Hellenic Mediterranean University.The last of these institutes hosted two 2-week-long Intensive Programmes,while the activities at the other four universities were each 5 days in length.In addition,a’Multiplier Event’was held at the University of Ioannina,which will be briefly described.In this second year,the work has concentrated on training in both experimental diagnostics and simulation techniques appropriate to the study of plasma physics,high power laser matter interactions and high energy density physics.The nature of the programme will be described in detail,and some metrics relating to the activities carried out will be presented.In particular,this paper will focus on the overall assessment of the programme.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced background.This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS experiment.Two taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
