Pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema: Is the emphysema type associated with the pattern of fibrosis?

AIM: To investigate whether the predominant emphysema type is associated with the high resolution computed tomography(HRCT) pattern of fibrosis in combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema(CPFE).METHODS: Fifty-three smokers with upper lobe emphysema and lower lobe pulmonary fibrosis on- HRCT-were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were stratified into 3 groups according to the predominant type of emphysema: Centrilobular(CLE), paraseptal(PSE), CLE = PSE. Patients were also stratified into 3 other groups according to the predominant type of fibrosis on HRCT: Typical usual interstitial pneumonia(UIP), probable UIP and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia(NSIP). HRCTs were scored at 5 predetermined levels for the coarseness of fibrosis(Coarseness), extent of emphysema(emphysema), extent of interstitial lung disease(Tot Ext ILD), extent of reticular pattern not otherwise specified(Ret NOS), extent of ground glass opacity with traction bronchiectasis(extG GOBx), extent of pure ground glass opacity and extent of honeycombing. HRCT mean scores, pulmonary function tests, diffusion capacity(DLCO) and systolic pulmonary arterial pressure were compared among the groups.RESULTS: The predominant type of emphysema was strongly correlated with the predominant type of fibrosis. The centrilobular emphysema group exhibited a significantly higher extent of emphysema(P < 0.001) and a lower extent of interstitial lung disease(P < 0.002), reticular pattern not otherwise specified(P < 0.023), extent of ground glass opacity with traction bronchiectasis(P < 0.002), extent of honeycombing(P < 0.001) and coarseness of fibrosis(P < 0.001) than the paraseptal group. The NSIP group exhibited a significantly higher extent of emphysema(P < 0.05), total lung capacity(P < 0.01) and diffusion capacity(DLCO)(P < 0.05) than the typical UIP group. Prognostic nutritional index in predicting survival of patients with gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma: A systematic review

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is the third most common cause of cancer related death worldwide.Surgery with or without chemotherapy is the most common approach with curative intent;however,the prognosis is poor as mortality rates remain high.Several indexes have been proposed in the past few years in order to estimate the survival of patients undergoing gastrectomy.The preoperative nutritional status of gastric cancer patients has recently gained attention as a factor that could affect the postoperative course and various indexes have been developed.The aim of this systematic review was to assess the role of the prognostic nutritional index(PNI)in predicting the survival of patients with gastric or gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma who underwent gastrectomy with curative intent.AIM To investigate the role of PNI in predicting the survival of patients with gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma.METHODS A thorough literature search of PubMed and the Cochrane library was performed for studies comparing the overall survival(OS)of patients with gastric or gastroesophageal cancer after surgical resection depending on the preoperative PNI value.The PRISMA algorithm was used in the screening process and finally 16 studies were included in this systematic review.The review protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews(PRO) RESULTS Sixteen studies involving 14551 patients with gastric or esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma undergoing open or laparoscopic or robotic gastrectomy with or without adjuvant chemotherapy were included in this systematic review.The patients were divided into high-and low-PNI groups according to cut-off values that were set according to previous reports or by using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in each individual study.The 5-year OS of patients in the low-PNI groups ranged between 39%and 70.6%,while in the high-PNI groups,it ranged between 54.9%and 95.8%.In most of the included studies,patients with high preoperative PNI showed

Hidden diversity revealed in the freshwater snails,Bythinella and Pseudamnicola,in the Island of Crete

Crete with its complex geomorphological history is the island with the highest number of endemism observed in animal and plant taxa throughout the Aegean archipelago.While other groups of organisms within Crete are well-studied,the freshwater gastropod fauna still remains poorly investigated.Bythinella and Pseudamnicola,are 2 genera of freshwater springsnails,both present on the island,inhabiting springs and other freshwater habitats.Here,we conduct a comprehensive study on the distribution of the different genetic lineages of the 2 gastropod genera in order to assess the mode of their differentiation on the island and infer the actual number of species present in the island.Towards these aims,sequence data from the mitochondrial gene were used and analyzed within a phylogenetic framework.For Bythinella,our results strongly support at least 5 delineated Bythinella spp.inhabiting Crete,which correspond to the already described species from previous studies with the addition of a new one.Bythinella analyses reveal an old time-frame of differentiation with vicariant phenomena being more likely the main drivers shaping the present-day distribution of the genus’genetic lineages.For Pseudamnicola,our data indicate the presence of at least 2 delineated Pseudamnicola spp.with a differentiation more consistent to an isolation-by-distance pattern of a relatively recent origin.Dispersion processes followed by isolation of the populations and/or recent speciation,seem to be the underlying process for the current distribution of Pseudamnicola lineages.

The musculoskeletal system involves multiple tissues which are constantly exposed to being exposed to various biological and mechanical stimuli.As such,isolating and studying a particular system from a complex human clinical environment is not always a realistic expectation.On top of that,recruitment limitations,in addition to the nature of orthopaedic interventions and their associated cost,sometimes preclude consideration of human trials to answer a clinical question.Therefore,in this mini review,we sought to rationalize the rapid evolution of biomedical research at a basic scientific level and explain why the perception of orthopaedic conditions has fundamentally changed over the last decades.In more detail,we highlight that the number of orthopaedic in vitro publications has soared since 1990.Last but not least,we elaborated on the minimum requirements for conducting a scientifically sound infection-related laboratory experiment to offer valuable information to clinical practitioners.We also explained the rationale behind implementing molecular biology techniques,ex vivo experiments,and artificial intelligence in this type of laboratory research.

Malignant mesothelioma(MM)is a rare,aggressive solid tumor with limited therapeutic options and poor therapeutic response.The role of immunotherapy in MM is now well established and therapeutic options,such as checkpoint inhibitors,are increasingly being approved.Chimeric antigen receptor(CAR)-T cell therapy is successfully implemented in several hematologic cancers,but currently has inadequate effect in solid tumors,owing to several limitations,such as trafficking and infiltration,limited T cell persistence and exhaustion,the immunosuppressive TME and tumor antigen heterogeneity.The lack of uniform and universal expression of tumor-associated antigens(TAAs)on tumor cells,as well as TAA heterogeneity following tumor editing post-therapy,are issues of significant importance to CAR-T cell and associated antigen-targeting therapies.Our review discusses the concept of tumor antigen heterogeneity in MM,the consequences for CAR-T cell therapies and the strategies to overcome it.

The Role of Trait Activation Theory in Occupational Behavior:A Systematic Review

The Trait Activation Theory(TAT)is widely regarded as the most influential personality theory approach in psychology.The purpose of this study is to analyze the TAT’s role in the contemporary workplace.Which personality traits are more likely to predict work success?Which characteristics should businesses prioritize throughout the recruiting and selection processes?According to the Trait Activation Theory,what is the significance of motivation in the workplace and how can employers find employees who can be more productive,efficient,and involved in the organization’s goals?A systematic review of past recent research was used to answer the questions raised above.Following the gathering and examination of multiple recent publications on the issue,it was determined that the use of this model had a favorable impact on individual and group performance,working relationships,manager job performance,and workplace creativity.

Experimental Investigation of Inhibition Efficiency of Crocin for Chloride-Induced Corrosion of Aluminum Alloys

The use of Crocin, derived from the flowers of Crocus sativus, is investigated as corrosion inhibitor for the AA1050, AA5083, AA5754 and AA6082 aluminum alloys in chloride ions environment. Aluminum and aluminum alloys are subjected to corrosion in the aggressive environment of chlorides, so several green corrosion inhibitors, mostly of plant origin, with minimum impact on health and the environment have been examined. In this study, the inhibition efficiency of 1.25 mM Crocin in a 0.01 M NaCl corrosive solution was assessed via electrochemical corrosion techniques and gravimetric mass loss measurements of the aluminum alloys. The surface of the specimens was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Stereomicroscopy and Glossiness measurements. Experimental results reveal the protective anticorrosive action of Crocin for all aluminum alloys in the sodium chloride medium.

On the Far Field Pattern for Acoustic Scattering by a Piecewise Homogeneous Obstacle in Two Dimensions

A time-harmonic plane acoustic wave is scattered by a piecewise homogeneous obstacle with a penetrable or impenetrable core. We construct in the close form an integral representation for the far field pattern in which we have incorporated the physical and geometrical characteristics of the scatterer. Through this representation, we obtain the far field pattern for this scatterer. We prove scattering relations between the far field patterns of two scattering problems due to two distinct incident waves on the same scatterer. In particular, we prove reciprocity and general scattering theorems. The optical theorem, connecting the total power that the scatterer extracts from the incident plane wave either by radiation or by absorption with the corresponding far field pattern of an incident plane wave, is recovered as a corollary of the general scattering theorem. Moreover, if we consider incident waves to be both a plane and a spherical, we derive a mixed reciprocity theorem. We define the corresponding far field operators and using these relations, we prove some properties that can be used for solving inverse scattering problems.
