Nowadays,sustainability and circular economy are two principles to be pursued in all *** road pavement engineering,they can be put into practice through the partial substitution of bitumen with industrial residues and by-products deriving from renewable *** this framework,this paper presents an extensive investigation of the chemical,morphological and rheological properties of bio-binders obtained by mixing a conventional 50/70 bitumen with different percentages by weight(0,5%,10%and 15%)of a renewable bio-oil,generated as a residue in the processing of wood into pulp and *** show that overall the bio-oil provides a softening effect,which,in terms of performance,leads to an improvement of the low-temperature behaviour and fatigue resistance with respect to the control bitumen,in spite of an increased tendency to permanent *** no chemical reaction appears to occur after blending,the peculiarities of the bio-oil affect the chemistry of the resulting bio-binders,whereas no phase separation is observed from the microscopic *** addition,a Newtonian behaviour,an unchanged temperature susceptibility and a good fitting of 1 S2 P1 D model to the rheological data are found,regardless of the bio-oil percentage *** promising outcomes suggest that such bio-binders can be favourably employed for several applications in road pavements.

We estimated water-use efficiency and potential photosyn- thetic assimilation of Holm oak （Quercus ilex L.） on slopes of NW and SW aspects in a replicated field test examining the effects of intensifying drought in two Mediterranean coppice forests. We used standard tech- niques for quantifying gas exchange and carbon isotopes in leaves and analyzed total chlorophyll, carotenoids and nitrogen in leaves collected from Mediterranean forests managed under the coppice system. We pos- tulated that responses to drought of coppiced trees would lead to differ- ential responses in physiological traits and that these traits could be used by foresters to adapt to predicted warming and drying in the Mediterra- nean area. We observed physiological responses of the eoppiced trees that suggested acclimation in photosynthetic potential and water-use effi- ciency：（1） a significant reduction in stomatal conductance （p〈0.01） wasrecorded as the drought increased at the SW site; （2） foliar 813C increased as drought increased at the SW site （p〈0.01）; （3） variations in levels of carotenoids and foliar nitrogen, and differences in foliar morphology were recorded, and were tentatively attributed to variation in photosyn- thetic assimilation between sites. These findings increase knowledge of the capacity for acclimation of managed forests in the Mediterranean region of Europe.

The skill of ERA5 has been assessed in relation to the prediction of the wind energy associated with 28 SYNOP stations located in Italy for a time span of 20 years(2001–2020).For comparison,a WRF-based high-resolution downscaling(3 km horizontally)was also produced for the same *** found that simple predictions based on materialized past wind measures outperform the wind energy predictions from *** result can be ascribed to the particularly complex characteristics of the Italian *** by this expected behavior,we have implemented a Quantile Random Forest(QRF)calibration which greatly alleviates the problems encountered in the ERA5 reanalysis *** technique provides a calibrated ensemble prediction system for the wind speed at the ***,the calibrated ERA5 outperforms wind energy estimations from the high-resolution 3-km *** properly calibrated,the high-resolution downscaling provides predictions very similar to the calibrated *** our conclusions to the estimation of wind energy over a long time span(here 20 years),having at disposal a high-resolution wind-field dataset does not necessarily mean greater accuracy.A careful calibration of the original coarser wind-field dataset produces better results than the raw high-resolution dataset.
