Thermal Energy Storage Contribution to the Economic Dispatch of Island Power Systems

In this paper the provision of flexible generation is investigated by extracting steam from Rankine-cycle power stations during off-peak demand in order to charge thermal tanks that contain suitable phase-change materials(PCMs);at a later time when this is required and/or is economically effective,these thermal energy storage(TES)tanks can act as the heat sources of secondary thermal power plants in order to generate power,for example as evaporators of,e.g.,organic Rankine cycle(ORC)plants that are suitable for power generation at reduced temperatures and smaller scales.This type of solution offers greater flexibility than TES-only technologies that store thermal energy and release it back to the base power station,since it allows both derating but also over-generation compared to the base power-station capacity.The solution is applied in a case study of a 50-MW rated oil-fired power station unit at the autonomous system of Crete.The optimal operation of the TES system is investigated,by solving a modified Unit Commitment-Economic Dispatch optimization problem,which includes the TES operating constraints.The results indicate that for most of the scenarios the discounted payback period is lower than 12 years,while in few cases the payback period is 5 years.

Background The association between parental perception of child's weight and their attitudes towards his/her dietary habits has not been reported yet.This study aimed to assess the association between parental underestimation of child's weight and parental attitudes towards child's dietary habits.Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of SENDO cohort participants recruited between January 2015 and June 2020.All information was collected through online questionnaires completed by parents.We calculated crude and multivariable-adjusted odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence intervals(CI)for unhealthy attitudes towards child's dietary habits associated with parental underestimation of child's weight.Results Sixteen percent of children in the SENDO project had parents who underestimated their weight.Parents who under-estimated their child's weight status were more likely to have unhealthy attitudes toward his/her dietary habits[OR 3.35;95%CI(1.71-6.53)].Conclusions Parental underestimation of child's weight was associated with unhealthy attitudes towards child's dietary hab-its.Pediatricians and public health practitioners should pay attention to the parental perception of child's weight to identify parents who underestimate it as an at-risk group in which to inquire about lifestyle and dietary habits.

Porous titanium granules in critical size defects of rabbit tibia with or without membranes

Recently, porous titanium granules （PTGs） have been indicated for the preservation of the dimensions of post-extraction sockets, as a filler in sinus lift procedures and for the treatment of peri-implant and periodontal defects, based on the osteoconductivity and dimensional stability of the titanium granules. However, there is a lack of information regarding the use of this material in larger defects and in conjunction with membranes. The objective of this study is to test the behavior of PTGs used to fill critical size defects in rabbit tibiae, with and without membranes. Critical defects were created in both tibiae of rabbits, divided randomly into three groups： Group A （defect filled with PTG）, Group B （defect filled with PTG＋collagen membrane） and a control group （empty defect）. After six weeks, histomorphometric analysis was performed. The results showed more defect closures at the cortical area （87.37%±2.2%） and more bone formation at the marrow area （57.6%± 1.3%） in Group B, in comparison with the other groups （P〈0.05）; the use of membranes improved the material stability expressed as more percentages of the original material when membranes were used （P〈0.05）. Finally, inflammatory reactions were observed when the granules were not protected by membranes. In spite of the limitations of this animal study, it may be concluded that PTG particles are osteoconductive and allow bone growth. The PTG particles must be covered by a membrane, especially when grafting larger defects, in order to control particle migration, promote clot stabilization and separate the PTG graft from undesired soft tissue cells.

Percutaneous trans-hepatic bilateral biliary stenting in Bismuth Ⅳ malignant obstruction

AIM: To investigate the clinical efficiency of percutaneous trans-hepatic bilateral biliary metallic stenting for the management of Bismuth Ⅳ malignant obstructive disease. METHODS: Our hospital's database was searched for all patients suffering from the inoperable malignant biliary obstruction Bismuth Ⅳ, and treated with percutaneous bilateral trans-hepatic placement of selfexpandable nitinol stents. The indication for percutaneous stenting was an inoperable, malignant, symptomatic, biliary obstruction. An un-correctable coagulation disorder was the only absolute contra-indication for treatment. Bismuth grading was performed using magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. Computed tomography evaluation of the lesion and the dilatation status of the biliary tree was always performed prior to the procedure. All procedures were performed under conscious sedation. A single trans-hepatic track technique was preferred (T-configuration stenting) and a second, contra-lateral trans-hepatic track (Y-configuration stenting) was used only in cases of inability to access the contra-lateral lobe using a single track technique. The study's primary endpoints were clinical success, defined as a decrease in bilirubin levels within 10 d and patient survival rates. Secondary endpoints included peri-procedural complications, primary and secondary patency rates. RESULTS: A total of 35 patients (18 female, 51.4%) with a mean age 69 ± 13 years (range 33-88) were included in the study. The procedures were performed between March 2000 and June 2008 and mean time follow-up was 13.5 ± 22.0 mo (range 0-96). The underlying malignant disease was cholangiocarcinoma (n = 10), hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 9), pancreatic carcinoma (n = 5), gastric cancer (n = 2), bile duct tumor (n = 2), colorectal cancer (n = 2), gallbladder carcinoma (n = 2), lung cancer (n = 1), breast cancer (n = 1) or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 1). AIM:To assess the distribution of human leukocyteantigen(HLA)-DQ2 and-DQ8 in Iranian celiac disease(CD)patients and compare them to healthy Iranian controls.METHODS:To predict the HLA-DQA1 and-DQB1genes,we used six previously reported HLA-tagging single nucleotide polymorphism to determine HLA genotypes in 59 Iranian patients with‘biopsy-confirmed’CD and in 151 healthy Iranian individuals.To test the transferability of the method,50 cases and controls were also typed using a commercial kit that identifies individual carriers of DQ2,DQ7 and DQ8 alleles.RESULTS:In this pilot study 97%of CD cases(n=57)and 58%of controls(n=87)were carriers of HLADQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8 heterodimers,either in the homozygous or heterozygous state.The HLA-DQ pattern of these 57 CD patients:heterozygous DQ2.2(n=14)and homozygous DQ2.2(n=1),heterozygous DQ2.5(n=33)and homozygous DQ2.5(n=8),heterozygous DQ8(n=13)and homozygous DQ8(n=2).Two CD patients were negative for both DQ2 and DQ8(3%).CONCLUSION:The prevalence of DQ8 in our CD population was higher than that reported in other populations(25.4%).As reported in other populations,our results underline the primary importance of HLA-DQ alleles in the Iranian population’s susceptibility to CD.

应用2个或4个种植体支持的下颌全口义齿是目前口腔种植学的标准治疗方案。大多数种植系统可以采用包括经典的连接杆在内的多种固位连接方式。早在1979年就报道了一种方法，上部结构使用连接杆直接连接固定4个种植体，随后即刻负重。本文叙述的方法源于临床实践，即在颏孔间植入4个Ankylos种植体后即刻负重。但是义齿固位没有采用连接杆杆作为固位体，而是使用圆锥型冠固位。即外科手术后立即将预成的圆锥型外冠直接粘结在口内原有义齿的基托内。圆锥型外冠与圆锥形型基台精密嵌合，为义齿提供固位。如此制作的全口义齿戴入后．对4个种植体起到间接的夹持作用。

目的:牙槽嵴缺损常会使种植治疗方案复杂化。骨再生的方法有许多种,其中包括引导性骨再生(guided bone regeneration,GBR)。本研究的目的是对当前可获得的应用于种植前或种植同期GBR中的不同类型的膜的相关知识进行总结。膜的主要作用是阻止上皮细胞和结缔组织细胞进入需要再生的区域,创造和维持多能干细胞及成骨细胞可自由生长的空间。数据来源:对以该主题发表的英文文章进行文献检索。选择了一定数量的研究用以回顾不同类型膜的主要特征,应用和效果。可吸收膜由天然或合成的聚合物制成,如胶原蛋白和脂肪族聚酯。其中,最常使用的是胶原蛋白,它们与牙周结缔组织具有相似的胶原蛋白成分。其他可用的材料有人,猪和牛的心包膜,人羊膜和绒毛膜,以及人脱细胞冻干真皮基质。GBR中使用的不可吸收膜有致密聚四氟乙烯(dense-polytetrafluoroethylene,d-PTFE)膜,膨体聚四氟乙烯(expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene,e-PTFE)膜,钛网和钛加强聚四氟乙烯膜。结论:不可吸收膜最常见的并发症是膜暴露。对这两种类型的膜来说,膜暴露都会对最终骨再生效果产生不利影响。垂直骨增量宜采用不可吸收膜。对于复合骨缺损,两种类型的膜都可获得良好的效果。

Bacteroides fragilis Supernatant Extracts Enriched in Phenylacetic Acid Induce a Cytotoxic Effect in Mammalian Cells

Bacteroides species are nearly half of the fecal flora community and some are host symbionts crucial to host nutrition and systemic immunity. Among Bacteroides species B. fragilis strains are considered to be the opportunistic ones, being the most isolated anaerobic bacteria in clinical samples. Cell-free supernatants of 65 B. fragilis strains were assayed and they were capable of inducing vacuolating phenotype on Vero cells lineage. The supernatant of the Bacteroides fragilis ATCC 23745 strain was elicited to have the strongest vacuolating effect on Vero cells monolayers and peritoneal macrophages. Some drastic cell alterations were observed, such as a general disorganization of cytoplasm and chromatin condensation, evidencing cell death. By transmission electron microscopy it was confirmed that the vacuoles observed were, in fact, swollen mitochondria. An immunocytochemical assay, TUNEL, was used to confirm this hypothesis and showed that Vero cells and peritoneal macrophages were dying by apoptotic process after exposition of B. fragilis cell-free supernatant. Physical analysis of the apoptotic factor has revealed properties similar to short-chain fatty acids. After gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis, phenylacetic acid (PA) was characterized as the major compound present in the most purified active fraction. We believe that the PA is responsible for the pro-apoptotic effect elicited by the supernatant of B. fragilis cultures.
