In this paper we present a research-through-design study where we employed text-to-text,text-to-image,and image-to-image generative tools for a conceptual architecture project for the eVolo skyscraper *** trained these algorithms on a dataset that we collected and curated,consisting of texts about and images of *** describe our design process,present the final proposal,reflect on the usefulness of such tools for early-stage design,and discuss implications for future research and *** analysing the results from training the text-to-text generators we could establish a specific design brief that informed the final *** results from the image-to-image generator gave an overview of the shape grammars of previous *** results were intriguing and can assist creativity and in this way,the tools were useful for gaining insight into historical architectural data,helped shape a specific design brief,and provoked new *** reflecting on our design process,we argue that the use of language when employing such tools takes a new role and that three layers of language intertwined in our work:architectural discourse,programming languages,and *** present a map that unfolds how these layers came together as a contribution to making machine learning more explainable for creatives.

In situ conservation is widely considered a primary conservation strategy. Plant translocation, specifically, represents an important tool for reducing the extinction risk of threatened species. However, thus far, few documented translocations have been carried out in the Mediterranean islands. The CareMediflora project, carried out on six Mediterranean islands, tackles both short-and long-term needs for the insular endangered plants through in situ and ex situ conservation actions. The project approach is based on using ex situ activities as a tool to improve in situ conservation of threatened plant *** island plants(representing 45 taxa) were selected for translocations using common *** the translocations, several approaches were used, which differed in site selection method, origin of genetic material, type of propagative material, planting method, and more. Although only preliminary data are available, some general lessons can be learned from the experience of the CareMediflora project. Among the factors restricting the implementation of translocations, limited financial resources appear to be the most important. Specific preliminary management actions, sometimes to be reiterated after translocation, increase the overall cost, but often are necessary for translocation success. Translocation using juvenile/reproductive plants produces better results over the short term,although seeds may provide good results over the long run(to be assessed in the future). Regardless,plant translocation success can only be detected over long periods; therefore, proper evaluation of plant translocations requires a long-term monitoring protocol. Care-Mediflora project represents the first attempt to combine the existing approaches in a common plant conservation strategy specifically focusing on the Mediterranean islands.

Enhancement of endogenous midbrain neurogenesis by microneurotrophin BNN-20 after neural progenitor grafting in a mouse model of nigral degeneration

We have previously shown the neuroprotective and pro-neurogenic activity of microneurotrophin BNN-20 in the substantia nigra of the “weaver” mouse, a model of progressive nigrostriatal degeneration. Here, we extended our investigation in two clinically-relevant ways. First, we assessed the effects of BNN-20 on human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells and neurons derived from healthy and parkinsonian donors. Second, we assessed if BNN-20 can boost the outcome of mouse neural progenitor cell intranigral transplantations in weaver mice, at late stages of degeneration. We found that BNN-20 has limited direct effects on cultured human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells, marginally enhancing their differentiation towards neurons and partially reversing the pathological phenotype of dopaminergic neurons generated from parkinsonian donors. In agreement, we found no effects of BNN-20 on the mouse neural progenitor cells grafted in the substantia nigra of weaver mice. However, the graft strongly induced an endogenous neurogenic response throughout the midbrain, which was significantly enhanced by the administration of microneurotrophin BNN-20. Our results provide straightforward evidence of the existence of an endogenous midbrain neurogenic system that can be specifically strengthened by BNN-20. Interestingly, the lack of major similar activity on cultured human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitors and their progeny reveals the in vivo specificity of the aforementioned pro-neurogenic effect.

为准确获知花生贸易中商业批次的黄曲霉毒素水平,本研究通过模拟应用联合国粮食及农业组织(FAO)的农业品类真菌毒素取样模型,以脱壳整粒花生批次为模拟对象,在中国、日本法规限值下,分别设置实验室样品数目、实验室样品量和接受/拒绝限值,模拟每种组合超出法规限值的接收/放行概率。结果表明,在常规黄曲霉毒素风险的产季/产地下,批次能够满足>90%概率符合中国国标和日本法规的取样方案分别为:设置接受/拒绝限值为黄曲霉毒素B15~10 ng·g^(-1),实验室样品数目和样品量分别为2~3个、5~10 kg;设置接受/拒绝限值为黄曲霉毒素总量5 ng·g^(-1),实验室样品数目和样品量分别为3个、10 kg。推荐在以下3种高风险或风险不确定情景下应用此模型制订升级取样方案、调整接收限值、增强采购/销售信心:黄曲霉毒素高风险产季/产地采购;新开发的供应商/采购区域;批次超标预警时对新批次的放行,以免连续超标。本研究结果为中国花生加工/贸易企业提供了科学取样方案,进而为保障食品安全、保护企业经济利益提供了理论参考。

The potential of selected Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii wild-type and commercial strains to colonize andproduce carposomes after solid-state fermentation of five substrates constituted of agro-residues namely wheatstraw (WS), beech wood shavings (BWS), coffee residue (CR), barley and oats straw (BOS), rice bark (RB),supplemented with wheat bran was investigated. The effect of substrate composition on bioprocess feasibilitywas assessed for the different strains by quantitative (i.e., mushroom yield and Biological Efficiency-BE %) andcarposome qualitative parameters (i.e., weight, size, colour, firmness). P. ostreatus strains produced carposomesearlier than P. eryngii ones. Early fruiting formation was promoted in WS for P. ostreatus strains, whereas forP. eryngii the lowest values of earliness were observed on BOS substrate. As for crop productivity, P. ostreatusstrain AMRL 150 provided the highest BE (>70%) in all substrates except for RB, while P. ostreatus strain AMRL144 achieved the highest yield and BE in BOS and BWS (75.30 and 64.26%, respectively). P. eryngii stainsproduced less number but heavier carposomes. The highest values of BE% for these strains were recorded on WSand BOS substrates. The BE was further correlated to growth parameters of fungal vegetative phase. As formushroom colour, P. ostreatus were lighter than P. eryngii and BOS substrate promoted lightness in both *** P. ostreatus mushrooms were produced at CR. No differences in the whiteness and firmness were detectedamong P. eryngii mushrooms and at any substrate used. The data included in this paper showed that Pleurotusmushrooms can be cultivated on low- or zero-value agro-industrial residues of great financial and environmentalimportance towards the production of value-added food products.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)has emerged as the most common liver disorder worldwide mainly attributed to the epidemic spread of obesity and type 2 diabetes *** it is considered a benign disease,NAFLD can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis,liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Most data regarding the epidemiology of NAFLD-related HCC are derived from cohort and population studies and show that its incidence is increasing as well as it is likely to emerge as the leading indication for liver transplantation,especially in the Western *** cirrhosis constitutes the main risk factor for HCC development,in patients with NAFLD,HCC can arise in the absence of cirrhosis,indicating specific carcinogenic molecular *** NAFLD as an underlying liver disease for HCC is often underdiagnosed due to lack of sufficient surveillance in this population,NAFLDHCC patients are at advanced HCC stage at the time of diagnosis making the management of those patients clinically challenging and affecting their prognostic *** this current review,we summarize the latest literature on the epidemiology,other than liver cirrhosis-pathogenesis,risk factors and prognosis of NAFLD-HCC ***,we emphasize the prevention of the development of NAFLD-associated HCC and we provide some insight into the open questions and issues regarding the appropriate surveillance policies for those patients.

Adequate near and intermediate visual capacity is important in performing everyday tasks,especially after the introduction of smartphones and computers in our professional and recreational *** objective of this study was to review all available reading tests both conventional and digital and explore their integrated characteristics.A systematic review of the recent literature regarding reading charts was performed based on the PubM ed,Google Scholar,and Springer databases between February and March *** from 11 descriptive and 24 comparative studies were included in the present systematic *** settings are still dominated by conventional printed reading charts;however,the most prevalent of them(i.e.,Jaeger type charts)are not *** reading capacity assessment is done only by those that comply with the International Council of Ophthalmology(ICO)*** reading tests are gaining popularity both in clinical and research settings and are differentiated in standard computer-based applications that require installation either in a computer or a tablet(e.g.,Advanced VISION Test and web-based ones e.g.,Democritus Digital Acuity Reading Test requires no installation).It is evident that validated digital tests will prevail in future clinical or research settings and it is upon ophthalmologists to select the one most compatible with their examination routine.

The power conversion efficiencies(PCEs)of single-junction organic solar cells(OSCs)have surpassed 19%,owing to the emerging Y-series nonfullerene acceptors(NFAs).Undoubtedly,the power and flexibility of chemical design has been a strong driver for this rapid efficiency improvement in the OSC *** the course of the past 3 years,a variety of modifications have been made to the structure of the Y6 acceptor,and a large number of Y-series NFAs have been reported to further improve ***,we present our insights into the rationale behind the Y6 acceptor and discuss the design principles toward high-performance Y-series *** is clear that structural modifications through choice of heteroatom,soluble chains,πspacers,central cores,and end groups alter the material characteristics and properties,contributing to distinctive photovoltaic ***,we analyze various design strategies of Y-series-containing materials,including polymerized small-molecule acceptors(PSMA),non-fused-ring acceptors(NFRA),and all-fused-ring acceptors(AFRA).This review is expected to be of value in providing effective molecular design strategies for high-performance NFAs in future innovations.
