BACKGROUND A previous study compared vortexing and maki techniques for the diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream infection(CRBSI),and concluded that vortexing was not superior to maki *** To determine whether the combined use of vortexing and maki techniques provides profitability versus the maki technique for the diagnosis of catheter tip colonization(CTC)and *** Observational and prospective study carried out in an Intensive Care *** with suspected catheter-related infection(CRI)and with one central venous catheter for at least 7 days were *** area under the curve(AUC)of the maki technique,the vortexing technique and the combination of both techniques for the diagnosis of CTC and CRBSI were *** We included 136 episodes of suspected *** found 21 cases of CTC of which 10 were also CRBSI *** the 21 CTC episodes,18(85.7%)were diagnosed by maki technique and vortexing technique,3(14.3%)only by the technique of maki,and none only by technique of *** the 10 CRBSI episodes,9(90.0%)were diagnosed by the techniques of maki and vortexing,1(10.0%)was diagnosed only by the technique of maki,and none only by the technique of *** no found differences in the comparison of AUC between the technique of maki and the combination of maki and vortexing techniques for the diagnosis of CTC(P=0.99)and CRBSI(P=0.99).CONCLUSION The novel finding of our study was that the combined use of vortexing and maki techniques did not provide profitability to the technique of maki alone to CRBSI diagnosis of.

The effect of the consolidation process on the morphodynamics and fine sediment dynamics of the Río de la Plata estuary is explored through a circulation-wave-sediment transport model. The consolidation model is calibrated based on settling column experimental data. Different simulations are done in order to initialize the mud layer distribution and to investigate the impact of different erosion parameter assumptions on the modeled sediment dynamics. Finally a two-year simulation is done with and without the consolidation process and realistic hydrodynamic forcings. Considering the consolidation process, the model correctly reproduces measured vertical density profiles in the montevideo Bay access channel. The simulated suspended sediment dynamics behavior in montevideo Bay with the consolidation process provides a more realistic deposition pattern in regard to the dredging activities.

During vertebrate development,the immune function is inefficient and is mainly controlled by innate *** there have been detailed studies of various aspects of innate immune function,the effects of this function in the growth of vertebrates is still not well ***,there is little information regarding how early endotoxin exposure would affect juvenile phenotypes,specifically in a non-model mammal like a precocial *** evaluated the response to an antigen and its cost in offspring of the rodent Octodon *** inoculated pups at 4 different ages(8,15,22 and 30 days after birth)with an antigen to determine the ontogeny and costs of the response to an *** assessed changes in body mass,body temperature,sickness behavior and the levels of a key mediator of the inflammatory response,the cytokine interleukin-1β.We also determined the effects of early endotoxin exposure on the resting metabolic rate of juvenile animals(i.e.90 days after birth).The cytokine levels,body mass and body temperature were unaffected by time of inoculation and ***,pups subjected to inoculation at 22 days after birth with the antigen showed reduced loco*** resting metabolic rate was not affected by early endotoxin *** results suggest that the magnitude of *** responses would not change with *** discuss whether the lack of effect of the response on body mass or body condition is caused by environmental variables or by the precocial characteristics of ***.

We report on an experiment performed at the FLASH2 free-electron laser(FEL)aimed at producing warm dense matter via soft x-ray isochoric *** the experiment,we focus on study of the ions emitted during the soft x-ray ablation process using time-of-flight electron multipliers and a shifted maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution *** find that most emitted ions are thermal,but that some impurities chemisorbed on the target surface,such as protons,are accelerated by the electrostatic field created in the plasma by escaped *** morphology of the complex crater structure indicates the presence of several ion groups with varying *** find that the ion sound velocity is controlled by the ion temperature and show how the ion yield depends on the FEL radiation attenuation length in different materials.

The role of the most common land iguana(Conolophus subcristatus)in the Galápagos Islands as an effective seed disperser is explored in this study.A total of 5705 seeds of 32 plant species were identified from 160 scats,4545 of which(80%)appeared visually *** trials of 849 seeds from 29 species revealed that at least 10 species remained viable after passing through the iguana’s gut,although only a small proportion of those seeds(4%)*** any case,we argue that *** exerts an important role on the 7 Galapagos islands where it occurs because of its abundance and capacity to ingest and disperse seeds at long *** results strongly suggest that the Galápagos *** plays an important role as a seed disperser of not only of native species but also some introduced plants in the Galápagos Islands.
