chemiluminescence detection was developed as an alternative to amperometric detection for glucose analysis in a portable, microfluidicsbased continuous glucose monitoring system. Amperometric detection allows easy determination of hydrogen peroxide, a product of the glucose oxidasecatalyzed reaction of glucose with oxygen, by oxidation at a microelectrode. However, （micro）electrodes in direct contact with physiological sample are subject to electrode fouling, which leads to signal drift, decreased reproducibility and shortened detector lifetimes. Moreover, there are a few species present in the body （e.g. ascorbic acid, uric acid） which can undergo oxidation at the same applied potential as hydrogen peroxide. These species can thus inter- fere with the glucose measurement, reducing detection specificity. The rationale for exploring chemiluminescence as opposed to amperometric detection is thus to attempt to improve the lifetime and reproducibility of glucose analysis for monitoring purposes, while reducing interference caused by other chemicals in the body. The study reported here represents a first step in this direction, namely the realization of a microfluidic device with integrated silicon photodiode for chemiluminescence detection of glucose. This microflow device uses a chaotic mixing approach to perform enzymatic conversion of glucose, followed by reaction of the hydrogen peroxide produced with luminol to produce light at 425 nm. The chemil reaction is catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase in the presence of iodophenol. The performance of the fabricated chip was characterized to establish optimal reaction conditions with respect to sample and reagent flow rates, pH, and concentrations. A linear calibra- tion curve was obtained for current response as a function of glucose concentration in the clinically relevant range between 2 and 10 mM, with a sensitivity of 39 pa/mM （R = 0.9963, one device, n = 3） and a limit of detection of 230 ktM （s/N - 3）.

Myxomycete colonization on translocated and non-translocated dead leaves from temperate and tropical forests

samples of dead leaves on the forest floor were collected from a locality in central costa Rica and another locality in northwest Arkansas in the United states and then were placed in fine-mesh nylon bags,autoclaved and left out in the field for four *** of the bags prepared with sterile material from each country were placed out in the country where they were collected,and the other half were placed in the other country.A characterization of forest structure and ground leaf chemistry was carried out for both localities and both leaf *** recollected,all samples were processed for myxomycetes with the use of the moist chamber culture *** cultures yielded a total of 156 records of myxomycetes representing 16 species,but only 13 records and six species were isolated from the samples left out in costa *** hundred percent of cultures placed out in Arkansas produced myxomycetes,whereas only 68%of those placed out in costa Rica were positive for these *** in species richness and number of records were observed across forests where the samples were placed out,and no differences were observed based on the origin of the *** suggested that myxomycete colonization in the studied areas is primarily affected by the dynamics of the forest type and secondarily by substrate *** myxomycete species recorded on leaves with poorer chemical values are also consistent with field *** the present study,the more open character of the temperate forest in Arkansas without a film of water layer covering the leaves on the ground seemed to have played a role in the establishment of myxomycete propagules in the sterile material during the time of the investigation.

background:skeletal muscle energetics decline with age,and physical activity(pa)has been shown to offset these declines in older ***,many studies reporting these effects were based on self-reported pa or structured exercise ***,we examined the associations of accelerometry-measured and self-reported pa and sedentary behavior(sb)with skeletal muscle energetics and explored the extent to which pa and sedentary behavior would attenuate the associations of age with muscle ***:As part of the study of Muscle,Mobility and Aging,enrolled older adults(n=879),810(age=76.4±5.0 years old,mean±sD;58%women)had maximal muscle oxidative capacity measured ex vivo via high-resolution re spirometry of permeabilized myofibers(maximal oxidative phosphorylation(maxOXPHOs))and in vivo by ^(31)phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy(maximal adenosine triphosphate(ATP_(max))).Accelerometry-measured sedentary behavior,light activity,and moderate-to-vigorous pa(MVpa)were assessed using a wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X over 7 ***-reported sedentary behavior,MVpa,and all pa were assessed with the community Healthy Activities Model Program for seniors(cHAMPs)*** regression models with progressive covariate adjustments evaluated the associations of sedentary behavior and pa with muscle energetics,as well as the attenuation of the age/muscle energetics association by MVP A and sedentary *** a sensitivity analysis,we also examined activpaL-measured daily step count and time spent in sedentary behavior and their associations with muscle ***:Every 30 min/day more of ActiGraph-measured MVpa was associated with 0.65 pmol/(s×mg)higher maxOXPHOs and 0.012 mM/s higher ATP_(max)after adjusting for age,site/technician,and sex(pctivity was not associated with maxOXPHOs or ATP_(max).Meanwhile,every 30 min/day spent in ActiGraph-measured sedentary behavior was associated with 0.39 pmol/s×mg lower maxOXPHOs and0.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron collider,as standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAs collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAs *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

A multifaceted approach towards understanding the peculiar behavior of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates

The peculiar isomer-selective reduction of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates(oxime isomers)into(α)-hydroxyaminophosphonate(hydroxylamine)derivatives is presented.A library of 16(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates is prepared and studied via a unique multifaceted approach involving the interplay of NMR,XRD,Ms,IM-Ms and computational chemistry *** combination of NMR,XRD and HPLc enables the seamless separation,identification and quantification of the oxime isomers(E/Z).Tandem Ms(Ms/Ms)enables the determination of the fragmentation patterns for both *** energy breakdown curves highlight the order of apparition of the fragments as well as their related energy of fragmentation,demonstrating that the strength of the c–P bond in the Z isomers is much weaker than in the E *** chemistry demonstrates that favorable protonation site is isomer-dependent with the phosphonate moiety being the favorable protonation site for the E isomers,while protonation occurs preferentially on the amino moiety for Z isomers regardless of the phosphite *** combination of these various methods led an unprecedented level of characterization of oxime isomers,providing a better uderstanding of the isomer-dependent behavior of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates.

Many animals use color to signal their quality and/or behavioral *** signals have been well studied in the contexts of competi-tion and mate choice;however,the role of these signals in nonsexual,affiliative relationships is not as well ***,we used wild social groups of the cichlid fish Neolamprologus pulcher to investigate whether the size of a brightly colored facial patch was related to 1)individual quality,2)social dominance,and/or 3)affiliative *** with larger patches spent more time foraging and tended to perform more aggressive acts against conspecific territory *** did not find any evidence that the size of these yellow patches was related to social rank or body size,but dominant males tended to have larger patches than dominant ***,patch size had a rank-specific relationship with the number of affiliative interactions that individuals engaged *** males with large patches received fewer affiliative acts from their groupmates compared to dominant males with small ***,subordinates with large patches tended to receive more affiliative acts from their groupmates while performing fewer affiliative acts *** together,our results suggest that patch size reflects interindividual variation in foraging effort in this cichlid fish and offer some of the first evidence that colorful signals may shape affiliative relationships withinwildsocialgroups.
