A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATcc *** production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase VrcA and the cytochrome P450 ***,the replacement of Vrcb with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic *** study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

Artificial neural network approach for rheological characteristics of coal-water slurry using microwave pre-treatment

detailed experimental investigations were carried out for microwave pre-treatment of high ash Indian coal at high power level(900 W) in microwave oven. The microwave exposure times were fixed at60 s and 120 s. A rheology characteristic for microwave pre-treatment of coal-water slurry(cWs) was performed in an online bohlin viscometer. The non-Newtonian character of the slurry follows the rheological model of Ostwald de Waele. The values of n and k vary from 0.31 to 0.64 and 0.19 to 0.81 pa·sn,respectively. This paper presents an artificial neural network(ANN) model to predict the effects of operational parameters on apparent viscosity of cWs. A 4-2-1 topology with Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm(trainlm) was selected as the controlled ANN. Mean squared error(MsE) of 0.002 and coefficient of multiple determinations(R^2) of 0.99 were obtained for the outperforming model. The promising values of correlation coefficient further confirm the robustness and satisfactory performance of the proposed ANN model.

The use of plant extracts as antifungal agents is gaining increasing attention, particularly for the control of black pod disease in cocoa. despite extensive research, current strategies haven’t been entirely effective. This study evaluated the effectiveness of cymbopogon citratus and blumea balsamifora leaf extracts, both individually and in combination, against Phytophthora megakarya. We assessed the efficacy of the most promising combination (75% b. balsamifera, 25% c. citratus) after storage at room temperature for up to 9 days. Agar microdilution and in vivo bioassays were conducted to determine antifungal susceptibility and effectiveness. blumea extract exhibited the highest overall inhibitory activity, with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (117 µl mL−1) while c. citratus had a narrower range of MIc (146 to 233 µl mL−1). The combination of c. citratus and b. balsamifera demonstrated a synergistic effect against P. megakarya, achieving growth inhibition on V8 media (92.72 ± 4.20% to 100%) and on artificially infected detached pod cortex (92.24 ± 4.53% to 98.75 ± 1.25%), which was not significantly different from the positive control (Ridomil). Furthermore, this combination maintained its effectiveness for up to 9 days at room temperature. These findings suggest that combining plant extracts can enhance their antifungal properties.

The size effects of the critical behaviors for the systems of interacting spins are discussed extensively *** this paper,the finite-size dependence of the critical temperature and susceptibility of the ferroelectric thinfilm are investigated numerically based on the four-state Potts model with the nearest-neighbor interactions between thedipole *** four orientations of the domains exist in the ferroelectric film and the movement of the domainwalls determines the polarization switching process besides the boundary conditions of the *** critical exponentsare obtained and our investigations show that the boundary conditions play the important roles for the ferroelectricproperties of the thin films and the critical behavior of the thin films strongly depends on the feature of the surface.

The bending of light ray and unphysical solutions in general relativity

In general relativity, according to Einstein, a gauge is related to the time dilation and the space contractions and thus a physically realizable gauge should be unique for a given frame of reference. since more than one metric solution for the same frame can produce the same deflection angle, 2000this means that an invalid space–time metric can produce the correct deflection angle for a light ray. To demonstrate this with an unambiguous example, we consider a new extreme case that there is no space contraction in the radius direction while the conditions of asymptotic flatness and the requirement for gravitational red shifts are satisfied. This solution has a distinct characteristic of ``space expansion'' in the other directions. Nevertheless, it turns out that, in spite of requiring far more subtle calculations, the resulting deflection angle of a light ray is the same. An interesting property of this new solution is that its event horizon corresponds to an arbitrary integral constant. Thus, this calculation demonstrates beyond doubt that an unphysical solution can produce the correct first-order approximation of light bending. This makes it clear that there is a main difference between local effects such as the gravitational red shifts and the local light speeds, which are not gauge invariant and integrated effects such as the bending of light, which can be (restricted) gauge invariant.

Effect of viscous dissipation and heat source on flow and heat transfer of dusty fluid over unsteady stretching sheet

This paper investigates the problem of hydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a dusty fluid over an unsteady stretching surface. The study considers the effects of frictional heating （viscous dissipation） and internal heat generation or ab- sorption. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are reduced to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity transformations. The transformed equations are numerically solved by the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg-45 order method. An analysis is carried out for two different cases of heating processes, namely, variable wall temperature （VWT） and variable heat flux （VHF）. The effects of various physical parameters such as the magnetic parameter, the fluid-particle interaction pa- rameter, the unsteady parameter, the Prandtl number, the Eckert number, the number density of dust particles, and the heat source/sink parameter on velocity and temperature profiles are shown in several plots. The effects of the wall temperature gradient function and the wall temperature function are tabulated and discussed.
