Axonal regeneration follow.ng surgical nerve repair is slow.and often incomplete,resulting in poor functional recovery w.ich sometimes contributes to lifelong ***,there are no FDA-approved therapies available to promote nerve *** accelerates axonal regeneration,but systemic side effects presently outw.igh its potential benefits for peripheral nerve *** authors describe herein a biodegradable polyurethane-based drug delivery system for the sustained local release of tacrolimus at the nerve repair site,w.th suitable properties for scalable production and clinical application,aiming to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery w.th minimal systemic drug *** is encapsulated into co-axially electrospun polycarbonate-urethane nanofibers to generate an implantable nerve w.ap that releases therapeutic doses of bioactive tacrolimus over 31 *** and drug loading are adjustable for applications in small and large caliber nerves,and the w.ap degrades w.thin 120 days into biocompatible *** released from the nerve w.ap promotes axon elongation in vitro and accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in preclinical nerve repair models w.ile off-target systemic drug exposure is reduced by 80%compared w.th systemic *** its surgical suitability and preclinical efficacy and safety,this system may provide a readily translatable approach to support axonal regeneration and recovery in patients undergoing nerve surgery.

DEM prediction of industrial and geophysical particle flow.

Simulation of industrial particle flow. using DEM （Discrete Element Method） offers the opportunity for better understanding of the flow.dynamics by the inclusion of particle scale physics that often determine the nature of these flow.. Increased understanding from the models can lead to improvements in equip- ment design and operation, potentially leading to large increases in equipment and process efficiency, throughput and]or product quality. Industrial applications are typically large and involve complex par- ticulate behaviour in complex geometries. Assessing mixing characteristics of particle-mixing and granulation devices

The mixing of particulates such as pow.ers is an important process in many industries including pharmaceuticals, plastics, household products （such as detergents） and food processing. The quality of products depends on the degree of mixing of their constituent materials w.ich in turn depends on both geometric design and operating conditions. Unfortunately, due to lack of understanding of the interaction betw.en mixer geometry and the granular material, limited progress has been made in optimizing mixer design. The discrete element method （DEM） is a computational technique that allow. particle systems to be simulated and mixing to be predicted. Simulation is an effective w.y of acquiring information on the performance of different mixers that is difficult and/or expensive to obtain using traditional experimental approaches. Here w. demonstrate how.DEM can be used to unravel flow.dynamics and assess mixing in several different types of devices. These devices used for mixing and/or granulation of particulates, are classified broadly as gravity controlled, bladed and high shear. w. also explore the role of particle shape in mixing performance and use DEM to test w.ether Froude number scaling is suitable for predicting scale performance of rotating mixers.

Robust H_∞ control for aseismic structures w.th uncertainties in model parameters

This paper presents a robust H∞ output feedback control approach for structural systems w.th uncertainties in model parameters by using available acceleration measurements and proposes conditions for the existence of such a robust output feedback controller. The uncertainties of structural stiffness, damping and mass parameters are assumed to be norm-bounded. The proposed control approach is formulated w.thin the framew.rk of linear matrix inequalities, for w.ich existing convex optimization techniques, such as the LM1 toolbox in MATLAB, can be used effectively and conveniently. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust H∞ strategy, a six-story building w.s subjected both to the 1940 E1 Centro earthquake record and to a suddenly applied Kanai-Tajimi filtered w.ite noise random excitation. The results show.that the proposed robust H∞ controller provides satisfactory results w.th or w.thout variation of the structural stiffness, damping and mass parameters.

Purpose: The purpose of this study w.s to compare shock attenuation, spatio-temporal and physiological parameters during w.ter immersed(depth: anterior superior iliac spine) aquatic treadmill(ATM) running and land based treadmill(LTM) running matched for ***: Six participants completed 15 min running under 2 conditions(LTM and ATM) in a randomised and balanced order, matched for *** tri-axial accelerometers placed at the distal tibia, lumbar region, and forehead w.re used to identify running dynamics and measure acceleration on impact and its attenuation. Expired respiratory gases and heart rate w.re sampled on a breath-by-breath basis for physiological variable collection throughout each ***: Participants experienced reduced accelerations on impact at the distal tibia(p w.r back(p = 0.1363) or forehead(p = 0.0551) during ATM compared to LTM. Consequently, large reductions in shock attenuation occurred during the ATM compared to LTM(p = 0.0001). Stride frequency w.s greater(p w.s shorter(p = 0.0341) as a result of reduced sw.ng time(p = 0.0201)for LTM, w.ilst ATM running increased physiological demand for both heart rate(p w.ATM reduces impact stress on the passive structures of the low.r limbs w.ilst increasing physiological demand w.en running at matched speeds.

Evaluation of fall armyw.rm resistance in maize germplasm lines using visual leaf injury rating and predator survey

After examining ear-colonizing pest resistance, 20 maize lines from the USDA- ARS Germplasm Enhancement of Maize （GEM） Program w.re evaluated for w.orl-feeding fall armyw.rm （FAw. （Spodopterafrugiperda） resistance using 4 maize inbred lines as the resistant and susceptible controls. Both FAw.injury ratings at 7- and 14-d after infestation, and predator abundance and diversity at w.orl stage （V6-V8） w.re recorded in 2009 and 2010. The survey of the diversity and abundance of predators in each experimental plot w.re conducted 7 d after the FAw.infestation. Of the 20 germplasm lines examined, 3 of them （i.e., entries 9, 15, and 19 that w.re derived from tropical maize germplasm lines w.re originated from Uruguay, Cuba, and Thailand, respectively） w.re identified as the best FAw.resistant germplasm lines using the leaf injury ratings and predator survey data. In addition, the abundance and diversity of the predators w.re greater in 2010 than in 2009, w.ich might have caused the low.level of the FAw.injury ratings on all lines examined in 2010. The 2-year data show.d that the FAw.injury ratings w.re negatively correlated to the predator abundance and diversity, w.ich is also influence by genotype × environment interactions. The findings suggested that tropical germplasm is an important source of native resistance to the FAw.and the corn earw.rm. At the same time, the maize genotype x environment interaction （e.g., predator attractiveness, and varying w.ather conditions） should be included in the multiple-year evaluations of insect and disease resistance of maize germplasm lines under field conditions.

Recent research has clarified the sequence of ground deformation mechanisms that manifest themselves w.en excavations are made in soft ground. Furthermore, a new.framew.rk to describe the deformability of clays in the w.rking stress range has been devised using a large database of previously published soil tests. This paper aims to capitalize on these advances, by analyzing an expanded database of ground movements associated w.th braced excavations in Shanghai. It is show. that conventional design charts fail to take account either of the characteristics of soil deformability or the relevant deformation mechanisms, and therefore introduce significant scatter. A new.method of presentation is found w.ich provides a set of design charts that clarify the influence of soil deformability, w.ll stiffness, and the geometry of the excavation in relation to the depth of soft ground.

By extending the Levy w.vefunction constrained search to Fock Space,one can define a w.vefunction constrained search for electron densities in systems having noninteger number of *** pure-state v-representable densities,the results are equivalent to w.at one w.uld obtain w.th the zero-temperature grand canonical *** other cases,the w.vefunction constrained search in Fock space presents an upper bound to the grand canonical ensemble *** advantage of the Fock-space w.vefunction constrained search functional over the zero-temperature grand-canonical ensemble constrained search functional is that certain specific excited states(i.e.,those that are not ground-statev-representable) are the stationary points of the Fock-space ***,a potential disadvantage of the Fock-space constrained search functional is that it is not convex.

Ecological monophagy in Tasmanian Graphium macleayanum moggana w.th evolutionary reflections of ancient angiosperm hosts

Local host plant specialization in an insect herbivore may be caused by numerous factors, including host-specific natural enemy pressures or a local lack of suitable host-plant choices that are available elsew.ere in its range. Such local specialization or ＂ecological monophagy＇, for w.atever reason, may reflect reduced ability to behaviourally accept or physiologically utilize other allopatric hosts that are naturally used elsew.ere by the species. w. tested this feeding specialization hypothesis using the Tasmanian subspecies of Macleay＇s sw.llow.ail butterfly, Graphium macleayanum moggana （Papilionidae）, w.ich uses only a single host-plant species, Antherosperma moschatum （southern sassafras, of the Monlmiaceae）. Further north, this same butterfly species （G. m. macleayanum） uses at least 13 host-plant species from seven genera and four families （Lauraceae, Rutaceae, w.nteraceae, and Monlmiaceae）. Our larval feeding assays w.th G. m. moggana from Tasmania show.d that certain Magnoliaceae and Lauraceae could support some larval grow.h to pupation. How.ver, such grow.h w.s slow.r and survival w.s low.r than observed on their normal southern sassafras host （Monimiaceae）. w. also found that toxicity of particular plant species varied tremendously w.thin plant families （for both the Magnoliceae and the Monlmiaceae）.
