Model development to estimate site index values for six major tree species in North Korea

Due to considerable deforestation in North Korea,there is a need to plan forest restoration programs based on scientific forest *** this study,a methodology was developed for estimating the site index values of six major tree species and the forest productivity *** site index values of these tree species were derived in South Korea using the Chapman-Richards *** values were used with data from the 6th National Forest Inventory,which included 20 types of edaphic,topographic,and climatic factors,and random forest analysis—a widely used machine learning technique for spatial prediction—to develop a new model for estimating the site index values of these species across South *** prediction accuracy of this model was evaluated using the root mean square *** results show that the prediction accuracy was high,with a root mean square error of~***,the importance of the variables related to climate and geography was generally *** proposed site index estimation model for six tree species was applied across North Korea,and its effectiveness tested by comparing the estimated values with those reported in literature from North *** differences between the model outputs and recorded data in the northern alpine regions were presumably due to the lack of data for high-altitude regions in South *** model is based on the determination of the suitability of tree species in restoration ***,it can contribute to the evaluation of forest productivity in North Korea and may help plan efficient forest restoration programs.

Association between metabolic syndrome and agerelated cataract

·AIM: To determine the effect of metabolic syndrome on age-related cataract formation.·METHODS: We analyzed data for 2852 subjects [41.8%men and 58.2% women; mean(±SD) age, 52.9 ±13.9y],taken from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed by criteria proposed by the Joint Interim Societies. Cataract was diagnosed by using the Lens Opacities Classification System III. The association between metabolic syndrome and cataract was determined using age-adjusted and multivariable logistic regression analyses.· RESULTS: In multivariable analyses, men with metabolic syndrome had a 64% increased risk of nuclear cataract [odds ratio(OR), 1.64; 95% confidence interval(CI), 1.12-2.39]. Women with metabolic syndrome had a56% increased risk of cortical cataract(OR, 1.56; 95% CI,1.06-2.30). Men and women with metabolic syndrome had a 46%(OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.01-2.12) and 49%(OR,1.49; 95% CI, 1.07-2.08) increased risk of any cataract,respectively. The prevalence of nuclear and any cataract significantly increased with an increasing number of disturbed metabolic components in men, and prevalence of all types of cataracts increased in women. Men using hypoglycemic medication had an increased risk of nuclear(OR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.41-4.86) and any(OR, 2.27;95% CI, 1.14-4.51) cataract, and women using antidyslipidemia medication had an increased risk of cortical(OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.12-4.24) and any(OR, 2.21;95% CI, 1.14-4.26) cataract.·CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome and its components,such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, andimpaired fasting glucose, are associated with age-related cataract formation in the Korean population.

Precise control of surface oxygen vacancies in ZnO nanoparticles for extremely high acetone sensing response

ZnO has been studied intensely for chemical sensors due to its high sensitivity and fast ***,we present a simple approach to precisely control oxygen vacancy contents to provide significantly enhanced acetone sensing performance of commercial ZnO nanopowders.A combination of H_(2)O_(2)treatment and thermal annealing produces optimal surface defects with oxygen vacancies on the ZnO nanoparticles(NPs).The highest response of~27,562 was achieved for 10 ppm acetone in 0.125 MH_(2)O_(2)treated/annealed ZnO NPs at the optimal working temperature of 400℃,which is significantly higher than that of reported so far in various acetone sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors(MOSs).Furthermore,first-principles calculations indicate that pre-adsorbed O formed on the surface of H_(2)O_(2)treated ZnO NPs can provide favorable adsorption energy,especially for acetone detection,due to strong bidentate bonding between carbonyl C atom of acetone molecules and pre-adsorbed O on the ZnO *** study demonstrates that controlling surface oxygen vacancies by H_(2)O_(2)treatment and re-annealing at optimal temperature is an effective method to improve the sensing properties of commercial MOS materials.

PotholeEye^(+): Deep-Learning Based Pavement Distress Detection System toward Smart Maintenance

We propose a mobile system,called PotholeEye+,for automatically monitoring the surface of a roadway and detecting the pavement distress in real-time through analysis of a ***+pre-processes the images,extracts features,and classifies the distress into a variety of types,while the road manager is *** day for a year,we have tested PotholeEye+on real highway involving real settings,a camera,a mini computer,a GPS receiver,and so ***,PotholeEye+detected the pavement distress with accuracy of 92%,precision of 87%and recall 74%averagely during driving at an average speed of 110 km/h on a real highway.

Oral antiviral agents have been developed in the last two decades for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B(CHB).However,antiviral resistance remains an important challenge for long-term CHB *** of the clinically available oral antiviral agents are nucleoside or nucleotide analogues that target the activity of viral reverse transcriptase(RT),and all are reported to have resistant *** the hepatitis B virus(HBV)RT,like other viral polymerases,lacks proofreading activity,the emergence of drug-resistance occurs readily under selective pressure from the administration of antiviral *** molecular diagnosis of drug-resistant HBV is based on sequence variations,and current diagnostic methods include sequencing,restriction fragment polymorphism analysis,and ***,we will discuss the currently available molecular diagnosis tools,in vitro phenotypic assays for validation of drug-resistant HBV,and treatment options for drug-resistant HBV.

Retrieval of Outgoing Longwave Radiation from COMS Narrowband Infrared Imagery

Hourly outgoing longwave radiation （OLR） from the geostationary satellite Communication Oceanography Meteorological Satellite （COMS） has been retrieved since June *** COMS OLR retrieval algorithms are based on regression analyses of radiative transfer simulations for spectral functions of COMS infrared *** study documents the accuracies of OLRs for future climate applications by making an intercomparison of four OLRs from one single-channel algorithm （OLR12.0 using the 12.0 μm channel） and three multiple-channel algorithms （OLR10.8＋12.0 using the 10.8 and 12.0 pm channels; OLR6.7＋10.8 using the 6.7 and 10.8 μm channels; and OLRAll using the 6.7,10.8,and 12.0 μm channels）.The COMS OLRs from these algorithms were validated with direct measurements of OLR from a broadband radiometer of the Clouds and Earth＇s Radiant Energy System （CERES） over the full COMS field of view [roughly （50°S-50°N,70°-170°E）] during April *** results show that the root-mean-square errors of COMS OLRs are 5-7 W m-2,which indicates good agreement with CERES OLR over the vast ***6.7＋10.8 and OLRAll have much smaller errors （～ 6 W m-2） than OLR12.0 and OLR10.8＋12.0 （～ 8 W m-2）.Moreover,the small errors of OLR6.7＋10.8 and OLRAll are systematic and can be readily reduced through additional mean bias correction and/or radiance *** results indicate a noteworthy role of the 6.7 μm water vapor absorption channel in improving the accuracy of the *** dependence of the accuracy of COMS OLRs on various surface,atmospheric,and observational conditions is also discussed.

Role of Arabidopsis RAP2.4 in Regulating Light-and Ethylene-Mediated Developmental Processes and Drought Stress Tolerance

Light and the plant hormone ethylene regulate many aspects of plant growth and development in an overlapping and interdependent fashion. Little is known regarding how their signal transduction pathways cross-talk to regulate plant development in a coordinated manner. Here, we report functional characterization of an AP2/DREB-type transcription factor, Arabidopsis RAP2.4, in mediating light and ethylene signaling. Expression of the RAP2.4 gene is down-regulated by light but up-regulated by salt and drought stresses. RAP2.4 protein is constitutively targeted to the nucleus and it can bind to both the ethylene-responsive GCC-box and the dehydration-responsive element （DRE）. We show that RAP2.4 protein possesses an intrinsic transcriptional activation activity in yeast cells and that it can activate a reporter gene driven by the DRE cis-element in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Overexpression of RAP2.4 or mutation in RAP2.4 cause altered expression of representative light-, ethylene-, and drought-responsive genes. Although no salient phenotype was observed with a rap2.4 loss-of-function mutant, constitutive overexpression of RAP2.4 results in defects in multiple developmental processes regulated by light and ethylene, including hypocotyl elongation and gravitropism, apical hook formation and cotyledon expansion, flowering time, root elongation, root hair formation, and drought tolerance. Based on these observations, we propose that RAP2.4 acts at or downstream of a converging point of light and ethylene signaling pathways to coordinately regulate multiple developmental processes and stress responses.

Difference in extrusion temperature dependences of microstructure and mechanical properties between extruded AZ61 and AZ91 alloys

The effects of extrusion temperature on the microstructure and tensile properties of extruded AZ61 and AZ91 alloys are investigated by subjecting them to hot extrusion at 300 and 400℃.Although the average grain size of the extruded AZ61 alloy slightly increases from 9.5 to 12.6μm with increasing extrusion temperature,its resultant microstructural variation is *** contrast,the average grain size of the extruded AZ91 alloy significantly increases from 5.7 to 22.5μm with increasing extrusion temperature,and the type of Mg17Al12 precipitates formed in it changes from fine dynamic precipitates with a spherical shape to coarse static precipitates with a lamellar *** the extrusion temperature increases,the tensile yield strength of the extruded AZ61 alloy increases from 183 to 197 MPa while that of the extruded AZ91 alloy decreases from 232 to 224 *** tensile elongations of the extruded AZ61 and AZ91 alloys decrease with increasing extrusion temperature,but the degree of decrease is significant in the latter *** different extrusion temperature dependences of the tensile properties of the extruded AZ61 and AZ91 alloys are discussed in terms of their microstructural characteristics,strengthening mechanisms,and crack initiation sites.
