A mathematical model to assess the impact of testing and isolation compliance on the transmission of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged global health and national economies *** and isolation are effective control strategies to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19,especially in the early stage of the disease *** this paper,we develop a deterministic model to investigate the impact of testing and compliance with isolation on the transmission of *** derive the control reproduction number R_(C),which gives the threshold for disease elimination or *** data from New York State in the early stage of the disease outbreak,we estimate R_(C)=7:*** elasticity and sensitivity analyses show that testing and compliance with isolation are significant in reducing R_(C) and disease *** reveals that only high testing volume combined with a large proportion of individuals complying with isolation have great impact on mitigating the *** testing starting date is also crucial:the earlier testing is implemented,the more impact it has on reducing the *** results obtained here would also be helpful in developing guidelines of early control strategies for pandemics similar to COVID-19.

The reproductive biology of a Central American cichlid Neetroplus nematopus in Lake Xiloá ,Nicaragua

This study was conducted to provide a five-year database on the breeding seasonality and breeding biology of a Central American cichlid fish Neetroplus nematopus, a biparental substratum-spawning cichlid that cares for its eggs, wrigglers, and fry for up to six weeks. A total of 503 breeding pairs were monitored for breeding success. Breeding pairs of N. nematopus are sexually dimorphic in size, with females averaging 39% of male body mass. Fry emerged from 85% of nesting cavities. After three weeks, only 30% of the broods were present in the nesting cavity; these broods had a 30% survival rate, giving a 9% overall survival rate. Nineteen percent of the successful parents with three-week-old broods adopted foreign fry. A consistent unimodal breeding peak in December was observed for five years. This breeding peak differed dramatically from the bimodal breeding season 20 years found in the 1970s. The effects of extensive grenade fishing practices during the 1980s might have played a substantial role in the observed change. Grenade fishing stopped in 1991, and the number ofN. nematopus pairs increased by 136% from 1990 to 1995. With increased density of breeding fish, the breeding season for this species also expanded. The balance between divergent selection due to competition for breeding sites and stabilizing selection due to predation pressure on offspring is likely to mold the breeding season for N. nematopus and other cichlids of Lake Xilofi. We suggest that brood adoption and synchrony of breeding is a strategy to reduce predation on the parent＇s own young [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 43-51 2010].

This primer article focuses on the basic reproduction number,ℛ0,for infectious diseases,and other reproduction numbers related toℛ0 that are useful in guiding control *** with a simple population model,the concept is developed for a threshold value ofℛ0 determining whether or not the disease dies *** next generation matrix method of calculatingℛ0 in a compartmental model is described and *** address control strategies,type and target reproduction numbers are defined,as well as sensitivity and elasticity *** theoretical ideas are then applied to models that are formulated for West Nile virus in birds(a vector-borne disease),cholera in humans(a disease with two transmission pathways),anthrax in animals(a disease that can be spread by dead carcasses and spores),and Zika in humans(spread by mosquitoes and sexual contacts).Some parameter values from literature data are used to illustrate the ***,references for other ways to calculateℛ0 are *** are useful for more complicated models that,for example,take account of variations in environmental fluctuation or stochasticity.

Qualifying the suitability of living donor livers for pediatric liver transplantation:are we doing the right thing?

Over the last decades,liver transplantation has become the standard care for many forms of end-stage liver disease,both in adults and in *** prognosis after pediatric liver transplantation(pLT)has steadily increased up to a patient survival at 5 years of 85%and an estimated graft half life of 31 years(1,2).In the early days of pLT,the transplanted organ originated from deceased *** 1990,adult-to-child living donor liver transplantation(LDLT)programs have developed,which rapidly gained popularity,particularly in Europe and Asia(2,3).A major stimulus for LDLT has been the limited availability of deceased *** indications for liver transplantation have expanded,particularly for adult patients,at a higher rate than the availability of donor ***,the quality of donor organs has steadily declined,resulting in a decreased utilization of livers from deceased donors for transplantation(4).The limited availability of qualified deceased donor livers has further stimulated LDLT:in Europe,for example,the percentage of living donor organs used for pLT increased from 7%before 2000 to 40%since 2010(1).

Functionalized monodisperse microbubble production:microfluidic method for fast,controlled,and automated removal of excess coating material

Functionalized monodisperse microbubbles have the potential to boost the sensitivity and efficacy of molecular ultrasound imaging and targeted drug delivery using bubbles and *** bubbles can be produced in a microfluidic flow focusing ***,their functionalization and sequential use require removal of the excess lipids from the bubble suspension to minimize the use of expensive ligands and to avoid competitive binding and blocking of the receptor *** date,excess lipid removal is performed by centrifugation,which is labor intensive and challenging to *** importantly,as we show,the increased hydrostatic pressure during centrifugation can reduce bubble ***,we introduce a novel automated microfluidic’washing’***,bubbles are injected in a microfluidic chamber 1mm in height where they are left to float against the top ***,lipid-free medium is pumped through the chamber to remove excess lipids while the bubbles remain located at the top ***,the washed bubbles are resuspended and removed from the device into a collection *** demonstrate that the present method can(i)reduce the excess lipid concentration by 4 orders of magnitude,(ii)be fully automated,and(iii)be performed in minutes while the size distribution,functionality,and acoustic response of the bubbles remain ***,the presented method is a gateway to the fully automated production of functionalized monodisperse microbubbles.

Counting the SNAREs needed for membrane fusion

SNARE proteins mediate most membrane fusion reactions in eukaryotic cells,and are thereby vital for many functions,including synaptic transmission,cell growth,and ***,until recently it was still unclear how many of these proteins are required to catalyze membrane fusion in *** a recent Science paper,Mohrmann et al.(2010)elegantly show that in chromaffin cells,three SNARE complexes are required for the synchronous release of granules,whereas only a single SNARE complex is sufficient for overall release.

The vitality of European forests continues to decline due to new pests and diseases,climate-change related disturbances and high loads of atmospheric nitrogen *** soil health is a major factor underpinning the low vitality of West-European *** tree species with soil ameliorative traits is proposed as an avenue to counteract soil acidification and improve overall forest *** we evaluate the impact of black cherry(prunus serotina Ehrh.),a known rich litter species,on the vitality of neighboring pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)in ten mixed forests on sand in Germany,Belgium and the *** found that black cherry admixture increases foliar N and p to a surplus whereas it causes deficiencies in foliar Mg,thereby resulting in an overall negative effect on oak foliar nutrient ***,defoliation of oak leaves by herbivory decreases with the proximity of black *** structural equation modelling(SEM),we tested the hypothesized‘improved soil health’*** analyses showed that black cherry admixture leads to lower accumulation in the humus layer,resulting in higher soil base saturation which has a positive effect on foliar Ca yet a negative effect on total ***,the SEM illustrated that herbivory of oak leaves decreases when black cherry is admixed,both via dilution and improved soil *** effects of black cherry on oak vitality via“improved soil health”in our SEM are however small in comparison to direct ***,our study showed that the combined positive and negative impacts of black cherry on oak vitality are limited,which tempers the potential benefits of using the rich litter species to counteract oak decline via improved soil health–yet,the concern of black cherry as an invasive alien species negatively affecting the vitality of mature pedunculate oak trees may also be exaggerated.
