Effects of Large-Scale Climatic Oscillations on the Variability of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall

In India,large-scale climatic oscillations have strong influences on the Indian summer monsoon rainfall(ISMR),which plays a crucial role in India’s agricultural production and economic ***,there are limited studies in India that explore the influences of decadal and multidecadal oscillations on the ISMR and associated El Niño–Southern Oscillation(ENSO).Therefore,in this study we carried out a comprehensive and detailed investigation to understand the influences of ENSO,pacific decadal oscillation(pDO),and Atlantic multidecadal oscillation(AMO)on ISMR across different regions in *** statistical significance of ISMR associated with different phases(positive/warm and negative/cold)of ENSO,pDO,and AMO(individual analysis),and combined ENSO–AMO,and ENSO–pDO(coupled analysis)were analysed by using the nonparametric Wilcoxon Rank Sum(WRS)*** individual analysis results indicate that in addition to the ENSO teleconnection,AMO and pDO significantly affect the spatial patterns of *** analysis was performed to understand how the phase shift of pDO and AMO has modulated the rainfall during El Niño and La Niña *** results indicate that the La Niña associated with a positive pDO phase caused excessive precipitation of about 21%–150%in the peninsular,west–central,and hilly regions compared to the individual effect of ENSO/pDO/AMO on ISMR;similarly,the west–central,coastal,and northwest regions received 15%–56%of excessive ***,during the El Niño combined with pDO positive(AMO positive),above-normal precipitation was observed in hilly,northeast,and coastal(hilly,northeast,west–central,and coastal)regions,opposite to the results obtained from the individual ENSO *** study emphasizes the importance of accounting the decadal and multidecadal forcing when examining variations in the ISMR during different phases of ENSO events.

Rayleigh-type wave propagation through liquid layer over corrugated substrate

The propagation of the Rayleigh-type wave in a fluid layer overlying a corrugated substrate is studied. The corrugated substrate is considered as a fluid satu- rated poroelastic substrate and a quadratically heterogeneous isotropic elastic substrate in Case I and Case II, respectively. Closed form expressions of dispersion relation for Case I and Case II ave obtained. The influence of corrugation, porosity, and hetero- geneity on the phase velocity of Rayleigh-type wave, for both cases, is highlighted and demonstrated through numerical computation and graphical discussion. Neglecting cor- rugation at the common interface, expressions of phase velocity of the Rayleigh-type wave for both cases ave derived in a closed form as a special case of the problem. Comparison between the presence and the absence of both heterogeneity and poroelasticity in the substrate of the composite structure is a key in the present study.

Cobalt(Co)-modified brownmillerite kBiFe_(2)O_(5)(kBFO;[kBiFe_(2(1−x))Co_(2x)O_(5)(x=0,0.05)])polycrystalline is synthesized following the solid-state reaction *** refinement of X-ray diffraction data confirmed the phase purity of kBFO and kBiFe_(1.9)Co_(0.1)O_(5)(kBFCO).The optical bandgap energy(Eg)of kBFO decreased from 1.59 to 1.51 eV because of Co *** decrease in bandgap can be attributed to the tilting of the Fe–O tetrahedral structure of *** observed room-temperature Raman peaks of kBFCO shifted by 3 cm^(−1) toward a lower wavenumber than that of *** shift in Raman active modes can be attributed to the change in the bond angles and bond lengths of the Fe–O tetrahedral structure and modification in response to oxygen deficiency in kBFO because of Co *** with that of kBFO,the frequency-dependent dielectric constant and dielectric loss of kBFCO decrease at room temperature,which is a consequence of the reduction in oxygen migration and modification in response to vibrational modes present in the sample.

Effect of electroslag remelting and homogenization on hydrogen flaking in AMS-4340 ultra-high-strength steels

Hydrogen flakes and elemental segregation are the main causes of steel rejection. To eliminate hydrogen flaking, the present study focuses on the manufacture of AMS-4340 ultra-high-strength steel through an alternate route. AMS-4340 was prepared using three different processing routes. The primary processing route consisted of melting in an electric arc furnace, refining in a ladle refining furnace, and vacuum degassing. After primary processing, the heat processes(D1, D2, and D3) were cast into cylindrical electrodes. For secondary processing, electroslag remelting(ESR) was carried out on the primary heats to obtain four secondary heats: E1, E2, E3, and E4. Homogenization of ingots E1, E2, E3, and E4 was carried out at 1220°C for 14, 12, 12, and 30 h, respectively, followed by an antiflaking treatment at 680°C and air cooling. In addition, the semi-finished ESR ingot E4 was again homogenized at 1220°C for 6–8 h and a second antiflaking treatment was performed at 680°C for 130 h followed by air cooling. The chemical segregation of each heat was monitored through a spectroscopy technique. The least segregation was observed for heat E4. Macrostructure examination revealed the presence of hydrogen flakes in heats E1, E2, and E3, whereas no hydrogen flakes were observed in heat E4. Ultrasonic testing revealed no internal defects in heat E4, whereas internal defects were observed in the other heats. A grain size investigation revealed a finer grain size for E4 compared with those for the other heats. Steel produced in heat E4 also exhibited superior mechanical properties. Therefore, the processing route used for heat E4 can be used to manufacture an AMS-4340 ultra-high-strength steel with superior properties compared with those of AMS-4340 prepared by the other investigated routes.

On the Urbach's formula for evaluation of electron trapping parameter:The case of persistent luminescent materials

Urbach’s formula for evaluation of electron trapping parameter that happens to be the earliest has emerged as a popular method amongst researchers of persistent luminescence. In this study, we analysed the thermoluminescence curves of glow-in-the-dark phosphors. Those included some curves recorded by us and others that solely used the Urbach’s formula. Using the parameter obtained by rigorous analysis by fitting the whole TL curves, we presented a comprehensive picture of the potentialities and limitations of the simple Urbach’s relation E=T_m/500, where E is the trap-depth and T_m the peak temperature in absolute scale, first proposed by Urbach in 1930. Some simple thumb rules on the use of the formula were presented for beginners as well as non-specialists so that entry of physically unrealistic data into the literature was prevented.

ELECTRICAL TRANSpORT pROpERTIES OF pRISTINE AND IODINE DOpED pOLYETHERIMIDES

Electrical conduction behavior of pristine and iodine doped polyetherimides （pEI） has been investigated under both transient and steady state conditions in the operating temperature range 50-200℃ at various electric fields of 12-60 kV/cm. The transient currents show the hyperbolic decay character, and the decay exponent p （a measure of current decay rate） decreases with temperature （T） and doping concentration. The origin of transient currents has been attributed to the dipolar nature of carbonyl （〉C：O） groups and the ether linkages present in the main chain of pEI. The low field steady state conduction is ohmic in nature. The magnitudes of ionic jump distance （a） values do not favor an ionic type of conduction as a possible conduction mechanism in pristine as well as iodine doped pEI. The Schottky coefficients estimations do not show the possibility of Schottky type or poole-Frenkel type conduction mechanisms in the low temperature region （〈 120℃）, however, in the high temperature region （〉 120℃） there is a certain possibility of poole- Frenkel type conduction mechanism in both pristine and iodine doped samples. The dual slope in the lg/versus 1/T curves for iodine doped samples indicates the presence of more than one type of trapping levels.

Impact of particle Crush-Size and Weight on Rock-Eval S2,S4,and kinetics of Shales

The Rock-Eval technique in the last few decades has found extensive application for source rock *** impact of shale particle crush-size and sample weight on key Rock-Eval measurements,*** S;curve(heavier hydrocarbons released during the non-isothermal pyrolysis-stage)and the S;curve(CO_(2)released from oxidation of organic matter during the oxidation-stage)are investigated in this *** high and low total organic carbon(TOC)samples of different thermal maturity levels,it is apparent that particle crush-size has a strong influence on the results obtained from RockEval analysis,with the effect being stronger in high-TOC *** comparison to the coarser-splits,S;and pyrolyzable carbon(pC)were found to be higher for the finer crush sizes in all the shales *** S_(2)CO_(2)oxidation curve shapes of permian shales show contrasting signatures in comparison to the paleocene-aged lignitic shale,both from Indian basins.A reduced TOC was observed with rising sample weight for a mature permian shale from the Jharia basin,while the other shales sampled showed no significant *** results indicate that the S_(2)CO_(2)curve and the S_(2)T_(2),are strongly dependent on the type of organic-matter present and its level of thermal *** weight and particle size both influence the S;-curve shapes at different heating *** increasing sample weights,an increase in S;-curve magnitude was observed for the shales of diverse *** differences in the S;curve shape lead to substantially different kinetic distributions being fitted to these *** findings are considered to have significant implications for the accuracy of reaction kinetics obtained from pyrolysis experiments using different sample characteristics.
