Radon is a radioactive gas that is naturally produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil,rock and *** International Commission on Radiological protection(ICRp)and World Health Organization(WHO)requirements include controlling indoor radon exposure and settings of a reference level for the annual average activity concentration of up to 300 bq/m3 for dwellings and public *** measurements in school buildings have long been carried out in many *** measurements in schools in bulgaria have started and are *** study concerns the measurements of radon concentration(CRn)in all state school buildings in one of the black Sea regions,Varna district,and the analysis of indoor *** survey of 1,185 premises of 107 schools was conducted from December 2019/January 2020 to March/May 2020 using a passive *** AM(Arithmetic Mean)of CRn in the premises of the studied schools on the territory of Varna district is 130 bq/m^(3),and the geometric mean is 97 bq/m^(3).The number of premises exceeding the national reference level of 300 bq/m^(3) is 72 located in 38 schools(about 36% of schools).A statistically significant difference(KW(Kruskal-Wallis),pbetween the radon data,grouped by ***,the radon data were classified into two groups based on municipality location:on the black Sea coast and *** located near the sea have a higher value of *** order to more accurately assess the exposure of pupils and teachers,the results are divided into four groups,depending on the type of use of the premises and the floor on which they are *** highest CRn value was found in the study rooms used for specialized education such as physics,chemistry,music etc.(AM=155 bq/m3),which can be explained by their smaller size and less frequent use.A statistically significant difference(KW,pposure in the examined rooms depends on the type of use.T

The Capsicum genus(pepper)is a part of the Solanacae *** has been important in many cultures worldwide for its key nutritional components and uses as spices,medicines,ornamentals and *** population growth is associated with demand for more nutritionally valuable vegetables while contending with decreasing resources and available *** conditions require increased efficiency in pepper breeding to deal with these imminent *** resequencing of inbred lines we have completed a valuable haplotype map(HapMap)for the pepper genome based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNp).The identified SNps were annotated and classified based on their gene annotation in the pepper draft genome sequence and phenotype of the sequenced inbred lines.A selection of one marker per gene model was utilized to create the pepperSNp16K array,which simultaneously genotyped 16405 SNps,of which 90.7%were found to be informative.A set of 84 inbred and hybrid lines and a mapping population of 90 interspecific F2 individuals were utilized to validate the *** analysis of the inbred lines shows a distinct separation of bell versus chile/hot pepper types and separates them into five distinct germplasm *** interspecific population created between Tabasco(*** chile type)and p4(*** blocky type)produced a linkage map with 5546 markers separated into 1361 bins on twelve 12 linkage groups representing 1392.3 *** publically available genotyping platform can be used to rapidly assess a large number of markers in a reproducible high-throughput manner for *** a standardized tool for genetic analyses,the pepperSNp16K can be used worldwide to share findings and analyze QTLs for important traits leading to continued improvement of pepper for *** and information on the array are available through the Solanaceae Genomics Network.

Natural History, Outcomes and Antibiotic Treatment for Ventilator-Associated Tracheobronchitis in Critical Ill patients

We assessed incidence and outcomes of patients with ventilator-associated respiratory infections (VARI) due to tracheobronchitis (VAT) and pneumonia (VAp), including length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay and ventilator days. We also examined pathogens, rate of progression from VAT to VAp, and impact of antibiotic therapy for VAT. Data analysis included 234 patients, 100 patients (43%) had at least moderate (+++) bacterial growth in their semi-quantitative endotracheal aspirate (SQ-ETA) cultures. VAT and VAp were each diagnosed in 34 (15%) patients. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen isolated and had the highest rate of progression from VAT to VAp. Seven (21%) of the 34 patients were diagnosed with VAT that later progressed to VAp in averaged 3 days. patients diagnosed with VAT had significantly more ventilator days (9 vs 6, p p pital days (22 vs 17, p bserved in the clinical outcomes of the 25 VAT patients with timely, appropriate antibiotics compared to the 9 VAT patients who did not receive timely appropriate antibiotics. VAT was a risk factor for increased ventilator days, longer length of ICU and hospital stay. The time window from VAT to VAp allowed physicians to identify the pathogens and sensitivity profile needed to treat VAT with appropriate antibiotics. Data from well-designed studies were needed to assess the impact of early, appropriate antibiotic therapy for VAT, the choice of antibiotics, as well as the duration and route of administration.

planning of Cost Effective Water Harvesting in a Sub basin of the Subarnarekha River in the State of West bengal, India

Development and judicious management of available water resources play a key role for economic upliftment of any region. The agricultural pattern and social and demographic status in the upper basin of the Dulung Nala Stream （a tributary of the Subarnarekha River） in the western part of the State of West bengal, India, reveals growing demand of water in the basin. The paper reports different management plans involving different types of water harvesting structures （and associated different types of water distribution systems） and different crop combinations and with benefit/cost ratios varying from 1.3 to 11.2 for the basin. The study points out that the judicious choice of both the water harvesting structure as well as the water distribution system is important. proper planning of crop pattern is also to be emphasized for reaping maximum benefit. It further emphasizes that cost- benefit ratio cannot solely govern the choice of structure and that maximum utilization of catchmental water and thus enhancement of agricultural output （and also economic return from the catchment） i.e. quantum of benefit is also important. The water harvesting structures proposed in this study can be implemented in other semi-arid regions of India having almost the same climatic and socio-economic conditions.

Salt tolerant culturable microbes accessible in the soil of the Sundarban Mangrove forest, India

Sundarban Mangrove forest is highly productive marine ecosystem where halophilic microbes actively participate in bio-mineralization and biotransformation of minerals. The population of aerobic halophilic microbes was studied to determine their distribution with the availability of different physicochemical parameters with increasing depth of this forest sediment. The present study revealed that microbes present in the top soil region were less tolerant to fluctuation in salinity than the middle and bottom segment. Microbes isolated from bottom segment showed higher growth rate in anaerobic condition. A decreasing trend of total microbial population and organic carbon content of soil were found with increase in depth. In contrary a reverse profile was found for salinity. A significant stratification was found to exist among microbial population and the salty nature of the soil of Sundarban Mangrove forest.

background： The disclosure of the poplar genome strengthens its position as well-established model organism. populus has been subject of several proteome studies, but up to date no comparative study was performed on the extraction method of soluble proteins for this species. The extraction is the most critical step in two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and each extraction method has its advantages, disadvantages and limitations. Therefore protein extraction methods should be optimized for each tissue before starting an experimental setup. In prospect of future DIGE （Differential Gel electrophoresis） experiments for the investigation of the effects of cadmium and inoculation with plant growth promoting bacteria at the proteome level, the aim of this study was to optimize an extraction method for soluble proteins of poplar leaves and roots. Results： The acetone-phenol extraction method was found to be the most suited, rendering a high spot number and low background interference. During further optimization, several critical steps in the extraction method were revealed. Conclusion： Aiming to optimize the extraction of soluble leaf and root proteins of populus deltoides × （trichocarpa× deltoides） compatible with DIGE analysis, a protocol rendering high reproducibility, low background interference and a high spot number was established, however no novel insights were acquired.

CCL2/MCp-1 and NFκbGene Transcription in Remnant Kidneys after physical Activity and Renoprotection

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive disease and affects approximately 10% of the population. The major late pathologic feature of CKD is interstitial fibrosis in the kidney characterized by extracellular matrix deposition but in early stage, several profibrotic and proinflammatory cytokines as well as growth factors are expressed. The renin-angiotensin and ET systems both play an important role in the pathogenesis of CKD and the blockade of these systems has been shown to suppress proinflammatory cytokines and to arrest the progression of CKD. We have demonstrated earlier also the renoprotective effect of physical activity on the experimental CKD progression (pechter et al., 2003). Aim of the study was to investigate the effects of non-drug treatment, physical activity, to the extent of gene expression in experimental CKD and to compare with endothelin receptor blocker (ERb, sitaxentan) and standard nephroprotective drug, angiotensin receptor blocker (ARb, losartan) treatments. Expression of mRNA was assessed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. CCL2/MCp-1 and nuclear factor-κb (NFκb) gene expression was measured in whole kidneys. Results revealed that CCL2/MCp-1 gene expression (data presented in poster presentation ASN Renal Week 2010, pechter et al.) was increased in the 5/6 NpX rat kidneys, and the increase was lessened significantly after physical activity and losartan therapy. ERb treatment appeared less effective. Combined ARb and ERb treatment as well as drugs alone or physical therapy prevented the increase in systemic blood pressure, albuminuria and CCL2/MCp-1 as well as NFκb gene expression. We conclude that non-drug and drug treatments both were effective regarding the rate of the progression of experimental CKD measured by physiological and molecular biomarkers of chronic inflammation in kidney tissue.

A randomized open-label trial of on-demand rabeprazole vs ranitidine for patients with non-erosive reflux disease

AIM： To compare the efficacy of the proton-pump inhibitor, rabeprazole, with that of the H2-receptor antagonist, ranitidine, as on-demand therapy for relieving symptoms associated with non-erosive reflux disease （NEED）.METHODS： This is a single center, prospective, randomized, open-label trial of on-demand therapy with rabeprazole （group A） vs ranitidine （group b） for 4 wk. Eighty-three patients who presented to the American University of beirut Medical Center with persistent gas- troesophageal reflux disease （GERD） symptoms and a normal upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were eligible for the study. patients in group A （n = 44） were al-lowed a maximum rabeprazole dose of 20 mg twice daily, while those in group b （n = 39） were allowed a maximum ranitidine dose of 300 mg twice daily. Ef- ficacy was assessed by patient evaluation of global symptom relief, scores of the SF-36 quality of life （QoL） questionnaires, total number of pills used, and number of medication-free days.RESULTS： Among the 83 patients who were enrolled in the study, 76 patients （40 in the rabeprazole group and 36 in the ranitidine group） completed the 4-wk trial. baseline characteristics were comparable between both groups. After 4 wk, there was no significant difference in the subjective global symptom relief between the rabeprazole and the ranitidine groups （71.4% vs 65.4%, respectively; p = 0.9）. There were no statistically significant differences between mean cumulative scores of the SF-36 QoL questionnaire for the two study groups （rabeprazole 22.40±27.53 vs ranitidine 17.28 ± 37.06; p = 0.582）. There was no significant difference in the mean number of pills used （rabeprazole 35.70±29.75 vs ranitidine 32.86±26.98; p = 0.66）. Water Soluble propolis and Royal Jelly Enhance the Antimicrobial Activity of Honeys and promote the Growth of Human Macrophage Cell Line

Due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotic, an increase in antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria is evolving. Attention should be focused on natural alternatives to antibiotics, like propolis, royal jelly （R J） and honeys. They all have strong antibacterial properties due to the active substances they contain. This study investigated the effect of combination of water soluble propolis （WSp） Greitl20 or fresh royal jelly （F-RJ）（MiZigoj） and Forest honeys as antibacterial against Escherichia coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, proteus mirabilis, Acinetobacter baumanii, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus （MRSA）, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae and Candida albicans. These substances are also cell growth promoters for human macrophage （TLT） cell line. WSp Greitl20, F-RJ （M） and different Forest honeys were prepared in saline as 10% solutions. The antimicrobial activity was expressed as the minimal inhibitory concentration （MIC） in mg/mL. The growth promotion activity was measured at optical density （OD） 595 nm. The combination ofWSp Greitl20 with different Forest honeys is better than F-RJ （M） in same combination with different Forest honeys. The best antibacterial/antifungal activity was found with the combination of 10% WSp Greit 120 in the Forest honey （1：10） from Italy or Spain. When measuring the growth promoting activity of TLT cell line, the best activity was detected at the combination of 10% WSp Greitl20 in the Forest honey from Italy （GI3 = 0.796 ± 0.014 and GI5 = 1.133± 0.022）. Antimicrobial and growth promoting activities are correlated and WSp-dependent.
