Visualizing the spatial water quality of Bentota, Sri Lanka in the presence of seawater intrusion

Seawater flows towards the inlands along with the rivers and canals, through the process of infiltration and leaks in the ground water characterized by high concentrations of soluble salts. High salinity concentrations can make groundwater unsuitable for public consumption and surface water unsuitable for irrigation and agricultural activities. this study envisages the fluctuations of ground and surface water quality of Bentota area in the presence of seawater intrusion. the temporal and spatial variations of eleven water parameters were monitored by collecting the water samples during one year period. Spatial distributions were assessed by applying the Inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method in Arc GIS 10.5 software. Water quality is assessed on the integration of all parameters in terms of an index based on the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. the significant linear relationship between the considered parameters of surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) were identified applying correlation analysis using SpSS software. All parameters of surface water were above the permissible limits of WHO standards. Surface water quality index values with respect to 60% of canals show very poor quality (>1 250) of surface water indicating their unsuitability for irrigation activities. those surface water bodies indicated very highly saline conditions during dry months. the spatial distribution of ground water quality index with respect to the highest parameter values of each sampling location indicates that 52.2% of total land extent of Bentota Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD) has good quality of ground water which is suitable for drinking. Its 47.2% of total land extent has poor quality of ground water for drinking purpose and less than 0.5% of the area consists of excellent or very poor quality of ground water in each. this study helps to manage coastal aquifers by understanding the extreme water quality conditions and coastal salinity.

Market garden products can carry several types of microorganisms, and their consumption is the source of many cases of food poisoning. this work aimed to improve food safety in Benin. In characterizing strains of K. pneumoniae and fluorescent pseudomonas spp. at the biochemical and molecular level, the target was to identify contaminated watering water and garden products sold during Cotonou in both the dry and rainy seasons. A total of 164 samples of market garden products and 22 samples of watering water were investigated. the results showed that 5.91% of market garden products and watering water were contaminated by K. pneumoniae and 20.43% by fluorescent pseudomonas spp. During the dry season, cabbage was most contaminated by fluorescent pseudomonas spp. (50%). pool water was more contaminated with K. pneumoniae (17%). All isolated strains were resistant to both amoxicillin and penicillin. All strains of K. pneumoniae and fluorescent pseudomonas spp. were not resistant to imipenem, and 22% of them produced penicillinase. Among the 49 strains producing penicillinase isolated, 64.29% and 21.43% carried blaTEM and blaSHV respectively while 14.28% carried blaCTX-M genes. In light of the previously-developed results and considering the importance of horticultural products in Beninese food habits, we must improve national awareness of the risk for foodborne illness.

In the present paper we use a control function to define a generalized contraction in Menger spaces and obtain a unique fixed point theorem. the work is in line with the research for developing probabilistic contractions with the help of control functions and related fixed point results. We have given an example to which our theorem is applicable. Some corollaries are also discussed.

Impact of mycotoxin on immune response and consequences for pig health

Mycotoxins are fungal secondary metabolites detected in many agricultural commodities, especially cereals. Due to their high consumption of cereals, pigs are exposed to these toxins. In the European Union, regulations and/or recommendations exist in pig feed for aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, fumonisins,zearalenone, and trichothecenes, deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin. these mycotoxins have different toxic effects, but they all target the immune system. they have immunostimulatory or immunosuppressive effects depending on the toxin, the concentration and the parameter investigated. the immune system is primarily responsible for defense against invading organisms. the consequences of the ingestion of mycotoxin-contaminated feed are an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, a reactivation of chronic infection and a decreased vaccine efficacy. In this review we summarized the data available on the effect of mycotoxins on the immune system and the consequences for pig health.
