Clean,but not green:Emission assessment,forecast modelling and policy solutions for plastic microbeads from personal care products in India

Intentionally added plastic microbeads in personal care products(pCp)are an underestimated source of *** microbeads are added as fillers,to increase product volume or aesthetics and allegedly have the purpose of cleansing and *** assess and forecast microbead emissions in India,this study analysed 45 items from four different categories of personal care products:face wash,face scrub,shower gel and body scrub available in the Indian market and determined microbead abundance,size,colour,shape and polymer ***,an emission estimation and time-seriesbased forecast for 2030 was done using ARIMA(0,2,0)for individual categories and *** results indicate that 45.00%of the products contained irregular or smooth microplastics,with polyethylene being the dominant polymer,followed by polypropylene,polystyrene,polyurethane and polycaprolactone.A significant number of products(23.33%)contained cellulose microbeads,with ambiguity regarding their *** identified microbeads were mainly irregular in shape and granular in texture,especially ***/transparent colour dominated the identified microbeads,followed by blue,pink,yellow,red and *** 1.34%of the total product contained plastic microbeads,with 5.04%and 0.04%being the highest and lowest percentages *** average size of microbeads was found to be 640.74 mm,452.45 mm,556.66 mm and 606.30 mm in different *** overall annual emission estimation was 3.51×10^(19)(highest),2.14×10^(18)(lowest)and 1.37×10^(19)(average)in 2021 and forecasted to be 4.12×10^(19)(highest),2.52×10^(18)(lowest)and 1.611019(average)in *** exorbitantly high value is due to India's significant population,globalisation,inefficient wastewater efficiency,growing economy and disposable income.A lack of policies and adequate regulations further add to *** study emphasises and recommends the development of stringent policies and other well-tailored mitig

Entangled photon pair generation in an integrated SiC platform

Entanglement plays a vital role in quantum information *** to its unique material properties,silicon carbide recently emerged as a promising candidate for the scalable implementation of advanced quantum information processing *** date,however,only entanglement of nuclear spins has been reported in silicon carbide,while an entangled photon source,whether it is based on bulk or chip-scale technologies,has remained ***,we report the demonstration of an entangled photon source in an integrated silicon carbide platform for the first ***,strongly correlated photon pairs are efficiently generated at the telecom C-band wavelength through implementing spontaneous four-wave mixing in a compact microring resonator in the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator *** maximum coincidence-to-accidental ratio exceeds 600 at a pump power of 0.17 mW,corresponding to a pair generation rate of(9±1)×10^(3) pairs/***-time entanglement is created and verified for such signal-idler photon pairs,with the two-photon interference fringes exhibiting a visibility larger than 99%.The heralded single-photon properties are also measured,with the heralded g^((2))(0)on the order of 10^(−3),demonstrating the SiC platform as a prospective fully integrated,complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible single-photon source for quantum applications.

Assessment of Seasonal Rainfall prediction in Ethiopia: Evaluating a Dynamic Recurrent Neural Network to Downscale ECMWF-SEAS5 Rainfall

Seasonal rainfall plays a vital role in both environmental dynamics and decision-making for rainfed agriculture in Ethiopia, a country often impacted by extreme climate events such as drought and flooding. predicting the onset of the rainy season and providing localized rainfall forecasts for Ethiopia is challenging due to the changing spatiotemporal patterns and the country's rugged topography. The Climate Hazards Group Infra Red precipitation with Station Data(CHIRpS), ERA5-Land total precipitation and temperature data are used from 1981–2022 to predict spatial rainfall by applying an artificial neural network(ANN). The recurrent neural network(RNN) is a nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous input(NARX), which includes feed-forward connections and multiple network layers, employing the Levenberg Marquart algorithm. This method is applied to downscale data from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts fifth-generation seasonal forecast system(ECMWF-SEAS5) and the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change(CMCC) to the specific locations of rainfall stations in Ethiopia for the period 1980–2020. Across the stations, the results of NARX exhibit strong associations and reduced errors. The statistical results indicate that, except for the southwestern Ethiopian highlands, the downscaled monthly precipitation data exhibits high skill scores compared to the station records, demonstrating the effectiveness of the NARX approach for predicting local seasonal rainfall in Ethiopia's complex terrain. In addition to this spatial ANN of the summer season precipitation, temperature, as well as the combination of these two variables, show promising results.

This paper investigates the role of global context for crowd ***,a pure transformer is used to extract features with global information from overlapping image *** by classification,we add a context token to the input sequence,to facilitate information exchange with tokens corresponding to image patches throughout transformer *** to the fact that transformers do not explicitly model the tried-and-true channel-wise interactions,we propose a token-attention module(TAM)to recalibrate encoded features through channel-wise attention informed by the context *** that,it is adopted to predict the total person count of the image through regression-token module(RTM).Extensive experiments on various datasets,including ShanghaiTech,UCFQNRF,JHU-CROWD++and NWpU,demonstrate that the proposed context extraction techniques can significantly improve the performanceover the baselines.

A simulation study on spatial and time resolution for a cost-effective positron emission particle tracking system

This work is the second part of a simulation study investigating the processing of densely packed and moving granular assemblies by positron emission particle tracking (pEpT).Since medical positron emission tomography (pET) scanners commonly used for pEpT are very expensive,a pET-like detector system based on cost-effective organic plastic scintillator bars is being developed and tested for its *** this context,the spatial resolution of a resting positron source,a source moving on a freely designed model path,and a particle motion given by a discrete element method (DEM) simulation is studied using Monte Carlo simulations and the software toolkit *** not only extended the simulation and reconstruction to a moving source but also significantly improved the spatial resolution compared to previous work by adding oversampling and iteration to the reconstruction ***,in the case of a source following a trajectory developed from DEM simulations,a very good resolution of about 1 mm in all three directions and an average 3D deviation between simulated and reconstructed events of 2.3 mm could be ***,the resolution for realistic particle motion within the generic grate system (which is the test rig for further experimental studies) is well below the smallest particle *** simulation of the dependence of the reconstruction accuracy on tracer particle location revealed a nearly constant efficiency within the entire detector system,which demonstrates that boundary effects can be neglected.

Adeno-associated virus(AAV)has emerged as a pivotal delivery tool in clinical gene therapy owing to its minimal pathogenicity and ability to establish long-term gene expression in different *** AAV(rAAV)has been engineered for enhanced specificity and developed as a tool for treating various ***,as rAAV is being more widely used as a therapy,the increased demand has created challenges for the existing manufacturing *** rAAV-based gene therapy products have received regulatory approval,but there continue to be concerns about safely using high-dose viral therapies in humans,including immune responses and adverse effects such as genotoxicity,hepatotoxicity,thrombotic microangiopathy,and *** this review,we explore AAV biology with an emphasis on current vector engineering strategies and manufacturing *** discuss how rAAVs are being employed in ongoing clinical trials for ocular,neurological,metabolic,hematological,neuromuscular,and cardiovascular diseases as well as *** outline immune responses triggered by rAAV,address associated side effects,and discuss strategies to mitigate these *** hope that discussing recent advancements and current challenges in the field will be a helpful guide for researchers and clinicians navigating the ever-evolving landscape of rAAV-based gene therapy.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of the social structure of Indo-pacific humpback dolphins(Sousa chinensis)in Xiamen waters from 2007 to 2019

As highly social animals,Indo-pacific humpback dolphins(Sousa chinensis)exhibit community ***,our understanding of the external and internal factors influencing these dynamics,as well as their spatiotemporal variations,is still *** the present study,variations in the social structure of an endangered Indo-pacific humpback dolphin population in Xiamen Bay,China,were monitored over two distinct periods(2007–2010 and 2017–2019)to analyze the effects of habitat utilization and the composition of individuals within the *** both periods,the population demonstrated a strikingly similar pattern of social differentiation,characterized by the division of individuals into two main clusters and one small ***,the two primary clusters occupied the eastern and western waters,respectively,although the core distribution area of the eastern cluster shifted further eastward between the two *** this distribution shift,the temporal stability of the social structure and inter-associations within the eastern cluster remained unaffected.A subset of 16individuals observed in both periods,comprising 51.6%and 43.2%of the population in each respective period,emerged as a foundational element of the social structure and may be responsible for sustaining social structure stability,especially during the 2007–2010 *** observations suggest that the composition of dominant individuals,an internal factor,had a more substantial influence on the formation of the social network than changes in habitat use,an external ***,the study proposes distinct conservation measures tailored to each of the two main clusters.

Electric Load Forecasting(ELF)is the central instrument for planning and controlling demand response programs,electricity trading,and consumption *** to the increasing automation of these processes,meaningful and transparent forecasts become more and more ***,at the same time,the complexity of the used machine learning models and architectures *** there is an increasing interest in interpretable and explainable load forecasting methods,this work conducts a literature review to present already applied approaches regarding explainability and interpretability for load forecasts using Machine *** on extensive literature research covering eight publication portals,recurring modeling approaches,trends,and modeling techniques are identified and clustered by properties to achieve more interpretable and explainable load *** results on interpretability show an increase in the use of probabilistic models,methods for time series decomposition and the use of fuzzy logic in addition to classically interpretable *** explainable approaches are Feature Importance and Attention *** discussion shows that a lot of knowledge from the related field of time series forecasting still needs to be adapted to the problems in *** to other applications of explainable and interpretable methods such as clustering,there are currently relatively few research results,but with an increasing trend.
