Use of probiotics for prevention of radiation-induced diarrhea

AIM： To investigate the efficacy of a high-potency probiotic preparation on prevention of radiation-induced diarrhea in cancer patients.METHODS： This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Four hundred and ninety patients who underwent adjuvant postoperative radiation therapy after surgery for sigmoid, rectal, or cervical cancer were assigned to either the high-potency probiotic preparation VSL#3 （one sachet t.i.d.,） or placebo starting from the first day of radiation therapy. Efficacy endpoints were incidence and severity of radiation-induced diarrhea, daily number of bowel movements, and the time from the start of the study to the use of Ioperamide as rescue medication. RESULTS： More placebo patients had radiation-induced diarrhea than VSL#3 patients （124 of 239 patients, 51.8%, and 77 of 243 patients, 31.6%; p 〈 0.001） and more patients given placebo suffered grade 3 or 4 diarrhea compared with VSL#3 recipients （55.4% and 1.4%, p 〈 0.001）. Daily bowel movements were 14.7 ± 6 and 5.1 ± 3 among placebo and VSL#3 recipients （p 〈 0.05）, and the mean time to the use of Ioperamide was 86 ± 6 h for placebo patients and 122 ± 8 h for VSL#3 patients （p 〈 0.001）. CONCLUSION： probiotic lactic acid-producing bacteria are an easy, safe, and feasible approach to protect cancer patients against the risk of radiation-induced diarrhea.

A challenging topic in nonlinear dynamics concerns the study of fractional-order systems without equilibrium *** particular, no paper has been published to date regarding the presence of hyperchaos in these systems. This paper aims to bridge the gap by introducing a new example of fractional-order hyperchaotic system without equilibrium points. The conducted analysis shows that hyperchaos exists in the proposed system when its order is as low as 3.84. Moreover, an interesting application of hyperchaotic synchronization to the considered fractional-order system is provided.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most common cancer worldwide and,despite improved treatments,is still an important cause of cancer-related *** encompasses a complex of diseases arising from a multistep process of genetic and epigenetic *** heterogeneity in the molecular and biological features of CRC,chromosomal instability is a hallmark of cancer and cancer cells may also circumvent replicative senescence and acquire the ability to sustain unlimited ***/telomerase interplay is an important mechanism involved in both genomic stability and cellular replicative potential,and its dysfunction plays a key role in the oncogenetic *** erosion of telomeres,mainly because of cell proliferation,may be accelerated by specific alterations in the genes involved in CRC,such as ApC and *** there is general agreement that the shortening of telomeres plays a role in the early steps of CRC carcinogenesis by promoting chromosomal instability,the prognostic role of telomere length in CRC is still under *** activation of telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT),the catalytic component of the telomerase complex,allows cancer cells to grow indefinitely by maintaining the length of the telomeres,thus favouring tumour formation/*** studies indicate that TERT increases with disease progression,and most studies suggest that telomerase is a useful prognostic *** TERT mRNA may also be a promising marker for the minimally invasive monitoring of disease progression and response to therapy.

The role of sphincteroplasty in the treatment of patients with fecal incontinence due to anal sphincter defects has been questioned because the success rate declines in the long-term.A new emerging treatment for fecal incontinence,sacral nerve stimulation,has been shown to be effective in these ***,the success rate of sphincteroplasty may depend of several patient-related and surgical-related factors and the outcome from sphincteroplasty has been evaluated differently(with qualitative data) from that after sacral nerve stimulation(quantitative data using scoring systems and quality of life).Furthermore,the data available so far on the longterm success rate after sacral nerve modulation do not differ substantially from those after *** actual data do not support the replacement of sphincteroplasty with sacral nerve stimulation in patients with fecal incontinence secondary to sphincter defects.

This paper deals with the homogenization of a class of nonlinear elliptic problems with quadratic growth in a periodically perforated domain. The authors prescribe a Dirichlet condition on the exterior boundary and a nonhomogeneous nonlinear Robin condition on the boundary of the holes. The main difficulty, when passing to the limit, is that the solution of the problems converges neither strongly in L^2(Ω) nor almost everywhere in Ω. A new convergence result involving nonlinear functions provides suitable weak convergence results which permit passing to the limit without using any extension ***, using a corrector result proved in [Chourabi, I. and donato, p., Homogenization and correctors of a class of elliptic problems in perforated domains, Asymptotic Analysis, 92(1), 2015, 1–43, DOI: 10.3233/ASY-151288], the authors describe the limit problem, presenting a limit nonlinearity which is different for the two cases, that of a Neumann datum with a nonzero average and with a zero average.

Bingham Flows in periodic Domains of Infinite Length

The Bingham fluid model has been successfully used in modeling a large class of non-Newtonian fluids. In this paper, the authors extend to the case of Bingham fluids the results previously obtained by Chipot and Mardare, who studied the asymptotics of the Stokes flow in a cylindrical domain that becomes unbounded in one direction, and prove the convergence of the solution to the Bingham problem in a finite periodic domain, to the solution of the Bingham problem in the infinite periodic domain, as the length of the finite domain goes to infinity. As a consequence of this convergence, the existence of a solution to a Bingham problem in the infinite periodic domain is obtained, and the uniqueness of the velocity field for this problem is also shown. Finally, they show that the error in approximating the velocity field in the infinite domain with the velocity in a periodic domain of length 2l has a polynomial decay in , unlike in the Stokes case （see [Chipot, M. and Mardare, S., Asymptotic behaviour of the Stokes problem in cylinders becoming unbounded in one direction, Journal de Mathgmatiques pures et Appliqudes, 90（2）, 2008, 133-159]） where it has an exponential decay. This is in itself an important result for the numerical simulations of non-Newtonian flows in long tubes.
