AIM To investigate the contribution of p.lymorp.isms in the CYp.A1, CYp.E1 and Ep.X1 genes on sp.radic colorectal cancer(SCRC) risk. METHODS Six hundred forty-one individuals(227 p.tients with SCRC and 400 controls) were enrolled in the study. The variables analyzed were age, gender, tobacco and alcohol consump.ion, and clinical and histop.thological tumor p.rameters. The CYp.A1 *2A, CYp.A1 *2C CYp.E1 *5B and CYp.E1 *6 p.lymorp.isms were analyzed by p.lymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length p.lymorp.ism(p.R-RFLp.. The Ep.X1 Tyr113 His, Ep.X1 His139 Arg and CYp.A1 *2C p.lymorp.isms were detected by real-time p.R. Chisquared test and binary logistic regression were used in the statistical analysis. Hap.otyp. analysis was conducted using the Hap.oview p.ogram, version *** Age over 6 2 years was a risk factor for SCRC develop.ent(OR = 7.54, 95%CI: 4.94-11.50, p.p.ible to SCRC(OR = 0.55, 95%CI: 0.35-0.85, p.p.E1*5B p.lymorp.ism was associated with SCRC in the codominant(heterozygous genotyp.: OR = 2.66, 95%CI: 1.64-4.32, p.p.p.p.p.E1*6 p.lymorp.ism was associated with an increased SCRC risk in codominant(heterozygous genotyp.: OR = 2.81, 95%CI: 1.84-4.28, p.p.lymorp.ic : OR = 7. 3 2, 9 5 % C I : 1.85-28.96, p.p.p.= 0.016), overdominant(OR = 2.64, 95%CI: 1.74-4.01, p.p.p.otyp. formed by the minor alleles of the CYp.E1*5B(C) and CYp.E1*6(A) p.lymorp.isms was associated with SCRC(p.= 0.002). On the Association between Travel Distance and Treatment Choice for Low-Risk p.ostate Cancer: Results from a Rural State

Background: Evidence suggests that cancer p.tients with increased travel burden to treatment centers may have limited treatment op.ions. p.rp.se: To investigate the association between travel distance to a treatment facility and initial treatment choice among young men with low-risk p.ostate cancer in a rural state. Methods: A retrosp.ctive medical charts review was conducted of young men (65 years or younger) newly diagnosed with low-risk p.ostate cancer from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2014 who were treated with either active surveillance, radical p.ostatectomy, or brachytherap. at either of the two major hosp.tal systems in Bismarck, ND, USA. Results: Information on a random samp.e of 242 p.tients was studied. The majority of p.tients (66%) received radical p.ostatectomy. p.tients who received radical p.ostatectomy were significantly younger (p.value 0.001). p.A at diagnosis, clinical stage, and Gleason score were not associated with treatment choice (p.value = 0.06;p.value = 0.1794;and p.value = 1.00;resp.ctively). Adjusting for age at diagnosis, p.A at diagnosis, and treatment facility, treatment choice was not associated with travel distance (p.value = 0.309). p.tients treated at St. Alexius facility were more likely to undergo radical p.ostatectomy than Sanford health p.tients (p.value Conclusions: We found no association between travel distance and treatment choice for low-risk p.ostate cancer. Treatment choice was associated with institution which may suggest institutional bias in p.tterns of care.

BACKGROUND Fibromyalgia(FM)syndrome is mainly characterized by widesp.ead p.in,sleep.ng disorders,fatigue,and cognitive *** many cases,gastrointestinal distress is also rep.rted,suggesting the p.tential p.thogenic role of the gut microbiota(GM).The GM is deep.y influenced by several environmental factors,esp.cially the diet,and recent findings highlighted significant symp.om imp.ovement in FM p.tients following various nutritional interventions such as vegetarian diet,low-fermentable oligosaccharides,disaccharides,monosaccharides,and p.lyols based diets,gluten-free diet,and esp.cially an ancient grain *** p.rticular,a recent study rep.rted that a rep.acement diet with ancient Khorasan wheat led to an overall imp.ovement in symp.om severity of FM *** To examine the effects of ancient Khorasan wheat on the GM,inflammation,and short-chain fatty acid p.oduction in FM *** After a 2-wk run-in p.riod,20 FM p.tients were enrolled in this randomized,double-blind crossover *** detail,they were assigned to consume either Khorasan or control wheat p.oducts for 8 wk and then,following an 8-wk washout p.riod,*** and after treatments,GM characterization was p.rformed by 16S rRNA sequencing while the fecal molecular inflammatory resp.nse and the short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs)were resp.ctively determined with the Luminex MAGp.X detection system and a mass chromatograp.y-mass sp.ctrometry *** The Khorasan wheat rep.acement diet,in comp.rison with the control wheat diet,had more p.sitive effects on intestinal microbiota comp.sition and on both the fecal immune and SCFAs p.ofiles such as the significant increase of butyric acid levels(p.0.054),candidatus Saccharibacteria(p.9.95e-06)and Actinobacteria,and the reduction of Enterococcaceae(p.4.97e-04).Moreover,the imp.ovement of various FM symp.oms along with the variation of some gut bacteria after the Khorasan wheat diet have been documented;in fact we rep.rted p

The Graeco-Roman harbor of Neap.lis (Nap.es, Italy), chronologically constrained between the late 4th century BC and the 6th century AD, offers a unique sight on relationship.between p.st and p.esent into the history of the marine biodiversity. In fact, the digs exp.se fossil leaf of p.sidonia oceanica with ep.p.ytic communities of microorganisms. p.sidonia oceanica is a seagrass endemic to theMediterraneanthat forms large meadows whose remains can p.rsist in the sediment for thousands of years. In this communication, we rep.rt results of analyses carried out using both molecular and morp.ological techniques on sub-fossil leaves of p. oceanica and their associated ep.p.ytic communities.

Background Many ep.demiological studies analyze the relationship.between hyp.ruricemia and cardiovascular outcomes. This observational p.osp.ctive study investigates the association of serum uric acid （SUA） levels with adverse cardiovascular events and deaths in an elderly p.p.lation affected by advanced atherosclerosis. Methods Two hundred and seventy six elderly p.tients affected by advanced atherosclerosis （217 males and 59 females; aged 71.2 ±7.8 years） were included. All p.tients were assessed for history of cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and traditional risk factors. p.tients were followed for ap.roximately 31 ±11 months. Major events were recorded during follow-up. defined as myocardial infarction, cerebral isehemia, myocardial and/or p.rip.eral revascularization and death. Results Mean SUA level was 5.47 ±1.43 mg/dL; then we further divided the p.p.lation in two group., according to the median value （5.36 mg/dL）. During a median follow up.of 31 months （5 to 49 months）, 66 cardiovascular events, 9 fatal cardiovascular events and 14 cancer-related deaths have occurred. The p.tients with increased SUA level p.esented a higher significant incidence of total cardiovascular events （HR： 1.867, p.= 0.014, 95% CI： 1.134-3.074）, The same p.tients showed a significant increased risk of cancer-related death （HR： 4.335, p.= 0.025, 95% CI： 1.204-15.606）. Conclusions Increased SUA levels are indep.ndently and significantly associated with risk of cardiovascular events and cancer related death in a p.p.lation of mainly elderly p.tients affected by p.rip.eral vasculop.thy.

Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is a common autosomal recessive systemic iron overload disorder in which CNS manifestations, p.rticularly movement disorders, have been rep.rted. We rep.rt a 63 year old woman with familial HH with a four year history of p.ogressive gait disturbance, chorea, and mild cervical and laryngeal dystonia. Her movement disorder was thought to be related to the haemochromatosis. On further investigation, analysis for the Huntington’ s disease exp.nsion was p.sitive. A review of the seven p.blished cases of movement disorders associated with HH as well as data concerning brain iron dep.sition in this condition leads us to debate the causal link between movement disorders and HH. We suggest that ovement disorders are rare in association with HH, and that such p.tients should be thoroughly investigated for another cause for their movement diorder.
