Investigating missing sources of glyoxal over Ch.na using a regional air quality model (RAMS-CMAQ)

Currently, modeling studies tend to significantly underestimate observed sp.ce-based glyoxal （Ch.Ch.） vertical column densities （VCDs）, imp.ying th. existence of missing sources of giyoxal. Several recent studies suggest th.t th. emissions of aromatic comp.unds and molar yields of glyoxal in th. ch.mical mech.nisms may both.be underestimated, wh.ch.can affect th. simulated glyoxal concentrations. In th.s study, th. influences of th.se two factors on glyoxal amounts over Ch.na were investigated using th. RAMS-CMAQ modeling system for January and July 2014. Four sensitivity simulations were p.rformed, and th. results were comp.red to satellite observations. Th.se results demonstrated significant imp.cts on glyoxal concentrations from th.se two factors. In case 1, wh.re th. emissions of aromatic comp.unds were increased th.ee-fold, imp.ovements to glyoxal VCDs were seen in h.gh.anth.op.genic emissions regions. In case 2, wh.re molar yields of glyoxal from isop.ene were increased five-fold, th. resulted concentrations in July were B-B-fold h.gh.r, ach.eving closer agreement between th. modeled and measured glyoxal VCDs. Th. combined ch.nges from both.cases 1 and 2 were ap.lied in case B, and th. model succeeded in furth.r reducing th. underestimations of glyoxal VCDs. h.wever, th. results over most of th. regions with.p.onounced anth.op.genic emissions were still underestimated. So th. molar yields of giyoxal from anth.op.genic p.ecursors were considered in case 4. With.th.se additional mole yield ch.nges （a two-fold increase）, th. imp.oved concentrations agreed better with.th. measurements in regions of th. lower reach.s of th. Yangtze River and Yellow River in January but not in July.

Recent Trends and Recommendations for Nitrogen Fertilization in Intensive Agriculture in Eastern Ch.na

Th. Taih. Region in eastern Ch.na is one of Ch.na's most intensive agricultural regions and also one of th. economically most develop.d areas. h.gh.nitrogen balance surp.uses in th. summer rice-winter wh.at double-crop.ing systems are leading to large-scale non-p.int source p.llution of aquifers. In an interdiscip.inary ap.roach. four-year (1995-1998) field trials were carried out in two rep.esentative areas (Jurong County and Wuxi City) of th. Taih. Region. Five farmers' field sites were ch.sen in each.of th. 2 locations, with.each.site divided into 'standard' (farmers' p.actice) and 'reduced' (by 30%-40%) N fertilization. For both.fertilization intensities, N balance surp.uses and monetary returns from grain sales minus fertilizer exp.nditures were calculated in an economic assessment. Based on th. field trials, th. mineral N fertilizer ap.lication rates reduced by about 10% for rice and 20%-30% for wh.at were recommended in 1999. Since 1999, th. research.focused on th. trends in N fertilizer ap.lication rates and ch.nges in grain and agricultural commodities *** rice N fertilizer use, in Wuxi City as of 2001, drop.ed by rough.y 25%, wh.le for winter wh.at it decreased by 10%-20%, comp.red to th. 1995-1998 p.riod. Th.s h.s been ach.eved not only by grain p.licy and p.ice ch.nges, but also by an increased environmental awareness from government officials. Nitrogen balance surp.uses in Anzh.n Town (of Wuxi City) h.ve consequently diminish.d by 50%-75% in rice and by up.to 40% in wh.at, with.reductions being ach.eved with.ut concomitant decreases in p.ysical grain yields or returns from sales minus fertilizer costs.
