Guided modes in a hollow optical fiber are investigated using both scalar approximation and exact vectorial analysis. Effective indices of modes are seen to exhibit "nearly degenerate" groups. Besides providing an insight of modal characteristics, the analysis would prove to be useful to define design parameters for realizing components based on these fibers, and to explore new possibilities.

Effect of sharing health messages on antenatal care behavior among women involved in microfinance-based self-help groups in Bihar India

Background and Objective: Leukemic microenvironment has a major role in the progression of leukemia. Leukemic cells can induce reversible changes in microenvironmental components, especially the stromal function which results in improved growth conditions for maintaining the malignant leukemic cells. This study aimed to investigate the survival advantage of leukemic cells over normal hematopoietic cells in stromal microenvironment in long term. Methods: The mice were injected intraperitoneally with N-N’ ethylnitrosourea (ENU) to induce leukemia; the mice received injection of normal saline were used as control. At 180 days after ENU induction, the mice were killed and the bone marrows were cultured for 19 days. Colony-forming assays were used to analyze the formation of various cell colonies. The expression of Sca-1, CD146, VEGFR2, CD95, pStat3, pStat5, and Bcl-xL in marrow cells were detected by flow cytometry. Results: Long-term leukemic bone marrow culture showed abnormal elongated stromal fibroblasts with almost absence of normal hematopoietic cells. Adherent cell colonies were increased, but CFU-F and other hematopoietic cell colonies were significantly decreased in leukemia group (pprimitive progenitor-specific Sca-1 receptor expression was decreased with subsequent increased expression of CD146 and VEGFR-2 in leukemic bone marrow cells. Decreased Fas antigen expression with increased intracellular pStat3, pStat5 and Bcl-xL proteins were observed in leukemic bone marrow cells. Conclusions: Stromal microenvironment shows altered morphology and decreased maturation in leukemia. Effective progenitor cells are decreased in leukemia with increased leukemia-specific cell population. Leukemic microenvironment plays a role in promoting and maintaining the leukemic cell proliferation and survivability in long term.

The present work involves an extensive analytical and toxicological description of a recently identified mixed halogenated carbazole found in sediment samples,1,8-dibromo-3,6-dichloro-9H-carbazole(BCCZ).Concentrations and the relative effect potency(REp)were calculated for the target BCCZ in a set of stream sediments collected in 2008 in Ontario,*** levels calculated for BCCZ as compared to those previously assessed for legacy persistent organic pollutants(pOps)in the same samples revealed a significant contribution of BCCZ to the total organic chemical contamination(ponding dioxin toxic equivalencies(TEQs)of BCCZ in the sediment extracts were estimated from experimental REp *** experimental data presented supports the classification of this emerging halogenated chemical as a contaminant of emerging environmental *** potential emission sources could not be identified,this study highlights the importance of on-going research for complete characterization of halogenated carbazoles and related compounds.

purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implant in refra ctory glaucomas in Indian eyes. Materials and methods: A retrospective review wa s conducted on the charts of 122 eyes of 122 patients with refractory glaucoma t reated with Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implant placement at Guru Nanak Eye Centre, New Delhi between January 1996 and December 1999. The main outcome measure was success at the last follow-up. Suc cess was defined as an intraocular pressure (IOp) of 22 mmHg or less and 5 mmHg or more and at least a 30%reduction in IOp without visually devastating complic ations or additional glaucoma surgery. Results: The mean postoperative IOp (17.2 9 ±.3.79 mmHg) was significantly (p preoperative I Op (31.47 ±7.86 mmHg) at last follow up (mean 12.51 ±.8.37 months; range 3-24 months). The cumulative probability of success by Kaplan Meier analysis was 85. 95%at 12 months and 82.83%at 24 months. The mean number of postoperative antig laucoma medications (0.75 ±.0.80) was also significantly lower (ppreoperative number of antiglaucoma medications (2.83±0.72). The most common complication was corneal-tube contact, which occurred in five (4.10%) e yes. Retinal detachment occurred postoperatively in one eye with the clinical di agnosis of neovascular glaucoma secondary to Eale’s disease. Two patients had t ube extrusion requiring repositioning and reinforcement with scleral patch graft . Conclusions: Ahmed Glaucoma Valve implantation is an effective and relatively safe therapy for the treatment of refractory glaucoma in Indians.

Background: Vitamin D is not only important for bone health but can also affect the development of several non-bone diseases. These findings have increased the need for determining vitamin D status in a convenient and cost-effective way. In order to determine the better method for detecting vitamin D status, we have estimated blood vitamin D in three methods such as high-pressure liquid chromatography, chemiluminescent immunoassays and enzyme immunoassays. Method: Two hundred and sixteen subjects irrespective of age and sex were studied for blood vitamin D in all the three methods over a period of 2 years.
