Performance-b.sed design in earthquake engineering is a structural optimization prob.em that has, as the ob.ective, the determination of design parameters for the minimization of total costs, while at the same time satisfying minimum reliab.lity levels for the specifi ed performance criteria. Total costs include those for construction and structural damage repairs, those associated with non-structural components and the social costs of economic losses, injuries and fatalities. This paper presents a general framework to approach this prob.em, using a numerical optimization strategy and incorporating the use of neural networks for the evaluation of dynamic responses and the reliab.lity levels achieved for a given set of design parameters. The strategy is applied to an example of a three-story offi ce b.ilding. The results show the importance of considering the social costs, and the optimum failure prob.b.lities when minimum reliab.lity constraints are not taken into account.

Late Middle Triassic to early Late Triassic insects from Argentina have b.en previously describ.d from the b.rmejo and Cuyana b.sins where they have b.en recovered from the Ischichuca-Los rastros and Potrerillos-Cacheuta Formations, respectively. The insect fauna discussed herein was collected during field studies in 1986/1987 from the Llantenes section （Norian to Rhaetian？ Late Triassic）, which is situated in the Malargiie b.sin in southern Mendoza province. The insect remains were found in the upper part of the Llantenes section （Llantenes Formation）, which is b.ilt up of two coarsening-upwards cycles reflecting a deltaic progradation of a fluvial into a lacustrine environment （lower part）, succeeded b. repeated progradatious into a floodplaindominated environment （upper part; with finds of insects, conchostracans, fish remains, plant fragments, and drifted logs）. The new finds represent the youngest Triassic insect records describ.d from Argentina and even from South America in its entirety. There is only one contemporaneous fossil assemb.age in Gondwana： in the Ciarence/Moreton b.sin （Ab.rdare Conglomerate; Late Norian） in Australia. The new Triassic insects include an impression of an isolated Mecopterida-like wing （Mendozachorista volkheimeri gen. et sp. nov.; Mendozachoristidae fam. nov.）, coleopteran elytra of the Permosynidae （Ademosyne rosenfeldi sp. nov. and Ademosyne Uantenesensis sp. nov.） and other isolated b.dy fragments. This new Late Triassic entomofauna from Argentina is of considerab.e importance in the reconstruction of the b.otic recovery of continental environments in Gondwana after the catastrophic mass extinction at the P/T b.undary.

The Level of Expression of Thioredoxin is Linked to Fundamental Properties and Applications of Wheat Seeds

Work with cereals （b.rley and wheat） and a legume （Medicago truncatula） has estab.ished thioredoxin h （Trx h） as a central regulatory protein of seeds. Trx h acts b. reducing disulfide （S-S） groups of diverse seed proteins （storage proteins, enzymes, and enzyme inhib.tors）, thereb. facilitating germination. Early in vitro protein studies were complemented with experiments in which b.rley seeds with Trx h overexpressed in the endosperm showed accelerated germination and early or enhanced expression of associated enzymes （α-amylase and pullulanase）. The current study extends the transgenic work to wheat. Two approaches were followed to alter the expression of Trx h genes in the endosperm：（1） a hordein promoter and its protein b.dy targeting sequence led to overexpression of Trx hS, and （2） an antisense construct of Trx h9 resulted in cytosolic underexpression of that gene （Arab.dopsis designation）. Underexpression of Trx h9 led to effects opposite to those ob.erved for overexpression Trx h5 in b.rley--retardation of germination and delayed or reduced expression of associated enzymes. Similar enzyme changes were ob.erved in developing seeds. The wheat lines with underexpressed Trx showed delayed preharvest sprouting when grown in the greenhouse or field without a decrease in final yield. Wheat with overexpressed Trx h5 showed changes commensurate with earlier in vitro work： increased solub.lity of disulfide proteins and lower aUergenicity of the gliadin fraction. The results are further evidence that the level of Trx h in cereal endosperm determines fundamental properties as well as potential applications of the seed.

Scale dependency of Liolaemus lizards＇ home range in response to different environmental variab.es

Animal hab.tat-use patterns cannot b. isolated from scale issues. Consequently, multi-scale studies provide a complete characterization of ecological patterns that can further explain the ob.erved variation. Liolaemus constitutes the world＇s second most speciose lizard genus. In this study, we assessed the relationships b.tween home range size and environmental variab.es at 3 different spatial scales. The study at a local and regional scale was focused on the hab.tat specialist Liolaemus multimaculatus. The lizard＇s home range was calculated using the minimum convex polygon method in populations from grassland sites of the coastal sand dunes of the Argentinean Pampas under 2 different conditions, with or without forestations of Acacia Iongifolia. On the other hand, at a geographical scale we considered the evolutionary implications of 20 species of Liolaemus. Home range size, phylogeny, ecological, environmental, and climatic data were ob. tained from the literature and remote sensing. L. multimaculatus home range varied from 12.66 to 570.00 m. Regionally, this species had smaller home ranges in forested hab.tats （X： 94.02 m2） com- pared with the non-forested sites （X： 219.78m2）. Hab.tat structure, vegetation types, and food availab.lity would explain the space use at finer scales. When the 20 species of Liolaernus were considered, high mean air temperature and b.oad thermal amplitudes showed an inverse relationship with home range size. Neither net primary productivity nor phylogeny was good predictors for home range variation at geographical scale. This study highlights the scale dependence of the explicative capab.lity of a set of environmental and intrinsic variab.es on home range patterns.
