Anthropogenic stressors can favor the occurrence of noninfectious disease that can be worsened by the impact of opportunistic pathogens,making the epizootiology of environmental diseases difficult to *** incidence and impact of oral lesions in nestlings of a facultative scavenger species,the black kite Milvus migrans,were examined over seven breeding seasons in the highly degraded environment close to Madrid,*** found an overall prevalence of 31%of nestlings with oral lesions,with no clear spatial pattern in nests with affected and unaffected *** occurrence and number of oral lesions were negatively associated with nestling body condition and brood ***,where all siblings had oral lesions,were smaller than those where some or all siblings were apparently healthy,suggesting that oral disease could be causing nestling mortality and,consequently,brood size *** turn,nestling body condition was negatively affected by lesion occurrence,brood size,and laying *** these relationships were bidirectional,piecewise structural equation modeling analyses showed a greater negative effect of body condition on lesion occurrence than vice versa,indicating that nestlings in poorer body condition were more likely to develop oral lesions(which could contribute to aggravate their state of deterioration)than those in better *** from small broods were also more likely to have oral disease(directly or indirectly through their lower body condition)than nestlings from large *** that hatched last in the broods showed greater development stress than those that hatched *** stressors could trigger poor body condition,and contribute to microbiota dysbiosis-related *** further research is needed to determine the consequences for the long-term fitness of individuals,actions should be taken to mitigate adverse conditions that may favor the appearance of environmental diseases associatedwithpe

Construction of aboveground biomass models with remote sensing technology in the intertropical zone in Mexico

Spatially-explicit estimation of aboveground biomass （AGB） plays an important role to generate action policies focused in climate change mitigation, since carbon （C） retained in the biomass is vital for regulating Earth＇s temperature. This work estimates AGB using both chlorophyll （red, near infrared） and moisture （middle infrared） based normalized vegetation indices constructed with MCD43A4 MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer （MODIS） and MOD44B vegetation continuous fields （VCF） data. The study area is located in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, a region that comprises a part of the upper limit of the intertropical zone. AGB estimations were made using both individual tree data from the National Forest Inventory of Mexico and allometric equations reported in scientific literature. Linear and nonlinear （expo- nential） models were fitted to find their predictive potential when using satellite spectral data as explanatory variables. Highly-significant correlations （p = 0.01 ） were found between all the explaining variables tested. NDVI62, linked to chlorophyll content and moisture stress, showed the highest correlation. The best model （nonlinear） showed an index of fit （Pseudo - r2） equal to 0.77 and a root mean square error equal to 26.00 Mg/ha using NDVI62 and VCF as explanatory variables. Validation correlation coefficients were similar for both models： linear （r = 0.87＊＊） and nonlinear （r = 0.86＊＊）.

Use of Probiotic Yogurt in the Management of Acute Diarrhoea in Children. Randomized, Double-Blind, Controlled Study

Background: In Bolivia there are few probiotic preparations available in the market, practically without alternatives to the use of freeze-dried products. An alternative used as a good alternative in other parts of the world is yogurt with a probiotic strain added. In this study we report the use of a locally prepared yogurt with a lyophilized probiotic added. Methods: This is randomized, double-blind and controlled clinical trial in children hospitalized with acute diarrhoea carried out at the Paediatric Centre Albina Pati?o in Cochabamba, Bolivia with children 10 to 35 months participating. Children were randomly assigned to receive an oral rehydration solution and Saccharomyces boulardii (positive control) or the same solution plus yogurt preparation containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus (yogurt group). The primary outcome was the duration of diarrhoea. Secondary outcomes were the duration of fever, vomiting and hospitalization. Results: Of the 74 children incorporated 42 completed the protocol;baseline characteristics were similar in both groups. The median duration of diarrhoea was similar in children who received yogurt (71 hours) and controls (79 hours) (p = 0.3). The mean duration of fever was also similar in both groups: S. boulardii (24 hours) or yogurt (11 hours) (p = 1.02), as was the duration of vomiting: 17 hours vs. 32 hours in the control group (p = 0.37). A significant difference in the numbers of daily bowel movements was observed in the third day, the probiotic group was lower (p = 0.01). There was no effect on the duration of hospitalization (p = 0.26). Conclusions: The use of a yogurt containing L. rhamnosus has an effect comparable to S. boulardii. Introduction of yoghurt with a probiotic in the diet of patients hospitalized with acute diarrhoea may help reduce its duration, regardless of its aetiology.

An important limitation for the success of chemotherapy in the treatment of primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma,hepatoblastoma and cholangiocarcinoma) is the marked efficacy of mechanisms of chemoresistance (MOC).These have been previously classified into five groups depending on whether they result in:a reduced drug uptake or enhanced drug export (MOC-1);poor intracellular activation of prodrugs or higher inactivation of active drugs (MOC-2);changes in the molecular targets that impairs the action of the drug by increasing the activity of the metabolic route to be inhibited or stimulating alternative routes (MOC-3);ability of tumor cells to repair drug-induced modifications in the target molecule,usually DNA (MOC-4);and the activation or inhibition of intracellular signaling pathways that lead to a change in the balance between proand anti-apoptotic factors favoring tumor cell survival (MOC-5).Nevertheless,novel information appeared over the last few years has recommended to consider two additional groups,MOC-6 and MOC-7,based on changes in tumor microenvironment,mainly hypoxia and acidity,and epithelial-mesenchymal transition,*** contribute to the defensive armamentaria developed or enhanced in liver cancer cells to resist the pharmacological attack,which accounts for a negligible beneficial effect of commonly used antitumor drugs and only a modest response to novel targeted therapies based on tyrosine kinase inhibitors,such as ***,further advances are urgently needed to better understand the molecular and cellular bases of the chemoresistant barrier and help scientists in this field to develop new tools able to overcome cancer cell defenses.

Is there a place for optimizing thoracic radiotherapy in limited-stage small cell lung cancer after twenty years?

Thoracic radiotherapy(TRT)is one of the main treatments in limited-stage small cell lung cancer(LS-SCLC).Hyperfractionated TRT(45 Gy,1.5 Gy twice daily)has been the standard of care(SOC)since Turrisi and colleagues published the results of their clinical trial in *** meta-analyses have demonstrated the benefits of concurrent chemotherapy and TRT in terms of intrathoracic disease control at 2 years and 3-year overall survival(OS).The phase 2 trial by Grønberg et al(2016)comparing once-daily hypofractionated TRT to twice-daily hyperfractionated TRT in LS-SCLC found similar outcomes in both groups in terms of response rate,progression-free survival(PFS),grade 3-4 adverse effects,and *** CONVERT trial,published in 2017,failed to demonstrate the superiority of the conventional scheme(once-daily TRT)vs twice-daily radiotherapy,despite the application of modern radiotherapy techniques and a quality assurance programme,thus confirming the twice-daily hyperfractionated regimen as the *** the 2020 American Society of Clinical Oncology(ASCO)annual meeting,Grønberg et al reported preliminary findings from a phase 2 trial comparing two different TRT dose regimens(45 Gy vs 60 Gy),both administered twice *** data demonstrated a marked improvement in 2-year survival rates in the high dose arm(70.2%vs 46.1%,P=0.002),despite similar objective response rates and PFS *** findings provide a new treatment alternative to consider:Hyperfractionated,high-dose ***,the results of that trial will need to be validated in a large,randomized phase 3 *** results of the phase 2 CALCG 30610 trial will help to clarify the optimal dose and *** potential role of upfront immunotherapy,which early data suggest may improve OS,also needs to be determined.

Efficient Techniques and Algorithms for Improving Indoor Localization Precision on WLAN Networks Applications

This paper proposes efficient techniques that allow the deploying of high precision location applications for indoor scenarios over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). Firstly, we compare the use of radio frequency (RF) power levels and relative time delays based on ray-tracing as detection methods to estimate the localization of a set of mobile station using the fingerprint technique. Detection method play an important role in applications of high frequencies techniques for locations systems based on current and emerging standards such as Wi-Fi (802.11x) and Wi-Max (802.16x). The localization algorithm computes the Eucli- dean distance between the samples of signals received from each unknown position and each fingerprint stored in the database or radio-map obtained using the FASPRI simulation tool. Experimental results show that more precision can be obtained in the localization process by means of relative delay instead of RF power detection method. Secondly, the Euclidean distance has been compared with others similarity distance measures. Finally, an interpolation algorithm between the fingerprinting weighing based on the distances has been implemented in order to eliminate those fingerprints that do not contribute to the improvement in the accuracy. These techniques allow obtaining more precision in the localization of indoor mobile devices over WLAN networks.

A Reward Functional to Solve the Replacement Problem

The replacement problem can be modeled as a finite, irreducible, homogeneous Markov Chain. In our proposal the problem was modeled using a Markov decision process and then, the instance was optimized using dynamic programming. We proposed a new functional that includes a reward functional, that can be more helpful in processing industries because it considerate instances like incomes, maintenance costs, fixed costs to replace equipment, purchase price and salvage values;and this functional can be solved with dynamic programming and used to make effective decisions. Two theorems are proved related with this new functional. A numerical example is presented in order to demonstrate the utility of this proposal.
