The East Sea(Sea of Japan)is a marginal,semi-closed sea in the northwestern *** Ulleung Basin area,which is located near the subpolar front of the East Sea,is known to have high primary production and good fisheries in spring *** episodic wind-driven events during the spring of 2017,horizontal and vertical profiles of physical chemical biological factors were investigated at 29 stations located in the Ulleung Basin *** addition,growth responses of phytoplankton communities to nutrient additions were evaluated by bioassay experiments to understand the fluctuation of phytoplankton *** of strong northwestern wind,phytoplankton biomass was scattered and upwelling phenomenon might be suppressed in this *** phytoplankton abundances in the coastal stations were significantly higher than offshore and island *** contrast,the nutrient and chlorophyll a(Chl a)concentrations and the phytoplankton biomass were quite low in all *** was dominated group(>75.1%for coastal,40.0%for offshore and 43.6%for island stations).In the algal bioassays,the phytoplankton production was stimulated by N *** in vivo Chl a values in the+N and+NP treatments were significantly higher than the values in the control and the+P *** on the field survey,the higher nutrients in coastal waters affected the growth of diatom assemblages,however,little prosperity of phytoplankton was observed in the offshore waters despite the injection of sufficient nutrients in bioassay *** growth of phytoplankton depended on the initial cell *** of results indicated that a dominant northwestern wind led to a limited nutrients condition at euphotic layers,and the low level of biomass supply from the coasts resulted in low primary *** supplying nutrients and introducing phytoplankton through the currents are critical to maintain the high productivity in the Ulleung Basin area of the East Sea.

BACKGROUNDEwing’s sarcoma is a highly malignant primary bone tumor that commonly affectschildren. For young patients, multidisciplinary treatment and limb salvage arerecommended, and surgical plans considering the growth potential and boneactivity after tumor resection are *** SUmmARyAn 11-year-old Asian boy had a 1-mo history of a right-sided limping *** revealed a proximal tumor with bone destruction and physealinvolvement over the right femoral neck. He was diagnosed with stage IV(T1N0m1aG3) Ewing’s sarcoma with bilateral lung metastases. Neoadjuvantchemotherapy decreased the tumor size and confined it to the metaphysealregion. The patient underwent four stages of surgery: wide tumor excision plusreconstruction with vascular fibular bone graft plus internal fixation;repeat openreduction and internal fixation;femoral lengthening with orthosis after physealmaturity;and orthosis removal and bone elongation (approximately 6 cm).Following surgery, he could walk without discomfort and had almost equal-sizedbilateral femoral heads, indicating physis preservation. The surgery wassuccessful, and normal femoral head growth was achieved after completeremission. The patient was able to resume normal activities with equal length ofthe bilateral lower *** treatment and reconstruction following resection are important in skeletally immature patients with Ewing’s sarcoma to improve quality of life.

Animal models to study mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV co-infection

mycobacterium tuberculosis(***) and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) co-infection has become a public health issue worldwide. Up to now, there have been many unresolved issues either in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of ***/HIV coinfection or in the basic understanding of the mechanisms for the impairments to the immune system by interactions of these two pathogens. One important reason for these unsolved issues is the lack of appropriate animal models for the study of ***/HIV coinfection. This paper reviews the recent development of research on the animal models of ***/HIV co-infection, with a focus on the non-human primate models.

Effect of molybdenum on interfacial properties of titanium carbide reinforced Fe composite

This study shows that the mechanical strength of the composite of Fe matrix and titanium carbide(Ti C)ceramic particles is significantly enhanced with addition of molybdenum(mo) atoms. Ti C reinforced Fe(Fe-0.2C-7mn) composites with and without mo were fabricated by a liquid pressing infiltration(LPI)process and the effect of mo on interfacial properties of TiC–Fe composite was investigated using atomic probe tomography(APT) analysis, molecular dynamics(mD) simulations, first-principle density functional theory(DFT), and thermodynamic calculations. First, DFT calculations showed that total energies of the mo-doped Ti C–Fe superlattices strongly depend on the position of mo defects, and are minimized when the mo atom is located at the TiC/Fe interface, supporting the probable formation of moC-like interphase at the TiC/Fe interface region. Then, APT analysis confirmed the DFT predictions by finding that about6.5 wt.% mo is incorporated in the Ti C–Fe(mo) composite and that sub-micrometer thick(Ti,mo)C interphase is indeed formed near the interface. The mD simulations show that mo atoms migrate to the mo-free TiC–Fe interface at elevated temperatures and the mechanical strength of the interface is considerably enhanced, which is in good agreement with experimental observations.

The usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging in detection of diffuse axonal injury in a patient with head trauma

Diffuse axonal injury is the predominant mechanism of injuries in patients with traumatic brain injury. Neither conventional brain computed tomography nor magnetic resonance imaging has shown sufficient sensitivity in the diagnosis of diffuse axonal injury. In the current study, we attempted to demonstrate the usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging in the detection of lesion sites of diffuse axonal injury in a patient with head trauma who had been misdiagnosed as having a stroke. A 44-year-old man fell from a height of about 2 m. Brain magnetic resonance imaging （32 months after onset） showed leukomalactic lesions in the isthmus of the corpus callosum and the left temporal lobe. He presented with mild quadriparesis, intentional tremor of both hands, and trunkal ataxia. From diffusion tensor imaging results of 33 months after traumatic brain injury onset, we found diffuse axonal injury in the right corticospinal tract （centrum semiovale, pons）, both fomices （columns and crus）, and both inferior cerebellar peduncles （cerebellar portions）. We think that diffusion tensor imaging could be a useful tool in the detection of lesion sites of diffuse axonal injury in patients with head trauma.

Exposure to radiation causes DNA damage;hence, continuous surveillance and timely DNA repair are important for genome stability. Epigenetic modifications alter the chromatin architecture, thereby affecting the efficiency of DNA repair. however, how epigenetic modifiers coordinate with the DNA repair machinery to modulate cellular radiosensitivity is relatively unknown. Here, we report that loss of the demethylase ribosomal oxygenase 1(RIOX1) restores cell proliferation and reduces cell death after exposure to ionizing radiation. Furthermore, RIOX1 depletion enhances homologous recombination(HR) repair but not nonhomologous endjoining(NHEJ) repair in irradiated bone marrow cells and oral mucosal epithelial cells. mechanistic study demonstrates that RIOX1 removes monomethylation at K491 of cyclic GmP-AmP synthase(c GAS) to release c GAS from its interaction with the methyl-lysine reader protein SAGA complex-associated factor 29(SGF29), which subsequently enables c GAS to interact with poly(ADP-ribosyl)ated poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1(PARP1) at DNA break sites, thereby blocking PARP1-mediated recruitment of Timeless. High expression of RIOX1 maintains c GAS K491 me at a low level, which impedes HR repair and reduces cellular tolerance to ionizing radiation. This study highlights a novel RIOX1-dependent mechanism involved in the non-immune function of c GAS that is essential for the regulation of ionizing radiation-elicited HR repair.

Efficacy of the herbal pair, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae and Eucommiae Cortex, in preventing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in the zebrafish model

Objective: In traditional Chinese medicine, the herbal pair, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae(RAB) and Eucommiae Cortex(EC), is widely used to treat osteoporosis. Herein, we determined whether this herbal pair can be used to ameliorate glucocorticoid(GC)-induced osteoporosis(GIOP) and find its optimal dosage in ***: The characteristics of the aqueous extract of RAB and EC were separately characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography. Osteoporosis was induced in 5-day post-fertilization zebrafish larvae by exposing them to 10 lmol/L dexamethasone(Dex) for 96 h. Seven combinations of different ratios of RAB and EC were co-administered. Treatment efficacy was determined by calculating zebrafish vertebral area and sum brightness, via alizarin red staining, and by detecting alkaline phosphatase(ALP)activity. multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the optimal dosage ***: According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2015), b-ecdysone(b-Ecd) is a major bioactive marker in RAB extract, while pinoresinol diglucoside(PDG) is the major marker in EC extract. Both of b-Ecd and PDG content values aligned with the Chinese Pharmacopoeia standards. Treatment with 10 lmol/L Dex reduced zebrafish vertebral area, sum brightness, and ALP activity, but RAB and EC attenuated these effects. Combining 50 mg/m L RAB and 50 mg/m L EC was optimal for preventing GIOP in *** transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to evaluate the m RNA expression of osteogenesis-related genes. A treatment of 10 lmol/L Dex decreased runt-related transcription factor 2(Runx2), osteogenic protein-1(OP-1), bone c-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein(BGLAP), and bcatenin levels. High resolution aerosol optical thickness retrieval over the Pearl River Delta region with improved aerosol modelling

Aerosol retrieval algorithms for the mODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (mODIS) have been developed to estimate aerosol and microphysical properties of the atmosphere, which help to address aerosol climatic issues at global scale. however, higher spatial resolution aerosol products for urban areas have not been well researched mainly due to the difficulty of differentiating aerosols from bright surfaces in urban areas. Here, a new aerosol retrieval algorithm using the mODIS 500 m resolution images is described, to retrieve aerosol properties over hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region. The rationale of our technique is to first estimate the aerosol reflectance by decomposing the top-of-atmosphere reflectance from surface reflectance and Rayleigh path reflectance. For the determination of surface reflectance, a modified minimum Reflectance Technique (mRT) is used, and mRT images are computed for different seasons. A strong correlation is shown between the surface reflectance of mRT images and mODIS land surface reflectance products (mOD09), with a value of 0.9. For conversion of aerosol reflectance to Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT), comprehensive Look Up Tables (LUT) are constructed, in which aerosol properties and sun-viewing geometry in the radiative transfer calculations are taken into account. Four aerosol types, namely mixed urban, polluted urban, dust, and heavy pollution, were derived using cluster analysis on three years of AERONET measurements in hong Kong. Their aerosol properties were input for LUT calculation. The resulting 500 m AOT images are highly correlated (r = 0.89) with AERONET sunphotometer observations in hong Kong. This study demonstrates the applicability of aerosol retrieval at fine resolution scale in urban areas, which can assist the study of aerosol loading distribution and the impact of localized and transient pollution on urban air quality.
