Pathophysiological changes in human patients and in animal models of infection or inflammation are associated with alterations in the production of numerous liver-derived proteins including metabolizing enzymes. In this study, the effects of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA) in rats on the levels of mRNA and activity of hepatic xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes were determined during the inflammatory response. The mRNA levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2, CYP2C12, CYP2D1, CYP2D2, and CYP3A1 were significantly decreased compared with control levels in almost all phases of inflammation. A reduction in the activity of CYP2C and CYP3A, which are abundantly expressed in the liver, was also observed. For phase II metabolizing enzymes, mRNA levels of uridine 5’-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1, UGT1A6, sulfotransferase (SULT) 2A1, and glutathione S-transferase 2 were significantly decreased compared with control levels. However, the mRNA levels of UGT2B and SULT1A1 returned to control levels during the subacute (7 d after adjuvant treatment) and chronic (21 d after adjuvant treatment) phases although these levels decreased during the acute (3 d after adjuvant treatment) phase. These results suggest that the effects of inflammation on the expression of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes differ depending on the isoform of the enzyme and could affect the pharmacokinetics of each substrate.

Measurement of uronic acids (URAs) which are a group of acidic sugar, would be useful for the understanding of dynamics of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in marine environments. However, the URA analysis using traditional hydrolysis method which is used for neutral sugar analysis poses serious problems in URA that is unstable under hydrolysis. We developed the methanolysis method, which deploymerizes polysaccharides while retaining quantitative information. Our method was applied to coastal seawater, and the URAs distribution was compared with that of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) which are acidic sugar containing particles. Since the relationship of URA with TEP was relatively weak, URA-containing polysaccharides present in bacterial EPS would not participate as a structural component of TEP.

A Teaching Experiment in Modelling through Scale Reduction Methods： A Bridge to Later Trigonometric Methods

The symmetry energy of neutron-rich nuclei is one of the hottest topics in nuclear physics[1,2].Depending both on temperature and density,the symmetry energy of nuclear matter is still not well defined theoretically,and it is also difficult to be measured *** the cross section of fragments produced in heavy ion reactions,the symmetry energy of neutron-rich nuclei can be extracted in the framework of modified fisher model(MFM)[1].In this report we calculated the fragment yield in the 140 A MeV Ni+Be projectile fragmentation using antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(AMD) model with a statistical decay code, GEMINI as an afterburner[3-5].Isobaric yield ratios in the reaction are analyzed and the symmetry energy coefficients relative to the temperature(a/T) of the emitting source are obtained as a function of mass of the neutron-rich *** extracted a/T of fragments is compared to those of the experimental results[6].

In a teaching experiment, Japanese Grade 9 students investigated how to measure the height of an aerial balloon using different models involving angles and distances, and also to evaluate the models they developed. As novices to mathematical modelling, they needed to decide which of several possible models were both valid and practicable, and the errors in measurement that are likely to arise. Opportunities to construct and use paper models, as scale reductions of the real situation, and discussing their results in small groups were effective in moving forward the thinking of many students on the dimensions mentioned above. While students were less able to identify different sources of errors, many came to appreciate the need to learn trigonometric techniques that are more suitable in dealing with problems of this kind.

AIM： To examine the effects of adiponectin on the functions of Kupffer cells, key modulators of lipopolysaccharide （LPS） -induced liver ***： D-galactosamine （GAIN） and LPS were injected intraperitoneally into adiponectin-/- mice and wild type mice. Kupffer cells, isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats, were preincubated with or without adiponectin, and then treated with ***： In knockout mice, GalN/LPS injection significantly lowered the survival rate, significantly raised the plasma levels of alanine transaminase and tumor necrosis factor-α （TNF-α） and significantly reduced IL-10 levels compared with wild type mice. TNF-α gene expression in the liver was which higher and those of IL-10 were lower in knockout mice than in wild type mice. In cultured adiponectin-pre-treated Kupffer cells, LPS significantly lowered TNF-α levels and raised IL-10 levels in the culture media and their respective gene expression levels, compared with Kupffer cells without ***： Adiponectin supresses TNF-α production and induces IL-10 production by Kupffer cells in response to LPS stimulation, and a lack of adiponectin enhances LPS-induced liver injury.

AIM:To investigate whether fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusion affects outcomes following hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in terms of liver function,postoperative complications and cancer ***:We retrospectively compared the incidence of postoperative complications between 204 patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC with routine FFP transfusion in an early period (1983-1993,Group A) and 293 with necessity for FFP transfusion during a later period (1998-2006,Group B),and also between two subgroups of Group B [22 patients with FFP transfusion (Group B1) and 275 patients without FFP transfusion (Group B2)].Additionally,only in limited patients in Group B1 and Group B2 with intraoperative blood loss≥ 2000 mL (Group B1 ≥ 2000 mL and Group B2 ≥ 2000 mL),postoperative complications,liver function tests,and cancer prognosis were ***:No mortality was registered in Group B,compared to 8 patients (3.9%) of Group *** incidence of morbidity in Group B2 [23.2% (64/275)] was not significantly different from Group B1 [40.9% (9/22)] and Group A [27.0% (55/204)].The incidence of complications and postoperative liver function tests were comparable between Group B1 ≥ 2000 mL vs Group B2 ≥ 2000 *** prognosis did not correlate with administration of FFP,but with tumor-related ***:The outcome of hepatectomy for HCC is not influenced by FFP *** suggest FFP transfusion be abandoned in patients who undergo hepatectomy for HCC.

We review the research and development of beyond Pb/s capacity space-division-multiplexed transmission technology using multi-core optical fibers for satisfying the ever-increasing traffic demand. Moreover, we present an optical packet and circuit integrated network technology to improve switching capacity and flexibility in network nodes for the rapid traffic fluctuation and the data service diversification.
