Effect of silver-nanoparticles generated in poly(vinyl alcohol)membranes on ethanol dehydration via pervaporation

Pervaporation is an important membrane separation method of chemical *** this work,silver-nanoparticles-poly(vinyl alcohol)nanocomposite membranes(AgNPs-PVA)are produced for the sake of improving its potentials for pervaporation of ethanol–water mixture so that the usual opposite trend between membrane selectivity and permeation can be *** nanocomposite membranes are fabricated from an aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol)with silver nanoparticles via the in-situ generation technique in the absence of any reducing *** generation of the nano size silver is measured by the UV–vis spectrum showing a single peak at 419 nm due to the plasmonic effect of silver *** nanocomposite AgNPs-PVA membranes are characterized using scanning electron microscope(SEM),Fourier-transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The pervaporation tests of our new AgNPs-PVA membranes show good results since at a higher temperature and higher ethanol concentration in the feed,the prepared membranes are highly permeable for the water having stable selectivity values and therefore our membranes show better performance compared to that of the other PVA-based nanocomposite membranes.

Phytochemical composition of Caesalpinia crista extract as potential source for inhibiting cholinesterase and β-amyloid aggregation: Significance to Alzheimer's disease

Objective: To screen plant extract fractions and elucidate the components present in Caesalpinia crista(C. crista) leaves for cholinergic and anti-amyloidogenic activities for the treatment of Alzheimer's diseases. Methods: This work has been carried out to study the action of C. crista extracts from nonpolar to polar solvents toward inhibition of oxidative stress, cholinergic and amyloidosis. The antioxidant activity was studied using DPPH total antioxidant assay; cholinergic assay by Ellman's method and anti-amyloidogenic assay by thioflavin-T fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy. Results: The quantification of polyphenols was carried out following C. crista methanolic extract(CCMeOH) HPLC fingerprinting, along with LC-MS and elucidated by MS LAMPS database. GC-MS of CCMeOH was screened for potential moieties. In vitro experimental results showed that the CCMe OH was potential extract that exhibited active inhibition of antioxidant property, cholinergic enzymes acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. For anti-amyloidogenic evaluations, among all the extracts, the CCMe OH was found to have the potential toward inhibiting the oligomers, fibrillation of Aβ42 with good defibrillation of amyloid cascading properties. Conclusions: These results are also supported by the presence of polyphenols as the active ingredients. Multi-potent target drug therapy is a promising option in treating the Alzheimer's diseases. Methanolic extract of C. crista shows potential activity against cholinergic enzymes, Aβ42 aggregation with antioxidant activity.

Dangerous dietary supplements: Garcinia cambogia-associated hepatic failure requiring transplantation

Commercial dietary supplements are marketed as a panacea for the morbidly obese seeking sustainable weight-loss. Unfortunately, many claims cited by supplements are unsupported and inadequately regulated. Most concerning, how ever, are the associated harmful side effects, often unrecognized by consumers. Garcinia cambogia extract and Garcinia cambogia containing products are some of the most popular dietary supplements currently marketed for weight loss. Here, we report the first known case of fulminant hepatic failure associated with this dietary supplement. One active ingredient in this supplement is hydroxycitric acid, an active ingredient also found in weight-loss supplements banned by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 for hepatotoxicity. Heightened awareness of the dangers of dietary supplements such as Garcinia cambogia is imperative to prevent hepatoxicity and potential fulminant hepatic failure in additional patients.

Expanding indications for liver transplantation in the era of liver transplant oncology

Despite numerous advances and emerging data,liver transplantation in the setting of gastrointestinal malignancies remains controversial outside of certain accepted *** an era of persistent organ shortage and increasing organ demand,allocation of liver grafts must be considered *** hepatocellular carcinoma and hilar cholangiocarcinoma have become accepted indications for transplantation,tumor size and standardized multi-disciplinary treatment protocols are necessary to ensure optimal patient *** more studies seeking to expand the oncologic indications for liver transplantation are emerging,it is becoming increasingly clear that tumor biology and response to therapy are key factors for optimal oncologic *** addition,time from diagnosis to transplantation appears to correlate with survival,as stable disease over time portends better outcomes *** aggressive disease pre-transplant remains difficult with current imaging and tissue sampling *** tumor size and stage are important prognostic predictors for most malignancies,patient and tumor selection protocols are *** the fields of medical and surgical oncology continue to evolve,it is clear that a protocolized interdisciplinary treatment approach is necessary for combatting any cancer *** stability over time and response to neoadjuvant therapy may be the best predictors for successful patient outcomes and can be easily incorporated in our treatment *** data evaluating liver transplantation for expanded oncologic indications such as:expanded criteria hepatocellular carcinoma,intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma,mixed tumors,and liver limited metastatic colorectal carcinomas,incorporate multi-modal therapies and evaluation of tumor treatment *** further investigation is necessary,initial results suggest there is an expanded role for transplant surgery in malignancy in a new era of liver transplant oncolog

Body Size as an Indicator of Health for Green Turtles at the TCMP （Tobago Cays Marine Park）, Eastern Caribbean

Gazetted in 1997, The TCMP （Tobago Cays Marine Park） is the only marine protected area within the territorial boundaries of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Sea turtles are an important species in TCMP, and because their globally endangered status have become the focus of an in-water monitoring program, primarily for green turtles （Chelonia mydas）. Preliminary assessment indicated that the TCMP contains an important foraging aggregation of sub-adult green turtles. Since then two additional years of data has been collected; this data was analyzed to assess the health of the turtle population. The data also indicated that the weight was predictable according to carapace width and length and that the population is dominated by larger sub-adults.
