Investigation of material composition,design,and performance of open-graded asphalt mixtures for semi-flexible pavement:A comprehensive experimental study

The primary goal of this study is the design and construction of semi-flexible pavement(SFP)mixture in accordance with the engineering and mechanical criteria.This study involves the use of a range of gradation curves,air void contents,cellulose and synthesized fibers,and neat and modified asphalt binders to prepare the open-graded asphalt(OGA)mixtures.To analyze the characteristics of these mixtures,a variety of test,namely binder drainage,semi-circular bending(SCB),Cantabro,wheel tracking,indirect tensile strength(ITS),and permeability tests were conducted.Additionally,to analyze the prepared grouting material,flexural strength,compressive strength,and fluidity tests were conducted.In the final stage,SFP was compared to HMA in terms of engineering characteristics and performance.According to the results,SFP was more resistant to skid,rutting,fire,and moisture damage,while HMA had a better performance in fracture tests,including SCB test.According to the results of the mechanical performance tests conducted on OGA mixtures,the highest and lowest values for air void content to achieve the highest mechanical performance level were 30%-35%and 25%,respectively.Also,based on the laboratory results,it was determined that the required void ratio for constructing OGA mixtures was 24%-26%based on the bitumen type and fibers amount in the mixture.Finally,SFP mixture can be regarded as a viable alternative to common pavements thanks to its high resistance to rutting and moisture damage,long freezing-thawing fatigue life,and adequate fire and skid resistance.

Tracing suspended and bed sediments during high and low water periods using geochemical characteristics-Case study:Vazrood watershed,northern Iran

Complete and comprehensive information about sediment dynamic and identification of hotspots of sediment production and transport are necessary for understanding the erosion processes and increasing the efficiency of soil and water conservation practices.Numerous studies used the sediment fingerprint techniques to investigate the contribution of different sources in suspended and bed sediment yield of the watersheds.However,the contribution of various land use/land covers in suspended and bed sediment yield for the great Caspian Sea basin is in an aura of ambiguity and the present study was conducted to gather information about an important part of this area in northern Iran,where rangelands are located upstream of Hyrcanian forests and dense agricultural lands are located downstream.The surface soil of different land use/land covers including forest,rangeland,agriculture and streambank lands were sampled in 30 points.Suspended and bed sediments were sampled in the watershed outlet in two high and low water periods.Geochemical characteristics of soil and sediment samples containing 59 elements were measured using ICP-OES GBC Integra.The reliable and suitable tracers from 59 elements were then selected using Range test,Kruskal-Wallis and Discriminant Function Analysis,respectively,in FingerPro package of R software.The results showed that for suspended sediment,streambank and rangeland had the highest contributions of 86.2%and 47.5%,respectively,in two high and low water periods.For bed sediment,in two high and low water periods,rangeland and streambank had the highest contributions of 73.8%and 84.4%,respectively.Land use change and especially human activities such as agriculture,road construction and development of residential areas along the main river riparian zone has led to a significant increase in suspended and bed sediments.

Leveraging electrochemical sensors to improve efficiency of cancer detection

Electrochemical biosensors have emerged as a promising technology for cancer detection due to their high sensitivity,rapid response,low cost,and capability for non-invasive detection.Recent advances in nanomaterials like nanoparticles,graphene,and nanowires have enhanced sensor performance to allow for cancer biomarker detection,like circulating tumor cells,nucleic acids,proteins and metabolites,at ultra-low concentrations.However,several challenges need to be addressed before electrochemical biosensors can be clinically implemented.These include improving sensor selectivity in complex biological media,device miniaturization for implantable applications,integration with data analytics,handling biomarker variability,and navigating regulatory approval.This editorial critically examines the prospects of electrochemical biosensors for efficient,low-cost and minimally invasive cancer screening.We discuss recent developments in nanotechnology,microfabrication,electronics integration,multiplexing,and machine learning that can help realize the potential of these sensors.However,significant interdisciplinary efforts among researchers,clinicians,regulators and the healthcare industry are still needed to tackle limitations in selectivity,size constraints,data interpretation,biomarker validation,toxicity and commercial translation.With committed resources and pragmatic strategies,electrochemical biosensors could enable routine early cancer detection and dramatically reduce the global cancer burden.

Examining the Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Dracaena cinnabari on Sex Hormones and Ovarian and Uterine Tissues of Rats

Introduction: Dracaena cinnabari is considered a rich source of phytochemicals used widely in traditional medicine. In the present study, the effect of D. cinnabari hydraulic extract on the reproductive system of female rats was investigated. Methods: The samples were randomly divided into four groups(six samples in each group), including three treatment groups and one control group, and all samples were kept at the same conditions. Hydraulic extract of D. cinnabari and injected intraperitoneally daily for 10 days, while physiological serum was used for injection in to the control group. After 10 days of injection, estrogen and progesterone levels were measured by enzyme immunoassay technique. After dissection, the ovaries and uterine tissues were isolated for histological examination, and tissue changes were carefully examined. Results: The results revealed that the levels of estrogen and progesterone in experimental Groups 2 and 3 had a significant increase(P < 0.001). Regarding tissue changes, a significant increase was observed in epithelial thickness(P < 0.001), number of corpus luteum(P < 0.01), and Graafian follicle(P < 0.01) in doses of 100 and 150 mg/kg. Conclusions: Based on the results, it seems that D. cinnabari extract has an effect on the ovarian follicles.

Protective effect of co-enzyme Q10 on testicular tissue and sperm parameters in adult male rats treated with Sunset Yellow FCF

Objective:To determine the protective effect of co-enzyme Q10(CoQ10)on testicular tissue and sperm parameters in male rats treated with SunsetYellow FCF.Methods:Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 6 groups of the control,CoQ10(10 mg/kg/day),low dose of Sunset Yellow(2.5 mg/kg),high dose of Sunset Yellow(70 mg/kg),low dose of Sunset Yellow(2.5 mg/kg)plus CoQ10,and high dose of Sunset Yellow(70 mg/kg)plus CoQ10.The drugs were administered via daily oral gavages for 6 weeks.At the end of the experiment,sperm analysis,stereological and histological assessments of the testis were carried out.Results:The normal morphology(by 41.1%)and progressive spermatozoa(by 74.8%),testicle volume(by 33.4%),lumen volume(by 38.3%),interstitial tissue volume(by 44.7%),seminiferous tubule volume(by 40.7%),and number of spermatogonia(by 53.9%)and Leydig cells(by 70.7%)reduced in the rats that received high doses of Sunset Yellow in comparison to the control group.Nonetheless,all these alterations were recovered by CoQ10 treatment in the CoQ10 plus high dose of Sunset Yellow group.Furthermore,low doses of Sunset Yellow did not affect different parameters of the testis and sperm.Conclusions:CoQ10 could,to some extent,prevent structural changes of the testis induced by the high dose of SunsetYellow.

Extensive neurodegeneration is a hallmark of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) that underlies permanent sensorimotor and autonomic impairments (Alizadeh et al.,2019).Following the primary impact,the spinal cord undergoes a cascade of secondary injury mechanisms that are driven by disruption of the blood-spinal cord ba rrier,vascula r inju ry,glial reactivity,neu roinfla mmation,oxidative stress,lipid peroxidation,and glutamate excitotoxicity that culminate in neuronal and oligodendroglial cell death,demyelination,and axonal damage(Alizadeh et al.,2019).To achieve a meaningful functional recovery after SCI,regeneration of new neurons and oligodendrocytes and their successful growth and integration within the neural network are critical steps for reconstructing the damaged spinal cord tissue (Fischer et al.,2020).

Game Theory Based Model for Predictive Analytics Using Distributed Position Function

This paper presents a game theory-based method for predicting the outcomes of negotiation and group decision-making problems. We propose an extension to the BDM model to address problems where actors’ positions are distributed over a position spectrum. We generalize the concept of position in the model to incorporate continuous positions for the actors, enabling them to have more flexibility in defining their targets. We explore different possible functions to study the role of the position function and discuss appropriate distance measures for computing the distance between the positions of actors. To validate the proposed extension, we demonstrate the trustworthiness of our model’s performance and interpretation by replicating the results based on data used in earlier studies.

Soil evolution along an alluvial-loess transect in the Herat Plain,western Afghanistan

Afghanistan is located in the Eurasian loess belt,however,there is little information on the soils in the area.Loess has covered the Herat Plain in western Herat City,Afghanistan.Despite the diversity of landform and parent material,there is no information on the soil and landform evolution in this area.The objectives of this study were to identify the soils along a transect of different landforms in the Herat Plain and determine the role of geomorphic processes on the soil and landform evolution.Five pedons from an alluvial fan,the depression between alluvial fan and piedmont plain,saline and non-saline piedmont plains,and the flood plain of the Hariroud River,were sampled.Then,the physical-chemical properties,mineralogy,and micromorphology of the samples were determined.Results showed that the soil parent material in the piedmont plain is loess,whereas,in the flood plain it is a combination of loess and river alluvial sediments.Calcification,lessivage,salinization,and gleization are the most important pedogenic processes.The calcification and lessivage appear to be the result of a wetter climate during the late Quaternary,whereas the present topography causes the gleization and salinization.Clay coatings on carbonate nodules and iron nodules are abundant pedofeatures in the Btk(argillic-calcic)horizon.Iron oxides nodules are common in the soils of the flood plain.The formation of palygorskite in both alluvial-and loess-derived soils implies the onset of aridity and the trend of increase in environmental aridity in the region.It seems that after the formation of a well developed paleosol on the alluvial fan in a more humid climate in the past,the piedmont plain has been covered by loess deposits,and the calcification,gleization,and salinization cause the formation of weakly developed surficial soils.This study highlights the role of the late Quaternary climatic changes on the evolution of landforms and soils in western Afghanistan.

Antiviral Activity of Medicinal Plants against Human Coronavirus: a systematic scoping review of in vitro and in vivo experimentations

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the in vitro and in vivo studies of natural compounds and medicinal plants with anti-coronavirus activity.METHODS:A systematic review was performed based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and Animal Research:Reporting of in vivo experiments guidelines to find data for medicinal plants and natural products effective against human coronaviruses in in vitro or in vivo studies.Studies published up to September 6,2020 were included.Studies(in vitro or in vivo)reporting the effect of medicinal plants and natural products or their derivatives on human coronavirus were included RESULTS:Promising anti-coronavirus effects are seen with different herbal compounds like some diterpenoids,sesquiterpenoids,and three compounds in tea with 3 CLpro inhibiting effect of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus(SARS-Co V);Hirsutenone,Six cinnamic amides and bavachinin are PLpro inhibitors and Tanshinones are active on both 3 CLpro and PLpro.Some flavonoid compounds of Citrus fruits act on Immunoregulation and target angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 which is used by SARS-COV for entry.Virus helicase is possibly inhibited by two compounds myricetin and scutellarein.CONCLUSION:This review shows that complementary medicine have the potential for new drug discovery against coronavirus.Further research is needed before definitive conclusions can be made concerning the safety and efficacy of the use of these medicinal plants.

在本文研究中,通过利用优势边缘缺口盘型(END)试样,确定了石灰石的断裂韧性,提出了一种新的石灰石归一化相应力、高相变的计算方法.采用柔性有限元法(FEM)对试样的I型(张开)-断裂韧性进行了精确计算,并得到了相应实用公式.在试验中,还使用含缺口巴西圆盘(NBD)试件,测试了END程序的准确性.为了在数值上重现这些测试并验证断裂韧性测量的正确性,还对END测试进行了离散元分析.数值模拟结果与实验结果吻合良好.然而,END研究所确定的韧性水平低于NBD测试规定的韧性水平,这是因为END石灰石样品中的缺口具有均匀的拉伸应力分布.
