目的:研究扁桃斑鸠菊及非洲印楝叶的提取物对链脲佐菌素致糖尿病大鼠肝脏形态学、肝脏氧化性应激标志物及部分肝脏酶类的影响。方法:大鼠腹腔注射链脲佐菌素致糖尿病。不同治疗组大鼠分别口服扁桃斑鸠菊及非洲印楝叶的提取物(500mg/kg)或二甲双胍(150mg/kg),疗程8周,每周测量大鼠的血糖水平及体质量变化。8周后麻醉处死大鼠。取肝组织制成切片,希夫染色法染色,并测量肝匀浆中丙二醛和谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶的含量;下腔静脉采血,分离血浆,检测血浆中丙氨酸氨基转移酶和天冬氨酸氨基转移酶的活性。结果:二甲双胍及植物提取物均能显著改善糖尿病大鼠的血糖水平,且与糖尿病模型组相比,治疗组的体质量明显增加(P0.05),而丙二醛含量明显下降(P<0.05)。结论:扁桃斑鸠菊及非洲印楝叶的提取物对糖尿病大鼠有明显的降糖作用,而肝脏形态学及肝毒性标志物没有明显变化。

Datura metel is one of psychoactive substances of great ethno-pharmacological significance often abused because of its unrestricted availability, yet, little is known about its mechanisms of action. This work was therefore aimed at assessing the activity of ethanolic seed extract of D. metel on Nissl substances, astrocytes, axonal and neuronal integrity of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of Wistar rats. Eighteen Wistar rats averaging 175 g were used and randomly assigned to three groups: group A rats (n = 6) were administered extract of 100 mg/kg bw, group B rats (n = 6) received extract of 200 mg/kg bw, and group C-control (n = 6) took distilled water only for 14 days. The results revealed that D. metel is deleterious to the health of Wistar rats at a dose-dependent rate as observed in its actions on the medial prefrontal cortex at 100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw. The histological study of the treated Wistar rats exhibited features of disoriented neuronal integrity such as, chromatolysis, reduced protein synthesis due to loss of Nissl substances and nuclei, neuronal loss as well as axonal injuries.

OBJECTIVE： Phytochemical constituents as well as antimalarial and toxicity potentials of the methanolic extract of the husk fi bre of Dwarf Red variety of Cocos nucifera were evaluated in this ***： The dried powdered husk fi bre was exhaustively extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol successively and the methanolic extract was screened for fl avonoids, phenolics, tannins, alkaloids, steroids, triterpenes, phlobatannins, anthraquinones and glycosides. A 4-day suppressive antimalarial test was carried out using Plasmodium berghei NK65-infected mice, to which the extract was administered at doses of 31.25, 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight（BW）. Toxicity of the extract was evaluated in rats using selected hematological parameters and organ function indices after orally administering doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg BW for 14 ***： Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, phenolics, saponins, glycosides, steroids and anthraquinones in the extract. Moreover, the extract reduced parasitemia by 39.2% and 45.8% at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg BW respectively on day 8 post-inoculation. Various hematological parameters evaluated were not significantly altered（P〉0.05） at all doses of the extract, except red blood cell count which was signifi cantly elevated（P〈0.05） at 100 mg/kg BW. The extract significantly increased（P〈0.05） urea, creatinine, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and bilirubin concentrations in the serum as well as atherogenic index, while it reduced albumin concentration significantly（P〈0.05） at higher doses compared to the controls. A study on the effects of Navier slip, in conjunction with other flow parameters, on unsteady flow of reactive variable viscosity third-grade fluid through a porous saturated medium with asymmetric convective boundary conditions is presented. The channel walls are assumed to be subjected to asymmetric convective heat exchange with the ambient, and exothermic chemical reactions take place within the flow system. The heat exchange with the ambient obeys Newton＇s law of cooling. The coupled equations, arising from the law of conservation of momentum and the first law of thermodynamics, then the derived system are non- dimensionalised and solved using a semi-implicit finite difference scheme. The lower wall slip parameter is observed to increase the fluid velocity profiles, whereas the upper wall slip parameter retards them because of backflow at the upper channel wall. Heat pro- duction in the fluid is seen to increase with the slip parameters. The wall shear stress increases with the slip parameters while the wall heat transfer rate is largely unaltered by the lower wall slip parameter but marginally increased by the upper wall slip parameter.

The nonlinear continuum model proposed by Cuerno and Barabasi is the most successful and widely acceptable theoretical description of oblique incidence ion sputtered surfaces to date and is quite robust in its predictions of the time evolution and scaling of interfaces driven by ion bombardment. However, this theory has thus far predicted only ripple topographies and rough surfaces for short and large scales, respectively. As a result, its application to the interpretation and study of nanodots, predicted by Monte Carlo simulations for, and observed in experiments of, oblique incidence sputtering is still unclear and, hence, an open problem. In this paper, we provide a new insight to the theory, within the same length scale, that explains nanodot formation on off-normal incidence sputtered surfaces, among others, and propose ways of observing the predicted topographies of the MC simulations, as well as possible control of the size of the nanodots, in the framework of the Cuerno-Barabasi continuum theory.

Traditional complementary foods in Africa are cereal-based, low in nutrient-density;hence, causing severe-acute-malnutrition. This study was aimed to formulate and evaluate nutritional quality of complementary foods (CF) using locally available food materials. Yellow maize (raw, germinated & fermented), defatted groundnut (DGF) and ginger flour (GGF) were blended to obtain RDG (76.7% raw yellow maize, 20.8% DGF and 2.5% GGF), GDG (74.4% germinated yellow maize, 23.1% DGF, 2.5% GGF), and FDG (72.6% fermented yellow maize, 24.9% DGF, 2.5% GGF). Food samples were evaluated for nutritional qualities and sensory attributes using standard methods. Protein (g/100 g), energy value (kCal/100 g), total amino acids and essential amino acids (g/100 g protein) of formulated CF ranged from 19.38 to 28.58, 373.49 to 394.53, 87.33 to 91.89 and 36.17 to 37.63, respectively, and were comparable to control (17.07, 401.22, 94.47 & 35.35). Minerals were present in appreciable amount in the foods, while phytate/mineral (Ca, Fe, Zn) and oxalate/calcium molar ratios were lower than critical levels. Bulk density (1.4 - 1.6 g/mL), least gelation (4 - 6%), water absorption capacity (10.5 - 15.8%) and swelling capacity (0.5 - 1.2%) were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in formulated CF than in control, except for bulk density. Biological value (78.44%) of FDG was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than GDG (78.4%) and RDG (75.87%), respectively, but lower than control (93.48%). Pack cell volume (22.50%), haemoglobin concentration (7.5 g/dL), red blood cell (3 × 103 mm− 3), albumin (3.72 g/dL), total blood protein (5.62 g/dL) and globulin (1.9 g/dL) of rats fed on FDG were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other diets, but comparable to that of control. Kidney (urea, 10.16 mg/dL;creatinine, 4.8 mg/dL) and liver function index (AST/ALT ratio, 0.38) of rats fed on FDG were lower than in those rats fed on RDG, GDG and control. This paper explored through a literature review, the domains of research in Architecture and the nature of doctoral research, with a view to contributing to the evolving research agenda in the Nigerian context. The research method involved a descriptive and thematic analysis of the titles and abstracts of completed doctoral theses in Architecture in Nigeria, in the last 26 years （1990-2015）, complemented by semi-structured interviews with six key informants. The study revealed an emphasis on Housing-related topics （34%） relative to other research modules, such as＇ History and Theory＇（20%） and ＇Design and Production＇（18%）. It also reflected the limited coverage and scope of current research, relative to the global terrain, as evidenced in the article titles and contents of 45 Architecture-related Journals. The results of the interviews indicated the strong influence of supervisors＇ areas of interest in the choices of thesis titles. It highlighted reasons for the perceived focus on Housing, which reflect its unique place and multi-disciplinary nature. It concluded that extending the boundaries of architectural research at the doctoral level could be beneficial to the discipline and profession in Nigeria in order to align with global trends, while keeping cognizance of the local contexts.

This study is devoted to the investigation of thermal criticality for a reactive gravity driven thin film flow of a third-grade fluid with adiabatic free surface down an inclined isothermal plane. It is assumed that the reaction is exothermic under Arrhenius kinetics, neglecting the consumption of the material. The governing non-linear equations for conservation of momentum and energy are obtained and solved by using a new computational approach based on a special type of Hermite-Padé approximation technique implemented in MAPLE. This semi-numerical scheme offers some advantages over solutions obtained with traditional methods such as finite differences, spectral method, and shooting method. It reveals the analytical structure of the solution function. Important properties of overall flow structure including velocity field, temperature field, thermal criticality, and bifurcations are discussed.

This paper makes the thermodynamic analysis in forced convective flow of a third grade fluid through a vertical channel. Due to the reactive nature of the fluid, the effect of internal heat generation is considered and assumed to be a linear function of temperature. The coupled nonlinear dimensionless ordinary differential equations governing the fluid flow are solved by using the Adomian decomposition method（ADM）. The effects of various physical parameters such as third grade material parameter, buoyancy parameter and heat generation parameter on the thermal structure of flow are presented and discussed.
