Background: Although much concern has been expressed about the occupational risk posed to surgeons by the HIV pandemic infection, the paediatric age group is often seen as less likely to harbor the disease. Aim: To determine the HIV infection rate among children presenting for surgical operations at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos. Materials, patients and method: Blood was taken from 1000 consecutive children referred to LUTH for surgical conditions and tested for HIV sero-positivity using the Western blot method. Consenting parents of sero-positive patients were also tested. Result: Five children tested positive for HIV, giving an overall infection rate of 0.5%. Four mothers and three consenting fathers were also positive. In one child, none of the parents was positive and he was suspected to have developed the disease from a previous blood transfusion prior to presentation in LUTH. This possibly resulted from transfusion of infected blood during its window period. Conclusion: Although the HIV infection rate of 0.5% in paediatric surgical group in Lagos is low, surgeons should vigilantly apply universal precautions to prevent needle-stick injuries while the rate of HIV infection should be periodically monitored to determine the trend.

The need for effective and efficient mining of online reviews cannot be overemphasized. This position is as a result of the overwhelmingly large number of reviews available online which makes it cumbersome for customers to read through all of them. Hence, the need for online web review mining system which will help customers as well as manufacturers read through a large number of reviews and provide a quick description and summary of the performance of the product. This will assist the customer make better and quick decision, and also help manufacturers improve their products and services. This paper describes a research work that focuses on mining the opinions expressed on some electronic products, providing ranks or ratings for the features, with the aim of summarizing them and making recommendations to potential customers for better online shopping. A technique is also proposed for scoring segments with infrequent features. The evaluation results using laptops demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques.

This paper presents an application of the spectral homotopy analysis method (SHAM) to solve a problem of darcy-forcheimer mixed convection flow in a porous medium in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and thermopherisis. A mathematical model governed the flow is analyzed in order to study the effects of chemical reaction, magnetic field, viscous dissipation and thermophoresis on mixed convection boundary layer flow of an incompressible, electrically conducting fluid past a heated vertical permeable flat plate embedded in a uniform porous medium. The similarity variable is used to transform the governing equations into a boundary valued problem of coupled ordinary differential equations which are then solved using spectral homotopy Analysis Method. The spatial domains are discretized using Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto points and numerical computations are carried out for the non-dimensional physical parameters. A parametric study of selected parameters is conducted and the results for the velocity, temperature and concentration are illustrated graphically and physical aspects of the problem are discussed.

This research focuses on investigating the effect of quartz particle size and cement replacement on their physicomechnical *** limestone cement(PLC)was employed and replaced with quartz powder(QP)at various particle sizes(1.19 mm,425μm,300μm,212μm,<212μm)and cement replacement between 2.5 wt.%~15 wt.%at interval of 2.5 wt.%to study their impact on the cement *** PLC chemical composition revealed a relatively low lime and high silica content compared to the conventional *** revealed a high silica,lime and sulphur contents compared to natural sand.A high consistence,elongated setting times and lower strengths and specific gravities were observed as cement was replaced with QP at a given particle size *** effect of replacing cement with QP content between 2.5 wt.%and 15 wt.%at various particle sizes resulted in average increments by 45.32%,23.13%and 36.06%for initial setting time,final setting time and water demand *** increase could be related with clinker diminution coupled with enhanced QP surface area and clinker ***,an increase in the QP surface area at a given cement replacement led to higher water consistence,retarded setting times and lower *** effect of enhancing the QP’surface area between 1.19 mm and below 212μm at a given cement replacement resulted in average increments by 26.27%,8.61%and 7.49%for initial and final setting times and water demand *** strength gain of the QP cement blend diminished significantly above 30%up to 15 wt.%cement replacement especially beyond 3 *** low strength could be due to the high-water consistence linked with silica content resulting in setting time *** optimal QP content was determined at 5 wt.%owing to the fact that the physicomechnical properties did not significantly deviate from the properties of control.

This study was carried out to evaluate the resistance of overlaid pavement incorporating stress absorbing membrane interlayers to permanent deformation. In this study, the permanent deformation of the interlayer mixtures was determined using the RLAT （repeated load axial text） carried out in the Nottingham Asphalt Tester. Also, a test pavement was constructed in the laboratory to assess the resistance to permanent deformation of overlaid pavement incorporating SAMIs （stress absorbing membrane interlayers）. The test pavement was divided into two along the centre line. Each of the divisions has three sections--two having SAMIs and one without SAMIs. The pavement was instrumented and trafficked. Trafficking was stopped when the pavement was deemed to have failed. The results showed that the measured permanent deformation values of the control sections were less than the sections having SAMIs. The increased permanent deformation values indicate that the introduction of SAMIs causes more vertical/horizontal deformation of the pavement. It was also found that the permanent deformation values varied depending on the composition and thickness of the SAMIs.

MOCVD of Molybdenum Sulphide Thin Film Via Single Solid Source Precursor Bis-(Morpholinodithioato-s,s’)-Mo

A single solid source precursor bis-(morpholinodithioato-s,s’)-Mo was prepared and molybdenum sulphide thin film was deposited on sodalime glass using Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) technique at deposition temperature of 420?C. The film was characterized using Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Four point probe technique, Scanning Electron Mi-croscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). A direct optical band gap of 1.77 eV was obtained from the analysis of the absorption spectrum. The sheet resistance was found to be of the order of 10P–5P ΩP–1P?cmP–1P. SEM micrographs of the films showed the layered structure of the film with an estimated grain size that is less than 2 μm while XRD indicates parallel orientation of the basal plane to the substrate surface.

Realization of negative stiffness （NS） in damping low frequency acoustic and mechanical vibration is relevant in engineering applications. In this work, assemblage of two repelling magnets was used to produce negative magnetic spring （NMS）. A mass-spring system with NMS is experimented where the free and forced vibrations of the system are examined. The anti-phase movement is observed due to the presence of proposed NMS, confirming the analytical solution. We further showed the dynamics of the system containing NS spring could also be derived from Hamilton＇s principle.

The nano dispersions (colloids) of Cadmium Sulfide, Zinc Sulfide and Cadmium Zinc Sulfide were prepared by modified metathesis reaction between CdCl2, ZnCl2 and Na2S. The prepared sulfides were embedded in polystyrene to form nano-composites. The size, morphology and composition of the nanoparticles on the surface of the composites were examined by using UV/VIS Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). The UV-spectrum shows a shift in the band gap towards high energy while the High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM) analysis shows well resolved nanoparticles with particle sizes between 2-10 nm. The SEM shows that the nanoparticles are in form of nano clusters. The blue shift of the absorption band makes it possible to evaluate the size of the nanocrystallites, which is in agreement with that obtained from HRTEM. The composition as revealed by the EDS shows that the ratios of Cd:S, Zn:S and Cd:Zn:S are approximately 23:20, 58:42 and 32:35:33, respectively. The PIXE spectra confirmed the presence of expected elements and also reveal the presence of impurities.

General anesthesia with controlled ventilation through endotracheal tube is an anaesthetic technique used by the anesthesiologists all over the world. Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation is necessary to achieve this technique. Traditionally succinylcholine is drug of choice for induction due to its rapid onset of action. Aim: This study compared the efficiency of magnesium sulphate in reducing fasciculation and increase in serum potassium which are the common complications associated with suxamethonium administration. Methods: Fifty six patients being planned for lower abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia were randomized into two groups M and S. Serum potassium was taken in the theatre, three minutes before induction of anesthesia patients in M group were given 6 mg/kg of magnesium sulphate diluted in 10 ml normal saline intravenously while in S group 10 ml of normal saline was injected intravenously. The occurrence and degree of fasciculation were recorded after administration of suxamethonium in both groups while serum potassium was also taken at the end of fasciculations. The researcher was blinded to the content of the syringes until after the study. Results: More patients in the S group had fasciculations compared to the M group while the degree of fasciculations was more in the S group, the serum potassium increase was more in the saline group.

Background:The study is focused on assessing predictors of later life inequality in Nigeria with specificity to the gaps in dimension and ***:The study employed linear mixed multi-level regression analysis to assess predictors of aged inequalities status nested between geo-political zones and *** study utilized the general household Survey-Panel(2018-2019)dataset(n=5527 persons aged≤60).Results:Evidence from the cross-sectional study revealed that aging inequalities are prevalent and persist between geo-political zones(γ00=1.374;p<0.001)and among households(γ00=1.266;p≤0.001).Demographic,social,and economic factors were strong determinants of inequality in the ***:These results show that inequality among older adults in place and space is ***,these dire statistics of unequal inequalities at a later age are a significant problem in ***,an in-depth evaluation of the determined risk factors related to unequal aging and actions for its prevention are warranted.
