Climate change is generating range shifts in many organisms,notably along the elevational gradient in mountainous ***,moving up in elevation exposes organisms to lower oxygen availability,which may reduce the successful reproduction and development of oviparous *** test this possibility in an upwardcolonizing species,we artificially incubated developing embryos of the viperine snake(Natrix maura)using a split-clutch design,in conditions of extreme high elevation(hypoxia at 2877 m above sea level;72%sea-level equivalent O2 availability)or low elevation(control group;*** at 436 m above sea level).Hatching success did not differ between the two *** developing at extreme high elevation had higher heart rates and hatched earlier,resulting in hatchlings that were smaller in body size and slower swimmers compared to their siblings incubated at lower ***,post-hatching reciprocal transplant of juveniles showed that snakes which developed at extreme high elevation,when transferred back to low elevation,did not recover full performance compared to their siblings from the low elevation incubation *** results suggest that incubation at extreme high elevation,including the effects of hypoxia,will not prevent oviparous ectotherms from producing viable young,but may pose significant physiological challenges on developing offspring in *** early-life performance limitations imposed by extreme high elevation could have negative consequences on adult phenotypes,including on fitness-related traits.

Intra-operative peritoneal lavage for colorectal cancer

Free cancer cells can be detected in peritoneal fluid at the time of colorectal surgery. Peritoneal lavage in colorectal surgery for cancer is not used in routine, and the prognostic significance of intraperitoneal free cancer cells (IPCC) remains unclear. Data concerning the technique of peritoneal lavage to detect IPCC and its timing regarding colorectal resection are scarce. However, positive IPCC might be the first step of peritoneal spread in colorectal cancers, which could lead to early specific treatments. Because of the important heterogeneity of IPCC determination in reported studies, no treatment have been proposed to patients with positive IPCC. Herein, we provide an overview of IPCC detection and its impact on recurrence and survival, and we suggest further multi-institutional studies to evaluate new treatment strategies.

Selection of patients and staging of peritoneal surface malignancies

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is a common evolution of cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, and has been traditionally regarded as a terminal disease with short median survival. During the last 20 years, thanks to its favourable oncologic results, a new loco-regional therapeutic approach, combining cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), has an important development. Due to its significant, but acceptable, morbidity and mortality, and high cost, this comprehensive management plan requires knowledgeable patient selection. Quantitative prognostic indicators are required to assess a patient’s eligibility. Large multicenter studies have identified several prognostic factors, which can be used for a better selection of patients who would benefit from the combination of cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC. Indications for treatment of PC with cytoreduction and HIPEC are now validated for several diseases: peritoneal mesothelioma, pseudomyxoma peritonei, PC from the appendix, and colorectal cancer. Indications are still under discussion for gastric and ovarian carcinomatosis. Computed tomography is the best radiological for staging the disease. The extent of peritoneal carcinomatosis is, however, difficult to evaluate preoperatively, and precise evaluation is most often performed during surgical exploration. Cytoreductive surgery associated with HIPEC for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis should be performed for young patients with limited and resectable carcino-matosis, in specialized institutions involved in the management of peritoneal surface malignancies.

Molecular speciation of atmospheric organic matter was investigated during a short summer field campaign performed in a citrus fruit field in northern Corsica（June 2011）. Aimedat assessing the performance on the field of newly developed analytical protocols, this work focuses on the molecular composition of both gas and particulate phases and provides an insight into partitioning behavior of the semi-volatile oxygenated fraction. Limonene ozonolysis tracers were specifically searched for, according to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry（GC–MS） data previously recorded for smog chamber experiments. A screening of other oxygenated species present in the field atmosphere was also performed. About sixty polar molecules were positively or tentatively identified in gas and/or particle phases. These molecules comprise a wide range of branched and linear, mono and di-carbonyls（C_3–C7）,mono and di-carboxylic acids（C_3–C_18）, and compounds bearing up to three *** these compounds, some can be specifically attributed to limonene oxidation and others can be related to α- or β-pinene oxidation. This provides an original snapshot of the organic matter composition at a Mediterranean site in summer. Furthermore, for compounds identified and quantified in both gaseous and particulate phases, an experimental gas/particle partitioning coefficient was determined. Several volatile products, which are not expected in the particulate phase assuming thermodynamic equilibrium, were nonetheless present in significant concentrations. Hypotheses are proposed to explain these observations, such as the possible aerosol viscosity that could hinder the theoretical equilibrium to be rapidly reached.

BACKGROUND Careful selection of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients prior to chemoembolization treatment is a daily reality,and is even more necessary with new available therapeutic options in *** propose two new models to better stratify patients and maximize clinical benefit:“6 and 12”and“pre/post-TACE-predict”(TACE,transarterial chemoembolization).METHODS We evaluated and compared their performance in predicting overall survival with other systems{Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC),Albumin-Bilirubin(ALBI)and NIACE[Number of tumor(s),Infiltrative HCC,alpha-fetoprotein,Child-Pugh(CP),and performance status]}in two HCC French cohorts of different stages enrolled between 2010 and *** The cohorts included 324 patients classified as BCLC stages A/B(cohort 1)and 137 patients classified as BCLC stages B/C(cohort 2).The majority of the patients had cirrhosis with preserved liver function.“Pre-TACE-predict”and“6 and 12”models identified three distinct categories of patients exhibiting different prognosis in cohort ***,their prognostic value was no better than the BCLC system or NIACE *** function based on CP and ALBI grades significantly impacted patient ***,the“post-TACE-predict”model had a higher predictive value than other *** stratification ability as well as predictive performance of these new models in an intermediate/advanced stage population was less efficient(cohort 2).CONCLUSION The newly proposed“Pre-TACE-predict”and“6 and 12”models offer an interesting stratification into three categories in a recommended TACE population,as they identify poor candidates,those with partial control and durable *** models'contribution was reduced in a population with advanced stage HCCs.

Contactless Raman Spectroscopy-Based Monitoring of Physical States of Silyl-Modified Polymers during Cross-Linking

Cross-linking of silyl-modified polymers occurs at the alkoxysilane groups attached to the ends of polymer chains by hydrolysis and polycondensation mechanisms in the presence of moisture. During these reactions, three different physical states can be identified (viscous, skin effect and cross-linked state). Knowledge of the evolution of these states at each reaction time is essential to determine the open time for the adhe-sive industry and is generally obtained by a manual method. Automation of this moni-toring could avoid operator error and could be used for very long cross linking reac-tions or to screen a large number of catalysts. Thus, a contactless micro process tech-nology was developed to correlate these physical states with an optical technology, Raman spectroscopy, by monitoring the decrease in intensity of the Si-OCH3 groups during chemical reactions. This online characterization method can also be used to compare the efficiencies of several catalysts for the cross-linking of silyl-modified polymers, using a minimum amount of chemical materials.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Intestinal Metaplasia in Chronic Helicobacter pylori Gastritis in a Country with High Endemicity: Ivory Coast Case

Context/Objective: Few studies have been carried out in a country with high endemicity for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in Sub-Saharan Africa looking for the association of intestinal metaplasia (IM) with chronic gastritis. We hypothesize that IM is correlated with the intensity of H. pylori infection in a country with high endemicity, Ivory Coast. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal metaplasia in chronic H. pylori gastritis in Ivory Coast. Methods: This was a prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study, carried out over a period of 5 months, in the reference hospital centers of Abidjan, specialized in Gastroenterology. All patients who had undergone Gastroscopy with biopsies according to the criteria of the Sydney System for the anatomopathological study, those with chronic gastritis and/or H. pylori intestinal metaplasia on histology and in whom all the parameters of the Sydney system classification had been well informed. The quantitative variables were expressed by their means accompanied by their standard deviations and the qualitative variables by their numbers and percentages. Chi-square and Fischer tests were used to look for associations between variables. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: 152 patients were retained. The mean age was 44.9 ± 12.9 years. The prevalence of intestinal metaplasia was 11.8%. In univariate analysis, no significant association was found between clinical and pathological sociodemographic factors (age, sex, ethnicity, educational level, profession) and intestinal metaplasia in chronic Helicobacter pylori gastric cases. In multivariate analysis we found that prolonged use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) and a history of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) were significantly associated with the absence of IM.
