Purpose:Even in years after recovery from moderate traumatic brain injury(moderate TBI),patients complain about residual cognitive impairment and *** hypothesized that non-linear and linear resting-state electroencephalography(rs EEG)features might also reflect neural underpinnings of these ***:We analyzed a 10-minute rs EEG in 77 moderate TBI-survivors and 151 healthy volunteers after cognitive and psychological *** rs EEG analysis included linear measures,such as power spectral density and peak alpha frequency,and non-linear parameters such as Higuchi fractal dimension,envelope frequency,and Hjorth ***:The patients with moderate TBI had higher scores for fatigue and sleepiness and lower scores for mood and life satisfaction than *** behavioral test for directed attention showed a smaller and non-significant between-group *** rs EEG patterns,moderate TBI-group had significantly higher deltaand theta-rhythm power,which correlated with higher sleepiness and fatigue *** higher beta and lower alpha power were associated with a higher attention level in moderate TBI ***-linear rs EEG features were significantly higher in moderate TBI patients than in healthy controls but correlated with sleepiness and fatigue scores in both controls and ***:The rs EEG patterns may reflect compensatory processes supporting directed attention and residual effect of moderate TBI causing subjective fatigue in patients even after full physiological recovery.

Magnetotactic bacteria(MTB),ubiquitous in soil and fresh and saltwater sources have been identified in the microbiome of humans and many *** endogenously produce magnetic nanocrystals enabling them to orient and navigate along geomagnetic *** magnetite deposits have been found throughout the tissues of the human brain,including brain regions associated with orientation such as the cerebellum and hippocampus,the origins of which remain *** over the role and source of MTB in humans,as well as any association with the brain,remain *** performed a metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiome of 34 healthy females as well as grey matter volume analysis in magnetite-rich brain regions associated with orientation and navigation with the goal of identifying specific MTB that could be associated with brain structure in orientation and navigation *** identified seven MTB in the human gut microbiome:Magnetococcus marinus,Magnetospira ***-2,Magnetospirillum magneticum,Magnetospirillum ***-1,Magnetospirillum ***-1,Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense,and Desulfovibrio *** preliminary results show significant negative associations between multiple MTB with bilateral flocculonodular lobes of the cerebellum and hippocampus(adjusted for total intracranial volume,uncorrected Pvolume in magnetite-rich brain regions related to orientation and *** preliminary findings support MTB as a potential biogenic source for brain magnetite in *** studies will be necessary to validate and elucidate the relationship between these bacteria,magnetite concentrations,and brain function.

Recently gold nanoparticles(GNPs)have been actively studied as photot hermal converters,drug carriers,and imaging agents in a wide range of applications in cancer diagnosis and ther *** prolonged peroral administration of GNPs in a range of sizes was performed to investigate the morphological changes and their reversibility in the internal organs of laboratory *** this study,GNP's with average diameters of 2 nm,15 nm and 50nm were administered during 30 days,and the reversibility of morphological changes was investigated 14 days after *** the prolonged administration of GNPs,the severity of morphological changes in the liver,kidney,spleen and lymph nodes depended on the nanoparticle ***,50 nm nano-particles caused the most pronounced dystrophic and necrobiotic effects,whereas the smallest 2 nm nanoparticles caused proliferative *** importantly,the development of patho-logical processes was reversible,as evidenced by the gradual restoration of the organ structure at 14 days after the end of GNPs administration.

In the urbanized territory (the Irkutsk city), the content of sulfur and heavy metals (lead, cadmium, copper, zinc) in soil profile horizons and leaves (needles) arboreal plants were studied. High accumulation of polluting elements in pine and larch needles, birch and poplar leaves, as well as in all genetic horizons of the city soils was shown. There were revealed elements disbalance in city trees assimilation organs showing in the increase of the polluting elements quota with the parallel decrease of the quota of nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese. Pollutants concentration in trees needles (leaves) was shown to be closely related to their content in soil horizons. The results speak in favor of high migration ability of polluting elements in soil profile and about possibility their entrance in trees root system and further to assimilation organs from all city soils horizons. It can be concluded that data on accumulation and migration of polluting elements in soils and arboreal trees assimilation organs contribute to adequate assessment of technogenic load on urban ecosystems.

The nanocomposites based on cobalt oxide and nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) with cobalt oxide contents of 10–90 wt% were examined as catalysts in the CO oxidation and supercapacity electrodes. Depending on Со3О4 content, such nanocomposites have different morphologies of cobalt oxide nanoparticles, distributions over the bulk, and ratios of Со3+/Co2+ cations. The 90%Со3О4-N-CNFs nanocomposite showed the best activity because of the increased concentration of defects in N-CNFs. The capacitance of electrodes containing 10%Со3О4-N-CNFs was 95 F/g, which is 1.7 times higher than electrodes made from N-CNFs.

Functional Activity of Circulating Phagocytes as Potential Pretreatment Marker of Tumor Drug Resistance

The aim of this work was a study of the functional activity of neutrophils and peripheral blood monocytes in rats with the transplanted Walker carcinosarcoma as potential predictors of the sensitivity of this tumor to doxorubicin treatment. This study provides an evidence that such indices of the functional activity of circulating phagocytes of the tumor-bearing rats as the quantity and the phagocytosis intensity of monocytes, as well as the intensity of ROS production by monocytes and neutrophils, may reflect the degree of sensitivity of the tumor to doxorubicin. So it was shown that the growth of the resistant tumor caused a significant increase of the number of circulating phagocytic cells and the intensity of phagocytosis by more than 100% (p variant of the tumor. The ability of blood mono-cytes and neutrophils of rats with a resistant tumor to produce ROS was also significantly different from that in intact rats and animals with the parental carcinosarcoma variant. The predictive value of these indices is especially important in the dynamic monitoring of the development of tumor drug resistance during long-term cancer chemotherapy. Considering the standard 2 - 3 week interval between the courses of cancer therapy and the short lifetime of circulating phagocytes, an assessment of the indices of their functional activity before each subsequent course can be considered as a pretreatment assessment. Meanwhile, further studies are needed to determine the spectrum of malignant neoplasms for which the degree of tumor drug resistance correlates with the functional activity of circulating phagocytes.

This study examines how the dynamics of fungus-insect interactions can be modulated by temperature. The wax moth, Galleria mellonella, is a well-studied and important model insect whose larvae in the wild develop optimally at around 34 ℃ in beehives. However, surprisingly little research on wax moths has been conducted at relevant temperatures. In this study, the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii inflicted rapid and substantial mortality on wax moth larvae maintained at a constant temperature of 24 ℃, but at 34 ℃ a 10 fold higher dose was required to achieve an equivalent mortality. The cooler temperature favored fungal pathogenicity, with condial adhesion to the cuticle, germination and hemocoel invasion all significantly enhanced at 24 ℃, compared with 34 ℃. The wax moth larvae immune responses altered with the temperature, and with the infective dose of the fungus. Enzyme-based immune defenses （lysozyme and phenoloxidase） exhibited enhanced activity at the warmer temperature. A dramatic upregulation in the basal expression of galiomicin and gallerimycin was triggered by cooling, and this was augmented in the presence of the fungus. Profiling of the predominant insect epicuticular fatty acids revealed a 4-7 fold increase in palmetic, oleic and linoleic acids in larvae maintained at 24 ℃ compared with those at 34 ℃, but these failed to exert fungistatic effects on topically applied fungus. This study demonstrates the importance of choosing environmental conditions relevant to the habitat of the insect host when determining the dynamics and outcome of insect/fungus interactions, and has particular significance for the application of entomopathogens as biocontrol agents.
