Assessment of Health Workers’ Concern about COVID-19 Pandemic: Implication for Surveillance Activities among Primary Health Care Workers in Oyo State, South-Western Nigeria

Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has continued to threaten the existence of the human race. The novelty and unstable epidemiologic pattern of the virus had generated so much concern among the global health experts. These concerns were found to be escalated among the frontline health care workers to the extent of impeding the timeliness of the response activities. To slow down the spread of the already established community transmission through the surveillance activities, the concern of the health workers at the community level needs to be addressed. Therefore, this study assessed the concern about COVID-19 pandemic among primary health workers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Methods: This was an online cross-sectional survey conducted among primary health care workers in Oyo State between March and April 2020. Using a two-stage sampling technique, we recruited 284 respondents. A semi-structured questionnaire linked to the Google form was used to collect data. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25;bivariate analysis was done using Chi-square and binary logistic regression was used to identify the predictors of health workers’ concern at 5% level of significance. Results: The mean age of respondents was 45.0 ± 9.0 years. The proportion of the respondents who had good knowledge of COVID-19 was 52.5%. In the domains of concern, 66.9%, 53.2%, 51.4%, and 46.5% of the respondents expressed government-related, self-satisfaction related, work-related and social-status related concerns respectively. Male respondents were less likely to express concern about COVID-19 compared with their female counterparts (aOR = 0.39, 95% CI = 0.20 - 0.76). Nurses/midwives (aOR = 0.21, 95% CI = 0.05 - 0.85) had lesser likelihood of expressing concern about COVID-19 while middle staff (aOR = 2.5, 95% CI = 1.18 - 5.39) and income earner of ≥N200,000 (aOR = 2.3, 95% CI = 1.34 - 3.92) had higher likelihood of

Background: Worldwide, the burden of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors is rising with devastating impacts on the productive workforce. In developing nations, it has further led to an unstable population pyramid as a result of premature deaths of her workforce leading to the continued tapering of the pyramidal apex. Inspite of this, many studies were conducted among the general population neglecting the local government civil servants who are seen as policy implementers. Therefore, the study assessed the pattern of CV risk factors in South-western Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 local government workers selected by multistage sampling technique from July to September 2017. A pretested, interviewer-administered questionnaire was administered to obtain socio-demographic and behavioural information. Lipid analysis, anthropometric, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose measurements were done according to protocols. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25;bivariate analysis was done using Chi-square. Level of significance was at 5%. Results: The mean age of respondents was 46.0 ± 6.7 years. The proportion of participants with good knowledge of risk factors was 57.7%. The proportion of respondent with hypertension, visceral obesity, general obesity, diabetes, smoking and physical inactivity was 40.4%, 35.0%, 52.2%, 38.2%, 5.8% and 75.8% respectively. Predicting pollutant removal in constructed wetlands using artificial neural networks(ANNs)

Growth in urban population,urbanisation,and economic development has increased the demand for water,especially in water-scarce ***,sustainable approaches to water management are needed to cope with the effects of the urbanisation on the water *** study aimed to design novel configurations of tidal-flow vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands(VFCWs)for treating urban stormwater.A series of laboratory experiments were conducted with semi-synthetic influent stormwater to examine the effects of the design and operation variables on the performance of the VFCWs and to identify optimal design and operational strategies,as well as maintenance *** results show that the VFCWs can significantly reduce pollutants in urban stormwater,and that pollutant removal was related to specific VFCW *** based on the artificial neural network(ANN)method were built using inputs derived from data exploratory techniques,such as analysis of variance(ANOVA)and principal component analysis(PCA).It was found that PCA reduced the dimensionality of input variables obtained from different experimental design *** results show a satisfactory generalisation for predicting nitrogen and phosphorus removal with fewer variable inputs,indicating that monitoring costs and time can be reduced.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of aqueous leaf extract of Adansonia(A.)digitata L on dexamethasone-induced testicular damage in male Wistar ***:Twenty adult male Wistar rats weighing 170-190 g were divided into four ***Ⅰreceived 0.5 mL of phosphate buffer orally for 28 days and served as the normal control group;groupⅡreceived 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone(a synthetic glucocorticoid)intraperitoneally for 7 days and 0.5 mL of phosphate buffer orally for 21 days,groupⅢreceived 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone for 7 days and 800 mg/kg of *** extract orally for 21 days;groupⅣreceived 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone for 7 days and 300 mg/kg of vitamin-E orally for 21 *** was administered intra-peritoneally for 7 days and all administration lasted for 28 *** rats were sacrificed by anesthesia with diethyl ether and the testes of each animal were *** testis was homogenized in 0.25 M sucrose at 4℃for biochemical and histological ***:Administration of dexamethasone significantly decreased body weight,glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G6PDH),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)(P<0.05),and significantly increased malondialdehyde(MDA)activities(P<0.05).The degeneration in the population of spermatogonia and vacuolation and abnormal widening of the interstitial spaces were observed in the rats treated with ***,administration of *** significantly increased SOD,GPx,G6PDH,and LDH levels,significantly decreased MDA activities and improved the histoarchitecture of the testis(P<0.05).Conclusions:*** may have an ameliorative effect on dexamethasone-induced testicular damage in Wistar rats because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Background:Diabetes-related cataract extraction is a minor surgery required to regain full *** of the recognized factors that can delay or prevent full-vision recovery is poor management,and most of this management is being carried out by patients ***:This study aimed to assess the knowledge of diabetes patients on self-management after cataract extraction in two tertiary hospitals in Osun ***:A cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted among 97 diabetes patients who underwent cataract extraction and were attending clinics and follow-up visits in Osun State.A self-structured questionnaire was used for data ***:Moderate knowledge was found among the participants on an appropriate diet(56.7%),prevention of injury risk(57.5%),prevention of infection risk(50.9%),and low knowledge on the technique of administration of eye drop(60.8%)after cataract extraction,whereas 74.7%of the total respondents were knowledgeable on the indication for follow-up visit after cataract extraction,these results were found to be below the expected knowledge ***:An intensive and comprehensive educational initiative by nurses should be tailored to meet the specific needs of diabetes patients with cataract *** also need to implement the use of checklist which will enhance learning and improve patient understanding of self-management after cataract extraction.

以给水处理厂产生的铝污泥为研究对象,考察其对磷的吸附特性及陈化时间的影响。结果表明,铝污泥对磷的吸附容量主要受p H值的影响,当p H值由4.3升至9.0时,磷吸附容量由3.57 mg/g降为0.74 mg/g;水解试验结果显示,铝污泥中含有羟基、氯离子、硫酸根离子及腐殖质等;吸附过程中,伴随着磷酸根浓度的下降,p H值、氯离子、硫酸根离子及腐殖质呈上升趋势,表明铝污泥对磷的吸附机理主要是配位体交换。在540 d的陈化过程中,傅里叶红外光谱、X射线衍射及SEM分析结果表明,铝污泥的结构、官能团和表面形貌均未发生明显变化,表明陈化时间对铝污泥吸附磷的性能并无显著影响。

在人工湿地污水处理过程中，铝污泥泥饼可作为湿地植物生长的基质以及微生物膜附着生长的多孔载体。经过对铝污泥人工湿地系统的深入研究，旨在阐明此类人工湿地应用的主要关键问题：①铝污泥是否适用于人工湿地？②铝能否从铝污泥中滤出？③铝污泥在湿地中的使用寿命有多久？④磷是否可以从使用过的铝污泥中回收再利用？⑤是否会有堵塞现象的发生，该如何解决？结果表明：从物理、化学测试结果来看，铝污泥是一种适合的人工湿地填料；湿地系统出水中铝确有滤出，但这只发生在试验最初的10—14d之内，且浓度大大低于饮用水准则中规定的限值；铝污泥在人工湿地中的使用寿命为4～17年；从使用过的铝污泥中提取磷是可行的；湿地在运行中会发生堵塞，可考虑采用系统轮空休息及替换为反粒度砾石床延缓堵塞。

Blood biochemistry is routinely used in veterinary medicine to evaluate the health status of animals and *** experiment was designed to evaluate serum metabolites and haematological parameters of pullet chicks fed cassava root products(CRPs).Diet 1 contained 100%maize and served as the control diet(CD).Diets 2,3 and 4 contained 50%unpeeled cassava chip(UCC),unpeeled cassava pellet(UCP)and unpeeled cassava grit(UCG),respectively,while diets 5,6 and 7 contained 100%of respective cassava *** were three replicates of 10 birds each in a completely randomized *** the seventh week,blood samples were carefully collected from three birds from each replicate for haematological indices and serum *** on haematological indices showed that values recorded were not adversely(p0.05)to values recorded by birds fed cassava based *** respective values ranged from 18.50%to 24.50%,11.30 g/dL to 12.75 g/dL,2.43×10^6/mm^3 to 3.69×10^6/mm^3,32.96μmg to 50.87μmg and 44.65%to 63.41%.Serum glucose and thiocyanate were significantly(p<0.05)affected by inclusion of *** thiocyanate of birds fed the CD(0.14 mg/dL)was lower(p<0.05)than values recorded for those fed 50%and 100%UCC,UCP and UCG(2.33 and 2.56,2.25 and 2.47,2.19 and 2.38 mg/dL,respectively).Also values of serum glucose of birds fed 100%UCC,UCP and UCG(181.52,179.64 and 173.24 mg/dL,respectively)were higher(p<0.05)than ***,serum protein and its fractions were not ***,haematological indices were not adversely affected by dietary treatment,but serum glucose and thiocyanate were affected.

Maternal Plasma Lipid Profile in Women Screened for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)

Objective: This is to determine the plasma lipid profile status of patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus. Methodology: Seventy-nine pregnant women between gestational age of 24 and 28 weeks out of which 23 and 16 were diagnosed of having GDM using IADAPSG and WHO guidelines respectively were recruited into the study. Plasma lipid profile was determined among the study groups using standard laboratory techniques. Results: Higher numbers of women were diagnosed with GDM using IASDAPG criteria than when WHO criteria were used. Plasma lipid profile showed no significant difference between women with GDM and Non-GDM irrespective of guidelines used in the diagnosis of GDM. Conclusion: Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus may have influence on lipid metabolism but not likely in the second trimester of pregnancy as observed in our study.
