Background: Fractures of humeral shaft in adults are common injuries. Humeral shafts non-union either from late presentation after initial treatment by traditional bone setters or failed non-operative orthodox care is a major problem in this part of the world. This non-union is a major treatment challenge with increased cost of care and morbidity in this part of the world. Humeral shaft non-union can be treated with locked intra-medullary nailing (LIMN) or dynamic compression plating (DCp). Study on comparison of these methods of fixation in this part of the world is scarce in literature search, hence the reason for this study. Objective: The objectives of this study are: (1) to compare early clinical outcome following fixation of humeral shaft fracture nonunion with DCp versus LIMN;(2) to compare the time of radiologic fracture union of DCp with LIMN;(3) to compare complications following fixation of humeral shaft fracture nonunion with DCp versus LIMN. patients and Methods: This was a randomized control study done for 2 years in which fifty adult patients with humeral shaft non-union were recruited. The patients were grouped into 2 (p = DCp & N = LIMN). Forty five of the patients completed the follow up periods of the study and then analyzed. The p group had ORIF with DCp while the N group had ORIF with LIMN. Both groups had grafting with cancellous bones. Each patient was followed up for a period of 6 months at the time which radiographic union is expected. Any patient without clinical and/or radiographic evidence of union after six months of surgery was diagnosed as having recurrent non-union. The data generated was analyzed using SpSS Version 23. The results were presented in charts and tables. The paired t-test was used while considering p value Result: Forty five patients completed follow up. Objective:To evaluate the success rate of tuberculosis intervention programme at a specialist hospital in(?)badan,Nigeria through a retrospective study as well as carry out physicochemical evaluation of anti-tuberculous agents as a way of eliminating drug-related ***:The retrospective study involved the use of quarterly tuberculosis central register at the Government Chest Hospital,(?)badan between 1st quarter(2003)to 4th quarter(2009).Relevant data were extracted from these register with the aid of data collection *** basic physicochemical analyses of the drugs given to the patients were also carried out using the International pharmacopoeia ***:All the drugs examined for their physicochemical properties passed the International pharmacopeia recommended tests.A total number of 1 260 patients enrolled at the hospital were assessed through case *** comprises of 59.4%males of which69.23%new cases were also *** was a significant(ppatient enrollment across the quarters for the seven *** overall 80.24%cure rate over the 7-period was obtained which is less than the WHO target of 85%.Cure rates were better in females than *** treatment outcomes such as positive(1.51%),deaths(8.73%),defaulted(3.33%)and transferred out(5.95%)were recorded though not statistically significant(p>0.05).Failure rates in all categories were higher in males than females(p>0.05).Conclusions:More enlightenment and counseling is still required to meet up with the target for TB control.

Catalytic activities of ultra-small β-FeOOH nanorods in ozonation of 4-chlorophenol

We report the catalytic properties of ultra-small β-FeOOH nanorods in ozonation of4-chlorophenol（4-Cp）. XRD, TEM, EDS, SAED, FTIR and BET were used to characterize the prepared material. Interaction between O3 and β-FeOOH was evident from the FTIR *** removal efficiency of 4-Cp was significantly enhanced in the presence of β-FeOOH compared to ozone alone. Removal efficiency of 99% and 67% was achieved after 40 min in the presence of combined ozone and catalyst and ozone only, respectively. Increasing catalyst load increased COD removal efficiency. Maximum COD removal of 97% was achieved using a catalyst load of 0.1 g/100 m L of 4-Cp solution. Initial 4-Cp concentration was not found to be rate limiting below 2 × 10^-3mol/L. The catalytic properties of the material during ozonation process were found to be pronounced at lower initial p H of *** stage first order kinetics was applied to describe the kinetic behavior of the nanorods at low p H. The first stage of catalytic ozonation was attributed to the heterogeneous surface breakdown of O3 by β-FeOOH, while the second stage was attributed to homogeneous catalysis initiated by reductive dissolution of β-FeOOH at low p H.

Water-based polymer films can be readily deposited onto a wide range of metallic materials as an environmentally friendly coating through the demulsification-induced fast solidification(DIFS)***,there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of the demulsification process of the water-based emulsions and their deposition ***,we demonstrate that the build-up process of the commercial water-based micron-scale waterborne polyurethane,polyvinyl acetate,polyurethane acrylate,and natural rubber polymer films is affected by the collective effect of electric field and ion diffusion exerted by anode-cathode electrode pairs,applied voltage,conduction time,electrode distance,and emulsion species.A structural investigation of as-prepared polymer films allows us to propose two new structure build-up *** a flat film deposition,isolated islands are formed first and grow on the substrate surface,and eventually,their mutual coalescence forms the final ***,for a convex layer formation,the layer is first formed in the middle of the substrate and then grows toward the sides of the convex structure of the *** results presented in this work expand the understanding of the mechanism of the DIFS process and may provide some new insights into structure-oriented multifunctional material design.

The phenolics composition and inhibitory activity of Tetrapleura tetraptera fruit extract on xanthine oxidase(XO)and Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in the kidney,liver and lungs tissues of rats were evaluated in ***(flavonoids and phenolic acids)were quantified using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatrography coupled with diode array detection(HpLC-DAD).The XO and Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation inhibitory abilities of the extract were evaluated using spectrophotometric *** extract contained some flavonoids and phenolic acids,including catechin,epicatechin,rutin,quercetin,luteolin,apigenin;gallic,chlorogenic,caffeic and ellagic acids that are beneficial to *** extract inhibited XO in the kidney,liver and lungs tissues in a dose-dependent *** half-maximal inhibitory concentrations(IC50)of the extract on XO from the tissues varied significantly(pkidney>*** extract also inhibited Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent pattern,having IC50 in the order of liver>lungs>*** fruit extract could be a promising nutraceutical for preventing and managing hyperuricaemia and the associated disease conditions,due to its ability to inhibit XO;this bioactivity is attributable to combined effect of its flavonoids and phenolic acids.

Study Design: prospective analytical study. Objectives: The aim was to determine the association between mental depression and symptomatic Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease (LDDD) in patients with no previous background of mental disorder. We also aimed at determining the incidence of mental depressions in patients with LDDD and the effects of the treatment on the mental depression. Methodology: One hundred and sixty patients with no prior history of mental or behavioral disorders who presented with low back pains arising from LDDD and met inclusion criteria were studied. The clinical findings and Depression Screening Test pro-forma were completed for each. The extracted information was analyzed using Statistical package for Social Science (SpSS) version 24.0. The statistical significance was set at p Results: One hundred and fifty-three patients completed the study, with a male to female ratio of 1:1.5 and the mean age of the patients was 48.5 years. The marital status was 4.4% single, 86.9% married, 3.8% divorce/separate and 5% widow/widower. Their levels of education were: no formal education (10.00%), primary school level (8.10%), secondary level (27.50%) and Tertiary level (54.40%). Conclusions: This study showed the incidence of mental depression in 32% of the patients with LDDD. We also noted a statistically significant relationship between symptomatic LDDD and level of mental depression with significant improvement in the level of depression at 6th month after treatment. Hence, assessment of the patients’ mental health is important in the management of LDDD.

Background perioperative mortality is one of the tools that can help to assess the adequacy of healthcare delivery in a *** audit was conducted to determine the 24-hour,7-day and 30-day perioperative mortality rates and the predictors of mortality in a pediatric surgical *** This was a prospective study of children whose ages ranged from a few hours to 15 years and who were operated on between May 2019 and April *** primary outcome was to determine the incidence of in-hospital perioperative *** A total of 530 procedures were done in 502 *** ages ranged from a few hours to 15 years with a median of 36 *** 24-hour,7-day and 30-day mortality rates were 113.2 per 10000 procedures[95%confidence interval(CI)=40 to 210],207.6 per 10000 procedures(95%CI=110 to 320)and 320.8 per 10000 procedures(95%CI=190 to 470),*** anomalies complicated by postoperative sepsis contributed to death in the majority of *** predictors of mortality were neonatal age group[adjusted odds ratio(AOR)=19.92,95%CI=2.32 to 170.37,p=0.006],higher American Society of Anesthesiologists physical Status III and above(AOR=21.6,95%CI=3.05 to 152.91,p=0.002),emergency surgery(AOR=17.1,95%CI=5.21 to 60.27,p=0.001),congenital anomalies(AOR=12.7,95%CI=3.37 to 47.52,p=0.001),and multiple surgical procedures(AOR=9.7,95%CI=2.79 to 33.54,p=0.001).Conclusion perioperative mortality remains high in our institution.

目的:收集南非健康黑人的角膜直径(CD)、曲率(ACC)和角膜中央厚度(CCT)的数据并探讨其与屈光不正等效球镜(SE)、眼轴长度(AL)、前房深度(ACD)、晶状体厚度(LT)的相关性,及三个角膜参数之间的相关性。方法:选取600例受试者,包括305例男性和295例女性(平均年龄:28.15±13.1y,年龄范围:10~66y)接受全面的眼科检查,包括验光,裂隙灯和眼底镜检查。Oculus Keratograph 4检测CD和ACC,ivue-100光学相干断层扫描检测CCT。Nidek AR-310A自动验光仪和主观验光检测屈光不正。Nidek US-500 A超检测AL,ACD和LT。结果:由于左右眼参数评估的差异无统计学意义,此处只显示右眼的结果。角膜各项参数平均值如下:CD=11.77±0.32 mm(10.30-13.70 mm),ACC=7.88±0.29 mm(7.13~8.88 mm),CCT=493.05±33.2μm(412~590μm)。CD与SE无相关性(r=0.05,p=0.24)。CD与AL(r=0.58,p=0.00)、ACD(r=0.63,p=0.00)显著相关,但与LT(r=-0.40,p=0.00)呈负相关。ACC与SE(r=-0.03,p=0.48)无显著相关性。ACC与AL(r=0.40,p=0.00)呈正相关。ACC与ACD(r=0.04,p=0.56)、LT(r=-0.03,p=0.88)无显著相关性。CCT与角膜以外其他参数间无显著相关性。角膜各项参数的相关性表明,CD与ACC(r=0.71,p=0.00)、CCT(r=-0.68,p=0.00)相关。结论:CD与AL、ACD、LT相关,ACC与AL相关。CCT与角膜以外其它参数无相关性,是一个独立的因素。在角膜各项参数中,CD与ACC、CCT相关。
