Antiviral activities o. extracts fro. Ho.g Ko.g seaweeds

We extracted six Ho.g Ko.g bro.n seaweed species with ho. water fo. their antiviral pro.erties. The cyto.o.icity and antiviral activity o. these extracts were tested by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazo.-2-yl)-2,5-diphenlytetrezo.ium bro.ide] metho., cyto.athic effect reductio. assay, and plaque reductio. assay. The antiviral effect was further determined by flo. cyto.etric analysis. The results sho.ed that mo.t o. these extracts inhibited the pro.agatio. o. herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) standard strains with very lo. cyto.o.icity to.the ho.t cells. The extracts o. Hydro.lathrus clathratus and Lo.o.ho.a variegata sho.ed mo.e po.ential anti-HSV activities than the extracts o. the o.her fo.r seaweeds. They also.had mo.erate anti- respirato.y syncytial virus (RSV) activities but co.ld no. inhibit influenza A virus. Hydro.lathrus clathratus was further extracted by diluted acid and alkali and the antiviral effects o. the extracts were also.detected. The result sho.ed that the ho. water extract co.tained the main carbo.ydrate co.po.ents that exhibited the antiviral activities against vario.s strains o. HSV, including the acyclo.ir-resistant strain. HI-3, a co.po.nd fractio.ated fro. this ho. water extract, sho.ed a do.e-dependent anti-HSV activity in flo. cyto.etric analysis and plaque reductio. assay.

This paper investigated the flo. distributio. and to.al pressure dro. acro.s a designed 3-D filter ho.sing integrated with a 3-stage filtratio. system using co.puta- tio.al fluid dynamics （CFD）. The filter ho.sing mo.el was pro.o.ed fo. a heavy-duty industrial gas turbine plant o.erating at an average ambient temperature o. 20℃.The pressure dro.s acro.s the classes o. filters were 652.8 Pa, 2692.2 Pa, 887.8 Pa, 776.2 Pa and 2304.2 Pa fo. I-GB, GB-GA, GA-FA, FA-HA, and HA-o. respectively. The results o.tained indicated an acceptable to.al pressure dro. o. 7.2% fo. the entire filter ho.sing befo.e filter clean-up. Altho.gh the CFD simulatio. result sho.s that small o.tlet flo. velo.ity and transo.ic flo.s exist at the o.tlet o. the filter ho.sing, the designed filter ho.sing was pro.ed co.patible with the studied GT, fo. inlet flo. co.ditio.s between 600≤ Wair≤610 kg/s and 60≤Vair≤70 m/s fo. the air flo. rate and velo.ity, respectively. Furthermo.e, the designed filter ho.sing co.ld be ado.ted fo. the studied GT and lo.atio.s o. Usan and Maiduguri in Nigeria, and o.her lo.atio.s with similar enviro.mental co.ditio.s.

In the present paper we have co.sidered a mo.el fo. o.e prey and two.co.peting predato. po.ulatio.s with time lag and square ro.t functio.al respo.se o. acco.nt o. herd fo.matio. by prey. It is sho.n that due to.the inclusio. o. ano.her co.peting predato., the underlying system witho.t delay beco.es mo.e stable and limit cycles do.no. o.cur naturally. Ho.ever, after co.sidering the effect o. time lag in the basic system, limit cycles appear in the case o. all equilibrium po.nts when delay time cro.ses so.e critical value. Fro. the numerical simulatio., it is o.served that the length o. delay is minimum when o.ly prey po.ulatio. survives and it is maximum when all the po.ulatio.s co.xist.

The nuisance caused by the blo.d-seeking adult female mo.quito.s mo.ivates mo.quito.co.tro.. Larviciding with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis is co.sidered the mo.t enviro.mentally safe metho.. Ho.ever, so.e co.cern has been raised whether aquatic predato.y insects co.ld be indi- rectly affected by this reductio. in a po.ential vital prey. To. predato.s in the tempo.ary wetlands in the River Dal/ilven flo.dplains are diving beetles （Co.eo.tera： Dytiscidae）, and Aedes sticticus andAe, vexans are the target species fo. mo.quito.co.tro.. Fo. detailed stud- ies o. this aquatic predato.-prey system, we develo.ed a po.ymerase chain reactio. （PCR） assay fo. detectio. o. mo.quito.DNA in the guts o. medinm-sized diving beetles. Primers were designed fo. amplifying sho.t mito.ho.drial DNA fragments o. the cyto.hro.e C o.idase subunit I （Co.） gene in Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans, respectively. Primer speci- ficity was co.firmed and half-life detectability o.Ae. sticticus DNA in diving beetle guts was derived fro. a feeding and digestio. experiment. The Ae. sticticus DNA within diving beetle guts was detected up to.12 h po.tfeeding, and half-life detectability was estimated to.5.6 h. In additio., field caught diving beetles were screened fo. Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans DNA and in 14% o. the diving beetles o.e o. bo.h mo.quito.species were detected, sho.ing that these mo.quito.species are utilized as fo.d by the diving beetles.

The plasma was generated in a stainless steel discharge chamber by an ac generato. at a frequency o. 60 Hz, o.tput po.er o. 50 W and a gas flo. rate o. 1.8 L/min. The electro. temperature and io. density were estimated to.be 2.15±0.11 eV and （1.24±0.05）× 10^16 m^-3, respectively, using a do.ble Langmuir pro.e. o.S was emplo.ed to.o.serve the emissio. fro. the asphaltene expo.ed to.air plasma. Bo.h mo.ecular band emissio. fro. N2, N2＋, o., CH, NH, o. as well as CN, and ato.ic light emissio. fro. V and Hγ were o.served and used to.mo.ito. the evo.utio. o. asphaltene ero.io.. The asphaltene ero.io. was analyzed with the aid o. a scanning electro. micro.co.e （SEM） equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray （EDX） detecto.. The EDX analysis sho.ed that the time evo.utio. o. elements C, o. S and V were similar and the chemical co.po.itio. o. the expo.ed asphaltenes remained co.stant. Particle size evo.utio. was measured, sho.ing a maximum size o. 2307 μm after 60 min. This behavio. is mo.t likely related to.particle agglo.eratio. as a functio. o. time.
