Effects of ocean acidifi cation driven by elevated CO_2 on larval shell growth and abnormal rates of the venerid clam, Mactra veneriformis

A bstract The venerid clam(M actra veneriformis Reeve 1854) is one of the main cultured bivalve species in intertidal and shallow subtidal ecosystems along the west coast of Korea. To understand the effects of ocean acidifi cation on the early life stages of Korean clams, we investigated shell growth and abnormality rates and types in the D-shaped, umbonate veliger, and pediveliger stages of the venerid clam M. veneriformis during exposure to elevated seawater pCO_2. In particular, we examined abnormal types of larval shell morphology categorized as shell deformations, shell distortions, and shell fi ssures. Specimens were incubated in seawater equilibrated with bubbled CO_2-enriched air at(400±25)×10^(-6)(ambient control),(800±25)×10^(-6)(high pCO_2), or(1 200±28)×10^(-6)(extremely high pCO_2), the atmospheric CO_2 concentrations predicted for the years 2014, 2084, and 2154(70-year intervals; two human generations), respectively, in the Representative Concentration Pathway(RCP) 8.5 scenario. The mean shell lengths of larvae were signifi cantly decreased in the high and extremely high pCO_2 groups compared with the ambient control groups. Furthermore, under high and extremely high pCO_2 conditions, the cultures exhibited signifi cantly increased abundances of abnormal larvae and increased severity of abnormalities compared with the ambient control. In the umbonate veliger stage of the experimental larvae, the most common abnormalities were shell deformations, distortions, and fi ssures; on the other hand, convex hinges and mantle protuberances were absent. These results suggest that elevated CO_2 exerts an additional burden on the health of M. veneriformis larvae by impairing early development.

Polymeric micelle nanocarriers in cancer research

Amphiphilic block copolymers （ABCs） assem- ble into a spherical nanoscopic supramolecular core/shell nanostructure termed a polymeric micelle that has been widely researched as an injectable nanocarrier for poorly water-soluble anticancer agents. The aim of this review article is to update progress in the field of drug delivery towards clinical trials, highlighting advances in polymeric micelles used for drug solubilization, reduced off-target toxicity and tumor targeting by the enhanced permeability and retention （EPR） effect. Polymeric micelles vary in stability in blood and drug release rate, and accordingly play different but key roles in drug delivery. For intravenous （IV） infusion, polymeric micelles that disas- semble in blood and rapidly release poorly water-soluble anticancer agent such as paclitaxel have been used for drug solubilization, safety and the distinct possibility of toxicity reduction relative to existing solubilizing agents, e.g., Cremophor EL. Stable polymeric micelles are long- circulating in blood and reduce distribution to non-target tissue, lowering off-target toxicity. Further, they participate in the EPR effect in murine tumor models. In summary, polymeric micelles act as injectable nanocarriers for poorly water-soluble anticancer agents, achieving reduced toxi- city and targeting tumors by the EPR effect.

Automatically segmenting crops and weeds in the image input from cameras accurately is essential in various agricultural technology fields,such as herbicide spraying by farming robots based on crop and weed segmentation ***,crop and weed images taken with a camera have motion blur due to various causes(e.g.,vibration or shaking of a camera on farming robots,shaking of crops and weeds),which reduces the accuracy of crop and weed ***,robust crop and weed segmentation for motion-blurred images is ***,previous crop and weed segmentation studies were performed without considering motion-blurred *** solve this problem,this study proposed a new motion-blur image restoration method based on a wide receptive field attention network(WRA-Net),based on which we investigated improving crop and weed segmentation accuracy in motion-blurred ***-Net comprises a main block called a lite wide receptive field attention residual block,which comprises modified depthwise separable convolutional blocks,an attention gate,and a learnable skip *** conducted experiments using the proposed method with 3 open databases:BoniRob,crop/weed field image,and rice seedling and weed *** to the results,the crop and weed segmentation accuracy based on mean intersection over union was 0.7444,0.7741,and 0.7149,respectively,demonstrating that this method outperformed the state-of-the-art methods.

A facile one-step approach to hierarchically assembled core-shell-like MnO2@MnO2 nanoarchitectures on carbon fibers： An efficient and flexible electrode material to enhance energy storage

Hierarchical core-shell-like MnO2 nanostructures （NSs） were used to anchor MnO2 hexagonal nanoplate arrays （HNPAs） on carbon cloth （CC） fibers. The NSs were prepared by a novel one-step electrochemical deposition method. Under an external cathodic voltage of -2.0 V for 30 min, hierarchical core-shell-like MnO2-NS-decorated MnO2 HNPAs （MnO2 NSs@MnO2 HNPAs） were uniformly grown on CC with reliable adhesion. The phase purity and morphological properties of the samples were characterized by various physicochemical techniques. At a constant external cathodic voltage, growth of MnO2 NSs@MnO2 HNPAs on CC was carried for different time periods. When utilized as a flexible, robust, and binder-free electrode for pseudocapacitors, the hierarchical core-shell-like MnO2 NSs@MnO2 HNPAs on CC showed clearly enhanced electrochemical properties in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte solution. The results indicate that the MnO2 NSs@MnO2 HNPAs on CC have a maximum specific capacitance of 244.54 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g with excellent cycling stability compared to that of bare MnO2 HNPAs on CC （112.1 F/g at 0.5 A/g current density）. We believe that the superior charge storage performance of the pseudocapacitive electrode can be mainly attributed to the hierarchical MnO2 NSs@MnO2 HNPAs building blocks that have a large specific surface area, offering additional electroactive sites for efficient electrochemical reactions. The facile and single-step approach to growth of hierarchical pseudocapacitive materials on textile based electrodes opens up the possibility for the fabrication of high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Volumetric fluid analysis of fixed monthly anti-VEGF treatment in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration

·AIM:To evaluate visual outcomes and changes in fluid after administering monthly anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)injections to treat neovascular agerelated macular degeneration(n AMD)with subretinal fluid(SRF)and pigment epithelial detachment(PED).·METHODS:This prospective study included eyes with n AMD previously treated with as-needed anti-VEGF *** patients were treated with six monthly intravitreal injections of *** volumetric segmentation analyses of the SRF and PED were *** main outcome measures included best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),and SRF and PED volumes.·RESULTS:Twenty eyes of 20 patients were included in this *** the 6-month follow-up,BCVA and PED volume did not change significantly(P=0.110 and 0.999,respectively)but the mean SRF volume decreased from 0.53±0.82 mm3 at baseline to 0.08±0.23 mm3(P=0.002).The absorption rate of the SRF volume was negatively correlated with the duration of previous antiVEGF treatment(P=0.029).Seven of the 20 eyes(35%)showed a fluid-free macula and significant improvement in BCVA(P=0.036)by month 6.·CONCLUSION:Quantifying the SRF can precisely determine the patient’s responsiveness to anti-VEGF treatment of n AMD.

BACKGROUNDAutonomic dysreflexia (AD) can be a life-threatening condition in patients withspinal cord injury. It is important to prevent bladder overdistension in thesepatients as it may trigger AD. Sensation-dependent bladder emptying (SDBE), asa method of bladder management, improves the quality of life and allowsphysiologic voiding. In this study, we report disruption of the SDBE habit afterbladder overdistension leading to AD with chest *** SUMMARYA 47-year-old male with a diagnosis of C4 American Spinal Cord InjuryAssociation impairment scale A had been emptying his bladder using the cleanintermittent catheterization method with an itchy sensation in the nose as asensory indication for a full bladder for 23 years, and the usual urine volume wasabout 300-400 mL. At the time of this study, the patient had delayed catheterizationfor approximately five hours. He developed severe abdominal pain andheadache and had to visit the emergency room for bladder overdistension (800mL) and a high systolic blood pressure (205 mmHg). After control of AD, ahypersensitive bladder was observed despite using anticholinergic agents. Thesensation indicating bladder fullness changed from nose itching to pain in theabdomen and precordial area. Moreover, the volume of the painful bladder fillingsensation became highly variable and was noted when the bladder urine volumeexceeded only 100 mL. The patient refused intermittent clean catheterization Finally, a cystostomy was performed, which relieved the *** using physiologic feedback, such as SDBE, for bladder management arerecommended to avoid bladder overdistension.

The Coupled Model Predictability of the Western North Pacific Summer Monsoon with Different Leading Times

Leading time length is an important issue for modeling seasonal forecasts. In this study, a comparison of the interannual predictability of the Western North Pacific (WNP) summer monsoon between different leading months was performed by using one-, four-, and sevenmonth lead retrospective forecasts (hindcasts) of four coupled models from Ensembles-Based Predictions of Climate Changes and Their Impacts (ENSEMBLES) for the period of 1960 2005. It is found that the WNP summer anomalies, including lower-tropospheric circulation and precipitation anomalies, can be well predicted for all these leading months. The accuracy of the four-month lead prediction is only slightly weaker than that of the one-month lead prediction, although the skill decreases with the increase of leading months.
