＜正＞ The study examines the healing effect on gastric and oral ulcers of tannic extract obtained from Pinus caribaeae Morelet and preclinical toxicology tests. The protective effect on gastric mucous was evaluated in lesions induced by ethanol in Wistar rats at dose of 5 mg/kg. Oral mucous healing effect was evaluated in lesions induced by acetic acid in Golden syrian hamster at 3 dose levels:64,80 and 100 mg/ml. Oral acute toxicity was conduced at dose of 2000 mg/kg and subchronic doses of 1,2.5 and 5 mg/kg/day were used for 90 days exposure in Wistar rats. Tannic extract causes significant decrease of gastric lesions. Ulcers number and lesions index decreased in 47 and 35 % respectively. Oral mucous dosing causes significant acceleration of scaring. Epithelial regeneration and own sheet maturation were accelerate in treated group. There were no mortality and signs of toxicity in acute toxicity assay. In subchronic exposure signs of toxicity were observed and body weight gain was significantly increased. some of the blood and biochemical elements were affected. The histopathological examination showed abnormalities in liver, kidney, stomach and nasal cavity organs at doses of 1.0 and 5.0 mg/kg/day.

Knowledge of Factors Associated with Teenage Pregnancy among Junior High school students in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region of Ghana

World Health Organization (WHO) defines teenage pregnancy as occurring between the ages of 10 and 19. Although teenagers make up just 22% of the Ghanaian population, in 2014, a Demographic and Health survey report indicated that teenagers account for 30% of all births recorded. Pregnancies and births during the teenage period are associated with higher risks than older women. This study aimed to identify and establish the knowledge of factors linked to teenage pregnancies among junior high school students in the Talensi District Assembly in the Upper East of Ghana. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 95 Junior High school students from January to February, 2022 for a period of six weeks. Convenience sampling was used to select the participants. Primary data was obtained using a structured questionnaire;secondary data was obtained from the Talensi District Health Directorate and the Talensi District Assembly. Data were analysed using sPss Version 22. Results. Thirty-six (36, 25.2%) of the respondents intimated that curiosity was a significant cause of teenage pregnancies in the Talensi District, which recorded 19.6% in 2021, an increase over the 2020 figure of 17.7%. Reasons why teenagers would want to engage in sexual activities, included curiosity about sex—36 (27.17%), social media influences—8 (19.58), peer pressure—27 (18.88%) and favours to partners—19 (13.29%). Concerning their knowledge about contraceptive use, the participants mentioned friends (32.26%) as being the prime informants, parents and relatives (17.74%) and radio broadcasts (12.10%). Conclusion: The Talensi District Assembly is entreated to roll out poverty alleviation programmes for families in the area with teenage girls attending school and to enact legislation prohibiting early marriage. Measures that will help reduce teenage pregnancies in the district should include adequate financial support by parents of their wards, sex education in schools and various houses, and schooling

The Role of Human Herpesvirus 8 Molecular Characterization in the Management of HIV Infected Patients Diagnosed with Malignancies Associated with Its Infection

Despite the progress has been reached with Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) research, there are gaps in the knowledge of viral induced oncogenesis. The aim of the present study was to identify possible associations between HHV-8 subtypes, HHV-8 loads and clinical manifestations of HIV infected patients diagnosed with different malignancies associated with HHV-8 infection. Forty six HIV-1 infected individuals diagnosed with different HHV-8 associated diseases were studied [37 epidemic Kaposi’s sarcoma (Ks), 3 pleural effusion lymphoma (PEL);5 peripheral lymphadenopathies (PL);1 Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL);1 non Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL)]. HHV-8 loads were determined by quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) whilst HHV-8 subtypes were determined by open-reading frame (ORF)-K1 gen genotyping. HHV-8 subtypes B, A, C, A5 and E were exhibited by 31.8%, 23.4%, 19.1%, 17% and 8.5% of the studied patients, respectively. The median HHV-8 viral load did not differ between subtypes (p > 0.05) but HHV-8 viral loads were significantly higher in PEL than in epidemic Ks lesion or lymph nodes (p = 0.04). subtype B was detected in 60% of patients with B cell lymphoma (NHL, PEL and HL) whereas subtype E was only detected in patients with epidemic Ks diagnosis. Our data suggest that HHV-8 DNA quantification instead of subtype identification could be used as a surrogate marker for monitoring its infection, not only in epidemic Ks patients but also in HIV infected individuals with lymphoproliferative disorders.

Recombinant streptokinase vs hydrocortisone suppositories in acute hemorrhoids:A randomized controlled trial

AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of recombinant streptokinase(rsK) vs hydrocortisone acetate-based suppositories in acute hemorrhoidal ***: A multicenter(11 sites), randomized(1:1:1), open, controlled trial with parallel groups was performed. All participating patients gave their written,informed consent. After inclusion, patients with acute symptoms of hemorrhoids were centrally randomized to receive, as outpatients, by the rectal route, suppositories of rsK 200000 IU of one unit every 8 h(first 3 units)and afterwards every 12 h until 8 administrations were completed(schedule A), one unit every 8 h until 6 units were completed(schedule B), or 25 mg hydrocortisone acetate once every 8 h up to a maximum of 24 administrations. Evaluations were performed at 3, 5,and 10 d post-inclusion. The main end-point was the 5thday response(disappearance of pain and bleeding, and≥ 70% reduction of the lesion size). Time to response and need for thrombectomy were secondary efficacy variables. Adverse events were also ***: Groups were homogeneous with regards to demographic and baseline characteristics. Fifth day complete response rates were 156/170(91.8%; 95%CI:87.3-96.2), 155/170(91.2%; 95%CI: 86.6%-95.7%),and 46/170(27.1%; 95%CI: 20.1%-34.0%) with rsK(schedule A and B) and hydrocortisone acetate suppositories, respectively.
