Coupled conditional nonlinear optimal perturbations and their application to ENSO ensemble forecasts

Limitations are existed in current ensemble forecasting initial perturbation methods for describing the interactions among various spheres of the Earth system. In this study, a new method is proposed, namely, the coupled conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation(C-CNOP) method, which incorporates multisphere interactions much appropriately. The El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) is a typical ocean-atmosphere “coupling”(or “interaction”) phenomenon. The C-CNOP method is applied to ensemble forecasting of ENSO. It is demonstrated that the C-CNOP method can generate coupled initial perturbations(CPs) that appropriately consider initial ocean-atmosphere coupling uncertainty for ENSO ensemble forecasts. Results reveal that the CPs effectively improve the ability of ENSO ensemble-mean forecasts in both temporal variability of Nio3.4 sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTAs) and spatial variability of ENSO mature-phase SSTAs. Notably, despite the weakest ocean-atmosphere coupling strength in the tropical Pacific occurring during the boreal spring and summer, CPs still capture the uncertainties of this weak coupling when ENSO predictions are initialized at these seasons. This performance of CPs significantly suppresses the rapid increase of ENSO prediction errors due to the high ocean-atmosphere coupling instability during these seasons, and thus effectively extends the lead time of skillful ENSO forecasting. Hence, the C-CNOP method is a suitable initial perturbation approach for ENSO ensemble forecast that can describe initial ocean-atmosphere coupling uncertainty. It is expected that the CCNOP method plays a significant role in predictions of other high-impact climate phenomena, and even future Earth system predictions.

Self-Triggered Set Stabilization of Boolean Control Networks and Its Applications

Set stabilization is one of the essential problems in engineering systems, and self-triggered control(STC) can save the storage space for interactive information, and can be successfully applied in networked control systems with limited communication resources. In this study, the set stabilization problem and STC design of Boolean control networks are investigated via the semi-tensor product technique. On the one hand, the largest control invariant subset is calculated in terms of the strongly connected components of the state transition graph, by which a graph-theoretical condition for set stabilization is derived. On the other hand, a characteristic function is exploited to determine the triggering mechanism and feasible controls. Based on this, the minimum-time and minimum-triggering open-loop, state-feedback and output-feedback STCs for set stabilization are designed,respectively. As classic applications of self-triggered set stabilization, self-triggered synchronization, self-triggered output tracking and self-triggered output regulation are discussed as well. Additionally, several practical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of theoretical results.

Background:The discovery of regulatory cell death has led to a breakthrough in the therapeutic field.Various forms of cell death,such as necrosis,apoptosis,pyroptosis,autophagy,and ferroptosis,play an important role in the development of liver diseases.In general,more than one form of cell death pathways is responsible for the disease state.Therefore,it is particularly important to study the regulation and interaction of various cell death forms in liver diseases.Data sources:We performed a PubMed search up to November 2022 with the following keywords:ferritinophagy,ferroptosis,and liver disease.We also used terms such as signal path,inducer,and inhibitor to supplement the query results.Results:This review summarized the basic characteristics of ferritinophagy and ferroptosis and the regulation of ferroptosis by ferritinophagy and reviewed the key targets and treatment strategies of ferroptosis in different liver diseases.Conclusions:Ferritinophagy is a potential therapeutic target in ferroptosis-related liver diseases.

π-conjugated chromophore functionalized high-nuclearity titanium-oxo clusters containing structural unit of anatase for photocatalytic selective oxidation of sulfides

N-doping has significant influence in manipulating the properties of TiO2,and this has stimulated the development of N-donor-functionalized titanium-oxo clusters（TOCs） as molecular models to study the structure-property relationship.However,the structural type and photoresponsive application are still limited for such TOCs,especially regarding the high-nuclearity TOCs that contain structure unit of TiO2for photocatalysis.Herein,we showed the synthesis of a series of high-nuclearity TOCs 1-3 compounds using π-conjugated 1,10-phenanthroline（phen） as chromophore and N-donor functional ligand.Compound 1 features cocrystal structure composed of one [Ti26]2+and half [Ti22]2+,which renders it as the first cocrystallized TOC containing two positively charged species and phen-functionalized TOC showing the highest nuclearity up to 37 Ti centers.By adjusting the synthetic conditions,the individual {Ti22} and {Ti26} clusters can also be isolated as Compounds 2 and 3,respectively.The core structure of {Ti22} is mainly constructed from four lacunary {Ti4} derived from pentagonal {Ti（Ti）5} unit,while {Ti26} is built from four complete {Ti（Ti）5} unit.Notably,a {Ti8O14} structure unit of anatase TiO2can be identified in {Ti26}.Based on the unique structural features and proper photophysical and photochemical properties of Compounds 1-3,they are applied for photocatalytic sulfoxidation.Owing to the presence of anatase structure unit in {Ti26} and the synergistic effect from {Ti22} and {Ti26},the catalytic performance presents in the order of Compound 1> Compound 3> Compound 2.This work provides excellent models to understand the structureproperty relationship from the perspective of cocrystallization and Ti-O binding model and will further promote the application of TOCs as functional catalysts for organic transformation.

Dynamics of a Reaction-diffusion-ODE System in a Heterogeneous Media

The existence and stability of stationary solutions for a reaction-diffusion-ODE system are investigated in this paper.We first show that there exist both continuous and discontinuous stationary solutions.Then a good understanding of the stability of discontinuous stationary solutions is gained under an appropriate condition.In addition,we demonstrate the influences of the diffusion coefficient on stationary solutions.The results we obtained are based on the super-/sub-solution method and the generalized mountain pass theorem.Finally,some numerical simulations are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Counteracting effects on ENSO induced by ocean chlorophyll interannual variability and tropical instability wave-scale perturbations in the tropical Pacific

Large perturbations in chlorophyll(Chl)are observed to coexist at interannual and tropical instability wave(TIW)scales in the tropical Pacific;at present,their combined effects on El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)through ocean biologyinduced heating(OBH)feedbacks are not understood well.Here,a hybrid coupled model(HCM)for the atmosphere and ocean physics-biogeochemistry(AOPB)in the tropical Pacific is adopted to quantify how ENSO can be modulated by Chl perturbations at interannual and TIW scales,individually or collectively,respectively.The HCM-based sensitivity experiments demonstrate a counteracting effect on ENSO:the bio-climate feedback due to large-scale Chl interannual variability acts to damp ENSO through its impact on upper-ocean stratification and vertical mixing,whereas that due to TIW-scale Chl perturbations tends to amplify ENSO.Because ENSO simulations are sensitively dependent on the ways Chl effects are represented at these different scales,it is necessary to adequately take into account these related differential Chl effects in climate modeling.A bias source for ENSO simulations is illustrated that is related with the Chl effects in the tropical Pacific,adding in a new insight into interactions between the climate system and ocean ecosystem on different scales in the region.These results reveal a level of complexity of ENSO modulations resulting from Chl effects at interannual and TIW scales,which are associated with ocean biogeochemical processes and their interactions with physical processes in the tropical Pacific.

Construction of Naphthalenediimide Lanthanide(Ⅲ)-MOFs and Composites Incorporated Electron-Rich Pyrene Derivative as Multifunctional Fluorescence Sensing for Nitro Aromatic Compounds and Aldehydes

The development of host-guest MOF luminescent composites has attracted considerable attention. However,it is still a challenge to reasonably design large scale conjugated polycarboxylic acids metal-organic framework (MOF) and modulate donor-acceptor interaction. Herein,a series of isostructural 3D porous lanthanide MOF [Ln_(2)(BINDI)0.5(NO_(3))(DMA)(H_(2)O)]∙DMA∙2.5H_(2)O (Ln = La (1),Ce (2),Pr (3) and Nd (4);H_(4)BINDI (N,N’-bis(5-isophthalic acid)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide) were synthesized. Considering the electron-deficient performances of Ln-BINDI MOFs,D-A type composites Ln-MOFs (1—4@H_(4)TBAPy) were prepared via the incorporation of electron-rich H_(4)TBAPy (1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid) pyrene),which more improved the luminescence performance of complexes 1—4 and can be used as fluorescence sensors for the detection of nitro compounds and aldehydes. High sensitivity of 1@H_(4)TBAPy towards pNBA,pNA PNP,DNP,and TNP could be achieved through hydrogen bond interactions between MOF and analytes,as well as the π-π interaction between H_(4)TBAPy and the naphthalene ring of BINDI,thus the fluorescence quenching efficiency of 1@H_(4)TBAPy was better than that of the complex 1. In addition,it is found that 1@H_(4)TBAPy has high selectivity and sensitivity to aromatic aldehyde SA,5-Mesal and HMBA. Such strategy to enhance the emission of NDI based Ln-BINDI MOFs,will open up an avenue to obtain more fluorescent MOFs for sensing.

The safety aspect of sodium ion batteries for practical applications

Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs) with advantages of abundant resource and low cost have emerged as promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage systems. However, safety issues existing in electrolytes, anodes, and cathodes bring about frequent accidents regarding battery fires and explosions and impede the development of high-performance SIBs. Therefore, safety analysis and high-safety battery design have become prerequisites for the development of advanced energy storage systems. The reported reviews that only focus on a specific issue are difficult to provide overall guidance for building high-safety SIBs. To overcome the limitation, this review summarizes the recent research progress from the perspective of key components of SIBs for the first time and evaluates the characteristics of various improvement strategies. By orderly analyzing the root causes of safety problems associated with different components in SIBs(including electrolytes, anodes, and cathodes), corresponding improvement strategies for each component were discussed systematically. In addition, some noteworthy points and perspectives including the chain reaction between security issues and the selection of improvement strategies tailored to different needs have also been proposed. In brief, this review is designed to deepen our understanding of the SIBs safety issues and provide guidance and assistance for designing high-safety SIBs.

Association between abnormal default mode network homogeneity and sleep disturbances in major depressive disorder

Background Sleep disturbance is a common comorbidity of major depressive disorder(MDD).However,network homogeneity(NH)changes of the default mode network(DMN)in MDD with sleep disturbances are unclear.Aims The purpose of this study was to probe the abnormal NH in the DMN in MDD with sleep disturbances and to reveal the differences between MDD with or without sleep disturbances.Methods Twenty-four patients with MDD and sleep disturbances(Pa_s),33 patients with MDD without sleep disturbances(Pa_ns)and 32 healthy controls(HCs)were recruited in this study.Resting-state functional imaging data were analysed using NH.Results Compared with Pa_ns and HCs,Pa_s showed decreased NH in the left superior medial prefrontal cortex and increased NH in the right precuneus.There was a negative correlation between NH in the left superior medial prefrontal cortex and sleep disturbances(r=−0.42,p=0.001)as well as a positive correlation between NH in the right precuneus and sleep disturbances(r=0.41,p=0.002)in patients with MDD.Conclusions MDD with sleep disturbances is associated with abnormal NH in the DMN,which could differentiate pa_s from pa_ns.The DMN may play a crucial role in the neurobiological mechanisms of MDD with sleep disturbances.

BACKGRouND The pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 subunitβ(PDHB)gene which regulates energy metabolism is located in mitochondria.However,few studies have elucidated the role and mechanism of PDHB in different cancers.AIM To comprehensive pan-cancer analysis of PDHB was performed based on bioinformatics approaches to explore its tumor diagnostic and prognostic value and tumor immune relevance in cancer.In vitro experiments were performed to examine the biological regulation of PDHB in liver cancer.METHODS Pan-cancer data related to PDHB were obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)database.Analysis of the gene expression profiles of PDHB was based on TCGA and Genotype Tissue Expression Dataset databases.Cox regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier methods were used to assess the correlation between PDHB expression and survival prognosis in cancer patients.The correlation between PDHB and receiver operating characteristic diagnostic curve,clinicopathological staging,somatic mutation,tumor mutation burden(TMB),microsatellite instability(MSI),DNA methylation,and drug susceptibility in pan-cancer was also analyzed.Various algorithms were used to analyze the correlation between PDHB and immune cell infiltration and tumor chemotaxis environment,as well as the co-expression analysis of PDHB and immune checkpoint(ICP)genes.The expression and functional phenotype of PDHB in single tumor cells were studied by single-cell sequencing,and the functional enrichment analysis of PDHB-related genes was performed.The study also validated the level of mRNA or protein expression of PDHB in several cancers.Finally,in vitro experiments verified the regulatory effect of PDHB on the proliferation,migration,and invasion of liver cancer.RESULTS PDHB was significantly and differently expressed in most cancers.PDHB was significantly associated with prognosis in patients with a wide range of cancers,including kidney renal clear cell carcinoma,kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma,breast invasive carcinoma,and brain lower grade glioma.In some cancers,P
