AIM:To investigate relationship between refractive errors and eleven single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)in HGF,GC,MFN1,GNB4,and VDR genes in Turkish ***:A group of 212 participants with myopia(n=91),hyperopia(n=45),and emmetropia(n=76)were investigated in this *** in HGF,GC,MFN1,GNB4 and VDR genes were studied by Snap Shot ***:The patients in this study consists of 47 female/44 male(age:23.47±4.30)patients with myopia,20 female/25 male(age:31.20±8.02)with hyperopia and 33 female/43 male(age:25.22±6.60)with *** genotype distribution of the rs7618348 polymorphism,which was the only statistically significant one between myopia and emmetropia *** genotype distribution of the rs3819545,rs3735520,rs7041,and rs2239182 polymorphisms,which were statistically significant between hyperopia and emmetropia ***:The importance of genetic predisposition to refractive errors with respect to etiology of the disease is *** is known that polymorphism studies may differ because of genetic diversity among populations so larger cohort studies are required in different populations to enlighten the etiology of the refractive errors.

Single-step conversion of lignin monomers to phenol: Bridging the gap between lignin and high-value chemicals

Transformation of lignin into high-value chemicals is hampered by the complexity of monomers obtained from lignin depolymerization. Here we report a strategy, composed of hy-dro-demethoxylation and de-alkylation reactions, that is able to chemically converge various lig-nin-derived phenolic monomers into phenol in a single-step. Using 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol as a model compound, Pt/C exhibited the best performance in hydro-demethoxylation reaction afford-ing 80% 4-propylphenol from 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol, while H-ZSM-5 was identified as the most suitable catalyst for de-alkylation, achieving 83% yield of phenol from 4-propylphenol. Since the two catalysts operate under compatible conditions, combining the two catalysts to simultane-ously promote both hydro-demethoxylation and de-alkylation reactions was achieved. Configura-tion of how to organize the catalysts is a critical parameter, where the physical mixture of the two was most effective, providing over 60% phenol from 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol in a single-step.

Turbulent non-premixed combustion of gaseous fuels is of importance for many technical applications, especially for the steel and refractory industry. Accurate turbulent flow and temperature fields are of major importance in order to predict details on the concentration fields. The performances of the GRI-Mech 3.0 and the Jones and Lindstedt mechanisms are compared. Detailed chemistry is included with the GRI-Mech 3.0 and J-L kinetic mechanisms in combination with the laminar flamelet combustion model. The combustion system selected for this comparison is a confined non-premixed methane flame surrounded by co-flowing air The simulation results are compared with experimental data of Lewis and Smoot （2001）.

Imaging the Atherosclerosis with 64-Detector Row Computed Tomography in Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Objective: The higher risk and fatality of cardiovascular disease in subjects with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia warrants early screening. Computed tomography angiography is the most promising method at present as a reliable and reproducible noninvasive diagnostic test of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to describe the 64-slice multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography findings of new cases with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Methods: Four patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (2 female and 2 male) with mean age of 23 ± 9 years were included. Mean plasma total and LDL cholesterol were 654 ± 75 mg/dl and 609 ± 76 mg/dl. Tomography examinations were performed using a 64-row MDCT-CA system (Brilliance Computed Tomography scanner, Philips Healthcare). Results: All patients presented calcified and mixed atherosclerotic plaques in the ascending aorta near the origin of the coronary arteries. More extensive atherosclerosis was found in Case 1 and Case 2 than in other cases. Case 3 has mild atherosclerosis and Case 4 had normal coronaries but plaques in aorta. In addition, we detected myocardial bridging in left anterior descending artery of 2 cases, calcified plaques in postero-lateral branch artery, and calcification in non-coronary sinus in others. Conclusion: Multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography is a useful, non-invasive tool for detecting early aortic and coronary atherosclerosis in homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia subjects and may be the choice of imaging for most of such subjects.

Ovarian torsion is one of the gynecological emergencies that affect ovarian tissue integrity and fertility. In this study, we aim to investigate the effects of Momordica charantia (MC) on ovarian tissue injury induced by ovarian ischemia-reperfusion. Twenty-four rats were assigned to three groups: control group, ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) group and IR + MC group. 600 mg/kg MC extract were given rats via orogastric route. 3-hour ischemia and 3-hour reperfusion were performed for IR protocol. At the end of experiment, ovarian tissues were excised, fixed in zinc-formalin and processed for routine paraffin wax tissue embedding. Sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Ovarian sections of control group showed regular histological appearance. In ovarian sections of I/R group, hemorrhage, fibrin accumulation, mononuclear cell infiltration and degenerated follicles were observed. I/R + MC group showed improved histopathology caused by I/R injury. We think that MC extract may protect ovarian tissue integrity and its histological structures.

The Prevalence of Celiac Disease in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

AIM: To determine the prevalence of celiac disease related autoantibodies in patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and to compare these results with the general population. METHODS: In total, 137 consecutive patients with type 1 DM, 172 with type 2 DM and 113 age-sex matched control subjects were included into the study. Antigliadin-autoantibodies (AGA) IgG and IgA, and endomysial-antibodies(EMA) IgG and IgA antibodies were determined. Patients who were positive for one or more were offered a gastroduodenoscopic examination. RESULTS: AGA IgG positivity was detected in 38.7% (53/137) patients with type 1 DM in 26.2% (45/172) patients with type 2 DM and in 16.8% (19/113) control subjects (significant differences). AGA IgA positivity was detected in 24.8% (34/137) patients with type 1 DM, in 9.3% (16/172) patients with type 2 DM and in 3.5% (4/113) control subjects (significant differences). EMA IgG positivity was detected in 10.2% (14/137) patients with type 1 DM in 0.6% (1/176) patients with type 2 DM and 0.9% (1/113) control subjects (significant differences). EMA IgA positivity was detected in 11.7% (16/137) patients with type 1 DM in 0.6% (1/172) patients with type 2 DM and in none of control subjects. EMA IgA positivity was sig- nificantly higher in patients with type 1 DM as compared with patients with type 2 DM and controls. CONCLUSION: High prevalence of celiac disease at the diagnosis of type 1 DM is observed. Serological markers are useful for identifying celiac disease patients with type 1 DM.
