The Potential Application of <i>Syzygium aromaticum</i>and <i>Cymbopogon citratus</i>Essential Oils as Natural Preservatives of Beef Patties

The effect of essential oils from Syzygium aromaticum and Cymbopogon citratus on the lipid oxidation and microbial growth in beef patties was investigated in the present study. Essential oils were incorporated into the beef patties at 0.1% and 0.2% (w/w). The beef patties were then inoculated with cultures of E. coli and S. aureus and stored at 4°C. The control patties were processed without essential oil but inoculated with E. coli or S. aureus. The proximate composition, lipid oxidation and microbial counts were carried out after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Results showed that the incorporation of essential oils in beef patties did not significantly (P S. aromaticum at 0.2% reduced the E. coli growth by 1.48 log CFU/g and that of S. aureus by 6.52 log CFU/g while the incorporation of C. citratus at 0.2% reduced the E. coli growth by 1.21 log CFU/g and that of S. aureus by 1.4 log CFU/g after 28 days of storage. The pH measurement during the storage period showed a slight drop during the first 7 days of storage and an increase during the last 21 days in all samples. The sensory test of the beef patties showed that the consumers accepted patties formulated with the two essential oils. But the one made with 0.1% essential oil of S. aromaticum was the most accepted. The analysis of the color of beef patties between 0 and 28 days of storage revealed that the incorporation of essential oils retarded the degradation of the color of patties. Results obtained in the present study indicate the possibility of exploiting Syzygium aromaticum and Cymbopogon citratus essential oils to protect beef patties against lipid oxidation and microbial growth.

The major concern of this work is to propose new prototypes of surface hybrid waves, in particular waves propagating without sprawl or deformation on the surface of a fluid. The model considered for this purpose is the modified KdV (Korteweg-de Vries) equation. A peculiarity of the obtained solutions is that they form packages constituted by combinations of waves belonging to the two main families of well-known bright and dark solitary waves. This putting together creates competitions between the different components of the considered packages which, following the values assigned to the parameters of the considered system and in relation to those of the wave parameters, generate hybrid or multi-form structures. The direct method of resolution which made possible the obtained results is that of Bogning-Djeumen Tchaho-Kofane extended to the new implicit Bogning functions. The existence conditions of some solutions are obtained. The numerical simulations carried out with a view to testing the observable and applicable characters of the obtained solutions revealed their stabilities over a relatively long time, and at the same time, confirmed the recommended theoretical forecasts. We are convinced that the solutions proposed as part of this work will make it possible to detect, understand and explain some physical phenomena linked to fluid molecular interactions, former or new, which constantly occur on the fluid surfaces, mainly at the shallow water surface.

The objective of this work is to numerically determine the thermal performance of the parabolic cylinder cooker commonly “blazing tube”. These performances were determined by establishing heat balances at the different levels of the system. The equations obtained have been discretized;simplifying assumptions have been made to facilitate their resolution. We adopted Gauss Seidel’s method using MATLAB software to solve these equations. The temperatures of the coolant, the glass and the absorber were determined as a function of time and along the tube. The thermal efficiency was also determined. It emerged that the different temperatures evolve linearly as a function of the length of the tube. Yield and temperatures depend on the amount of sunshine.

Understanding the immune responses elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection is critical in terms of protection against reinfection and,thus,for public health policy and vaccine development for *** this study,using either live SARS-CoV-2 particles or retroviruses pseudotyped with the SARS-CoV-2 S viral surface protein(Spike),we studied the neutralizing antibody(nAb)response in serum samples from a cohort of 140 SARS-CoV-2 qPCR-confirmed infections,including patients with mild symptoms and also more severe forms,including those that required intensive *** show that nAb titers correlated strongly with disease severity and with anti-spike IgG ***,patients from intensive care units exhibited high nAb titers;conversely,patients with milder disease symptoms had heterogeneous nAb titers,and asymptomatic or exclusive outpatient-care patients had no or low *** found that nAb activity in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients displayed a relatively rapid decline after recovery compared to individuals infected with other ***,we found an absence of cross-neutralization between endemic coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2,indicating that previous infection by human coronaviruses may not generate protective nAbs against ***,we found that the D614G mutation in the spike protein,which has recently been identified as the current major variant in Europe,does not allow neutralization ***,our results contribute to our understanding of the immune correlates of SARS-CoV-2-induced disease,and rapid evaluation of the role of the humoral response in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 is warranted.

Carbon is continuously being removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis and stored in carbon pools(live,dead,and soil carbon)of forest ***,carbon stock in dead wood and of trees with diameters at breast height(dbh)between 5 and 10 cm is often not considered in many studies carried out in the Congo Basin *** relationship between tree diversity,life-forms and carbon stocks has received little *** study was carried out on the outskirts of Deng Deng National Park(DDNP)to determine tree diversity(dominant families,species richness and Shannon index),assess carbon stocks in the five carbon compartments(living tree,understory,fine roots,dead wood and litter)as well as to analyze the relationship between(1)carbon stocks and tree diversity;and,(2)between carbon stock and *** Shannon index of trees≥10 cm dbh ranged from 2.6 in riparian forest to 4.3 in secondary forest;and for the tree between 5 and 10 cm,it ranged to 1.56 in riparian forest to 3.68 in the secondary *** study site housed 16 species,7 genera and 3 families which are only found in trees of dbh between 5 and 10 *** average total carbon stock of the five compartments varied from 200.1 t ha-1 in forest residues to 439.1 t ha-1 in secondary *** wood carbon stock varied from 1.2 t ha-1 in riparian forests to 12.51t ha-1 in *** above ground carbon stocks for trees with diameter between 5 and 10 cm varied from 0.7 t ha-1 in young fallow fields to 5.02 t ha-1 in old secondary *** study reveals a low but positive correlation between species richness and total carbon stocks,as well as a significant positive relationship between life-forms and total carbon *** findings highlight the need for more data concerning carbon content of dead wood,carbon of trees≥5 cm<10 cm dbh and the relationship between carbon stocks and tree diversity from other areas of the Congo Basin for a good understanding of the contribution of tropical forests

Climatological Analysis of Aerosols Optical Properties by Airborne Sensors and in Situ Measurements in West Africa: Case of the Sahelian Zone

This paper deals with the climatology of aerosols in West Africa based on satellite and in situ measurements between 2001 and 2016 and covers four sites in the Sahelian zone. There are indeed Banizoumbou (13.541°N, 02.665°E), Cinzana (13.278°N, 05.934°W), Dakar (14.394°N, 16.959°W) and Ouagadougou (12.20°N, 1.40°W) located respectively in Niger, Mali, Senegal and Burkina Faso. Thus, an intercomparison between the satellite observations and the in situ measurements shows a good correlation between MODIS and AERONET with a correlation coefficient R = 0.86 at Cinzana, R = 0.85 at Banizounbou, R = 0.84 at Ouagadougou and a low correlation coefficient R = 0.66 calculated on the Dakar site. Like MODIS, SeaWiFS shows a very good correspondence with measurements of the ground photometer especially for Banizoumbou (R = 0.89), Cinzana (R = 0.88) and Dakar (R = 0.75) followed by a low correlation coefficient calculated on the Ouagadougou site (R = 0.64). The performance of these airborne sensors is also corroborated by the calculation of root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE). Following this validation, a climatological analysis based on aerosol optical depth (AOD) shows the seasonality of aerosols in West Africa strongly influenced by the climate dynamics illustrated by the MERRA model reanalysis. This seasonal spatial distribution of aerosols justifies the temporal variability of the particles observed at the different sites in the Sahel. In addition, a combined analysis of AOD and Angstrom coefficient indicates the aerosol period in the Sahel in spring (March-April-May) and summer (June-July-August). However, these aerosols are strongly dominated by desert dust whose main sources are located north in the Sahara and Sahel.

Associated with Knowledge, Attitude, Practice of Women of Childbearing Age towards Gynecological and Breast Cancer in Glazoue, Benin in 2021

Introduction: Gynaecological and breast cancers (GBC) are the most frequent and most serious cancers of women. They are frequent in Benin with an average of 108.5 cases per year. Objective: To identify factors associated with women’s knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding GBC. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive and analytical study. Women of childbearing age residing in the commune of Glazoué in Benin for at least six months were included. The WHO cluster sampling technique was used. The bruno De Finetti postulate and the Likert scale were used to study women’s knowledge, attitudes and practices. Data were collected and analysed using Epi Data 3.1 and Epi info 7.***.2.6 software. Results: A total of 540 women were registered. The mean age was 27.1 ± 8.84 years with extremes of 15 and 49 years. They were married (61.1%), had secondary education (40.2%) and lived in urban areas (61.9%). They had a low level of knowledge (75.4%), an adapted attitude (93.0%) and poor practice (88.9%). Occupation (p = 0.000), level of education (p = 0.007) and place of residence (p = 0.001) significantly influenced knowledge of GBC. The attitude was adequate (93%) and the practice was poor (88.9%). Inappropriate attitude was significantly associated with the level of education (p = 0.006). Conclusion: Women in the commune of Glazoué in Benin have a low level of knowledge of GBC with an adapted attitude and poor practice. Several factors are associated, hence the need to take them into account to facilitate GBC screening.
